  • Effects of liming on the flavor of kokuto-shochu, a spirit made from non-centrifugal sugar. [Journal Article]
    J Biosci Bioeng. 2020 Jun 16 [Online ahead of print]Iwasaki F, Sunao M, … Sameshima Y
  • Kokuto-shochu is a traditional Japanese spirit prepared from kokuto, a non-centrifugal brown cane sugar. When manufacturing kokuto, lime is added to the sugarcane juice to accelerate the crystallization of sucrose. Although the liming process differs depending on the manufacturer, the effects of liming on the quality of kokuto-shochu are unclear. Therefore, we investigated the flavor characterist…
  • Tetramethylpyrazine production from edible materials by the probiotic Bacillus coagulans. [Journal Article]
    Prep Biochem Biotechnol. 2020 Jun 13 [Online ahead of print]Zhong H, Shen J, … Xiao Z
  • 2,3,5,6-Tetramethylpyrazine (TMP) has health care functions, especially for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular health. In this study, we found that Bacillus coagulans, a well-known probiotic, has the capability to produce acetoin, a precursor of TMP. The culture conditions and medium for the production of TMP by B. coagulans CICC 20138 were optimized. Then, a novel three-step process was successf…
  • Intraoral Microbial Metabolism and Association with Host Taste Perception. [Journal Article]
J Dent Res. 2020 Jun; 99(6):739-745.Gardner A, So PW, Carpenter GH
  • Metabolomics has been identified as a means of functionally assessing the net biological activity of a particular microbial community. Considering the oral microbiome, such an approach remains largely underused. While the current knowledge of the oral microbiome is constantly expanding, there are several deficits in knowledge particularly relating to their interactions with their host. This work …
  • Engineering central pathways for industrial-level (3R)-acetoin biosynthesis in Corynebacterium glutamicum. [Journal Article]
    Microb Cell Fact. 2020 May 12; 19(1):102.Lu L, Mao Y, … Chen T
  • CONCLUSIONS: To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest titer of highly enantiomerically enriched (3R)-acetoin, together with a competitive product yield and productivity, achieved in a simple, green processes without expensive additives or substrates. This process therefore opens the possibility to achieve easy, efficient, economical and environmentally-friendly production of (3R)-acetoin via microbial fermentation in the near future.
  • Protecting tobacco plants from O3 injury by Bacillus velezensis with production of acetoin. [Journal Article]
    Physiol Plant. 2020 May 09 [Online ahead of print]Liu L, Zhao X, … Qi G
  • Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPRs) confer benefits to crops by producing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to trigger induced systemic tolerance (IST). Here, Bacillus velezensis GJ11, a kind of PGPRs, could produce VOCs such as 2,3-butanediol and acetoin to trigger IST and cause stomatal closure against O3 injury in tobacco plants. Compared to 2,3-butanediol, acetoin was more effective …
  • Light-powered Escherichia coli cell division for chemical production. [Journal Article]
    Nat Commun. 2020 May 08; 11(1):2262.Ding Q, Ma D, … Chen X
  • Cell division can perturb the metabolic performance of industrial microbes. The C period of cell division starts from the initiation to the termination of DNA replication, whereas the D period is the bacterial division process. Here, we first shorten the C and D periods of E. coli by controlling the expression of the ribonucleotide reductase NrdAB and division proteins FtsZA through blue light an…
  • Pseudomonas PS01 Isolated from Maize Rhizosphere Alters Root System Architecture and Promotes Plant Growth. [Journal Article]
Microorganisms. 2020 Mar 26; 8(4)Chu TN, Bui LV, Hoang MTT
  • The objectives of this study were to evaluate the plant growth promoting effects on Arabidopsis by Pseudomonas sp. strains associated with rhizosphere of crop plants grown in Mekong Delta, Vietnam. Out of all the screened isolates, Pseudomonas PS01 isolated from maize rhizosphere showed the most prominent plant growth promoting effects on Arabidopsis and maize (Zea mays). We also found that PS01 …
  • Adaptive Laboratory Evolution of Eubacterium limosum ATCC 8486 on Carbon Monoxide. [Journal Article]
    Front Microbiol. 2020; 11:402.Kang S, Song Y, … Cho BK
  • Acetogens are naturally capable of metabolizing carbon monoxide (CO), a component of synthesis gas (syngas), for autotrophic growth in order to produce biomass and metabolites such as acetyl-CoA via the Wood-Ljungdahl pathway. However, the autotrophic growth of acetogens is often inhibited by the presence of high CO concentrations because of CO toxicity, thus limiting their biosynthetic potential…
  • Characterization of the key odorants contributing to retronasal olfaction during bread consumption. [Journal Article]
    Food Chem. 2020 Jul 15; 318:126520.Pu D, Duan W, … Tang Y
  • Gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS) and dynamic quantitative descriptive analysis (D-QDA) were combined to explore the aroma release and perception from the retronasal cavity during bread consumption. D-QDA results elucidated that the sweet, creamy, and roasty notes were the most active attributes during oral processing. The final stage of oral processing had the most complicate…
  • Metabolic Engineering of Bacillus licheniformis for Production of Acetoin. [Journal Article]
    Front Bioeng Biotechnol. 2020; 8:125.Lü C, Ge Y, … Ma C
  • Acetoin is a potential platform compound for a variety of chemicals. Bacillus licheniformis MW3, a thermophilic and generally regarded as safe (GRAS) microorganism, can produce 2,3-butanediol with a high concentration, yield, and productivity. In this study, B. licheniformis MW3 was metabolic engineered for acetoin production. After deleting two 2,3-butanediol dehydrogenases encoding genes budC a…
