In this study, we systematically analyzed the microbial-driven effects of bamboo charcoal (BC) and bamboo vinegar (BV) on reducing NH3 and N2O emissions during aerobic composting. The results showed that BC and BV improved the nitrogen conversion and compost quality, but the combined BC + BV treatment obtained the best improvements. The BC, BV, and BC + BV treatments reduced the NH3 emissions by 14.35%, 17.90%, and 29.83%, respectively, and the N2O emissions by 44.83%, 55.96%, and 74.53%. BC and BV reduced the NH3 and N2O emissions during composting by controlling ammonia oxidation, where napA, nirK, and nosZ served as useful indicators of the N2O emissions from compost, especially the nirK gene. The dominant nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria belonged to Proteobacteria, and the changes in environmental factors during composting significantly affected the succession of the nitrifying and denitrifying bacterial communities. Nitrosomonas was a key nitrifying bacterial genus in the mesophilic composting period, and BC and BV may have reduced the NH3 emissions by enhancing its conversion to NH4+-N by Nitrosomonas. In addition, norank_p__environmental_samples, unclassified_k__norank_d__Bacteria, and unclassified_p__Proteobacteria were jointly responsible for driving the production of N2O during the compost maturity stage.

Hybrid structures known as timber-steel composites (TSCs) have been extensively studied due to their potential use as alternative construction materials that can satisfy demands related to sustainability. In addition to load capacity, fire resistance is a major consideration regarding the extensive use of TSCs. In this study, 12 specimens were tested using a glulam timber material covering cold-formed steel at the center. Specifically, the TSCs were fabricated from two timber blocks and an I-shaped steel core assembled using dowels or glue as a major structure. In order to use additional timber as a fire protection layer to protect a major structure by its charcoal produced after being burned, an additional timber with 5 cm in thickness was used to cover the major structure. The 1-h fire testing of TSC following the ISO 834-1 standard was applied, in order to achieve the potential application for a 4-story timber building. The results showed that temperatures at the steel flange increased by more than 300 °C for the final 5 min in 10 out of the 12 TSC specimens, indicating that the fire protection provided by the timber structure was not sufficient. The charcoal layer surpassing the extra timber was originally set and entered the steel structure of the TSC, which was expected to retain its physical qualities after a fire. Methods for evaluating the charring properties, based on the conventional method for wood and the standard specification set by Eurocode 5, were used to assess the structural degradation of TSCs. The conventional assessments showed a divergence from the actual performance of TSCs. Such variations demonstrated the limitations of models for conventional wood in assessing the structure of a TSC. A realistic assessment was conducted to expand knowledge related to this composite under destructive processes and provide fire reference values for the practical implementation of TSCs.

For the pretreatment of wood, charcoal and collagen from bone micro samples using the Acid-Base-Acid (ABA) method, we have assembled an automated computer-controlled unit in our laboratory CRL. The sample is placed in a glass single-necked cuvette. The machine consists of prepared solutions which are guided through capillaries, switching valve and peristaltic pump into the cuvette with the sample according to the currently selected program. The automat can be used for the pretreatment of charcoal, wood and also collagen from bones.

Paracetamol is a common agent taken in deliberate self-poisoning and in accidental overdose in adults and children. Paracetamol poisoning is the commonest cause of severe acute liver injury. Since the publication of the previous guidelines in 2015, several studies have changed practice. A working group of experts in the area, with representation from all Poisons Information Centres of Australia and New Zealand, were brought together to produce an updated evidence-based guidance.

Charcoal production activities at the Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve (MMFR) in Peninsular Malaysia have a potential to emit volatile compounds such as Hg back into the ambient environment, raising concerns on the public health and safety. The present study was aimed at analyzing Hg concentration from different plant/animal tissues and sediment samples (in total 786 samples) to understand clearly the Hg distribution at the MMFR. Leaves of Rhizophora spp. showed higher Hg concentration with an increasing trend from young, to mature, to senescent and decomposing stages, which was possibly due to accumulation of Hg over time. The low Hg concentration in Rhizophora roots and bark suggests a limited absorption from the sediments and a meagre accumulation/partitioning by the plant tissue, respectively. In the case of mangrove cockles the concentration of Hg was lower than the permissible limits for seafood consumption. Although the mangrove gastropod - Cassidula aurisfelis Bruguière had rather elevated Hg in the muscle tissue, it is still less than the environmental safely limit. Beside the chances of atmospheric deposition for Hg, the sediment samples were found to be unpolluted in nature, indicating that in general the MMFR is still safe in terms of Hg pollution.

Astrocytes play many distinct roles in the nervous system providing structural support for neurons and maintaining blood-brain barrier integrity. Steroid hormones exhibit a broad spectrum of actions in the central and peripheral nervous system, acting as trophic factors affecting cell differentiation and synaptic plasticity. In steroidogenesis, astrocytes play a key role by producing cholesterol, progesterone (P4), testosterone (T), and estradiol (E2). Currently there are only few studies which show that the Gly-Val-Ala-Pro-Gly (VGVAPG) peptide may affect the metabolism of astrocytes. Therefore, due to the role of neurosteroids, it is necessary to determine whether VGVAPG affects the level of E2, P4, and T in astrocytes. Primary mouse astrocytes were maintained in DMEM/F12 without phenol red, and supplemented with 10% charcoal/dextran-treated fetal bovine serum. Cells were exposed to 10 nM and 1 µM VGVAPG peptide and co-treated with cSrc kinase inhibitor I. After cell stimulation, we measured the Ki67 protein level and the production and secretion of P4, T, and E2. Our report presents the novel finding that the VGVAPG peptide affects the production and secretion of neurosteroids in astrocytes in vitro. The VGVAPG peptide increases the production of P4; however, at the same time, it decreases the secretion of P4 by astrocytes. On the other hand, it stimulates the production and secretion of T. Interestingly, the production of E2 did not change in any studied time interval. The expression of Ki67 protein increased after 48 h of exposition to the VGVAPG peptide. The cSrc kinase inhibitor I prevented most of the effects of VGVAPG peptide. Therefore, we postulate that T and cSrc kinase may be responsible for increasing astrocyte proliferation.

Waterpipe (hookah, shisha, narghileh) smoking is emerging as an epidemic, particularly among young people in the USA and globally. Unlike cigarettes, waterpipe smoking involves several components (eg, tobacco, charcoal, device and venues) and is characterised by unique smoking patterns that expose smokers to significant amounts of nicotine and other toxic substances. With the rising prevalence of use among young people and continuing misperceptions about waterpipe's harmful nature, a better understanding of health risks associated with waterpipe smoking is warranted. In response to waterpipe's rising trends, a Deeming Rule that extended the US Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) regulatory authority to all tobacco products was issued in 2016. This rule includes waterpipe tobacco, components and parts. This development created the need for evidence to guide the FDA into best evidence-based strategies to limit waterpipe's spread among young people and harm to public health. This special issue presents some of the studies that were funded under the 'Chemistry, Toxicology, and Addiction Research on Waterpipe Tobacco' programme to inform promising regulatory action on waterpipe products. In this preamble, we briefly summarise findings from these studies and discusses their policy and regulatory implications for different waterpipe products and components.

Over the past decades, extensive efforts have been made to use biomass-based-materials for wastewater-treatment. The first purpose of this study was to develop and characterize regenerated-reed/reed-charcoal (RR-ChR), an enhanced biosorbent from Tunisian-reed (Phragmites-australis). The second aim was to assess and optimize the RR-ChR use for the removal of binary ciprofloxacin antibiotic (CIP) and methylene blue dye (MB), using Central Composite Design under Response Surface methodology. The third purpose was to explain the mechanisms involved in the biosorption-process. The study revealed that the highest removal-percentages (76.66 % for the CIP and 100 % for the MB) were obtained under optimum conditions: 1.55 g/L of adsorbent, 35 mg/L of CIP, 75 mg/L of MB, a pH of 10.42 and 115.28 min contact time. It showed that the CIP biosorption mechanism was described by Brouers-Sotolongo-fractal model, with regression-coefficient (R2) of 0.9994 and a Person's Chi-square (X2) of 0.01. The Hill kinetic model better described the MB biosorption (R2 = 1 and X2 = 1.0E-4). The isotherm studies showed that the adsorbent surface was heterogeneous and the best nonlinear-fit was obtained with the Jovanovich (R2 = 0.9711), and Brouers-Sotolongo (R2 = 0.9723) models, for the CIP and MB adsorption, respectively. Finally, the RR-ChR lignocellulosic-biocomposite-powder could be adopted as efficient and cost-effective adsorbent.
