  • Reducing atmosphere packaging as a novel alternative technique for extending shelf life of fresh cheese. [Journal Article]
    J Food Sci Technol. 2020 Aug; 57(8):3013-3023.Alwazeer D, Tan K, Örs B
  • An atmosphere composed of hydrogen gas-included gaseous mixture was tested for packaging fresh cheese samples. The cheese samples were packaged in reducing atmosphere packaging (RAP) [RAP 1 (90% CO2/6% N2/4% H2), RAP 2 (50% CO2/46% N2/4% H2)], modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) [MAP 1 (90% CO2/10% N2), MAP 2 (50% CO2/50% N2) and MAP 3 (Air)], and unpackaged (control) conditions without using any…
  • Recovery of aerobic gram-negative bacteria from the Copan Eswab transport system after long-term storage. [Journal Article]
    Diagn Microbiol Infect Dis. 2020 Jun 06; 98(1):115100.Tops SCM, Kolmus M, … Kolwijck E
  • We evaluated the Copan Eswab transport system for the quantitative recovery of Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa after 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 days of storage at room and refrigerator temperatures, and 7 and 30 days of storage at -80 °C and -20 °C using mono- and polymicrobial samples. The study was based on Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) M40-A2 sta…
  • Methane, arsenic, selenium and the origins of the DMSO reductase family. [Journal Article]
    Sci Rep. 2020 Jul 02; 10(1):10946.Wells M, Kanmanii NJ, … Stolz JF
  • Mononuclear molybdoenzymes of the dimethyl sulfoxide reductase (DMSOR) family catalyze a number of reactions essential to the carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, arsenic, and selenium biogeochemical cycles. These enzymes are also ancient, with many lineages likely predating the divergence of the last universal common ancestor into the Bacteria and Archaea domains. We have constructed rooted phylogenies for…
  • [Start-up of CANON Process and Short-cut Nitrification in a Pilot-scale MBBR Reactor]. [Journal Article]
Huan Jing Ke Xue. 2020 Mar 08; 41(3):1393-1400.Fu KM, Yang ZY, … Zhang XH
  • Using a 150 L moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR), with the temperature controlled at 28℃ and high NH4+-N concentration (average concentration 350 mg·L-1), inorganic wastewater was used as an influent to start the completely autotrophic nitrogen removal over nitrite (CANON) process. Meanwhile, the flocculent sludge was taken into a 5 L sequencing batch reactor, and the influent NH4+-N concentration…
  • Environmental and Sex Effects on Bacterial Carriage by Adult House Flies (Musca domestica L.). [Journal Article]
    Insects. 2020 Jun 28; 11(7)Neupane S, White K, … Nayduch D
  • Adult house flies frequent microbe-rich sites such as urban dumpsters and animal facilities, and encounter and ingest bacteria during feeding and reproductive activities. Due to unique nutritional and reproductive needs, male and female flies demonstrate different interactions with microbe-rich substrates and therefore dissemination potential. We investigated culturable aerobic bacteria and colif…
  • Blood Bacterial Profiles Associated with HIV Infection and Immune Recovery. [Journal Article]
    J Infect Dis. 2020 Jun 30 [Online ahead of print]Serrano-Villar S, Sanchez-Carrillo S, … Ferrer M
  • HIV infection impairs mucosal immunity and leads to bacterial translocation, fueling chronic inflammation and disease progression. While this is well established, questions remain about the compositional profile of the translocated bacteria, and to what extent it is influenced by ART. Using 16S rDNA targeted sequencing and shotgun proteomics, we show that HIV increases bacterial translocation fro…
  • Antibiotic-induced role interchange between rare and predominant bacteria retained the function of a bacterial community for denitrifying quinoline degradation. [Journal Article]
    J Appl Microbiol. 2020 Jun 27 [Online ahead of print]Zhang X, Chen G, … Zhang X
  • CONCLUSIONS: Functional redundancy due to high biological diversity allowed the role reversal of predominant quinoline-degrading bacteria and other rare bacteria when disturbed by antibiotic stress. Although the abundance of OTU1 was much lower initially, it replaced the essential role of the predominant member OTU8 in the bioreactor community for quinoline degradation once the environmental condition changed. This study indicated that the high biological diversity in a wastewater treatment bacterial community is crucial for maintaining the degrading function of organic pollutants, especially in a changing environment due to external disturbance or stress.
