  • A registry for patients with chronic hypoparathyroidism in Russian adults. [Journal Article]
Endocr Connect. 2020 Jun 01 [Online ahead of print]Gronskaia S, Melnichenko GA, … Belaya Z
  • Hypoparathyroidism and pseudohypoparathyroidism are rare endocrine disorders, characterized by low serum calcium due to inappropriate parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels or resistance to its action. There is little epidemiological information regarding chronic hypoparathyroidism in Russia. This study aims to build a registry database of Russian patients with chronic hypoparathyroidism who were refer…
  • Natural history of non-lethal Raine syndrome during childhood. [Journal Article]
    Orphanet J Rare Dis. 2020 Apr 16; 15(1):93.Mameli C, Zichichi G, … Zuccotti G
  • CONCLUSIONS: Manifestations of RS in those surviving the neonatal period are being increasingly recognized. Our study supports previous findings and provides clinical and biochemical observations and data from longer follow up. Finally, we propose multidisciplinary follow up for patients with non-lethal RS.
  • Quantification of Alfacalcidol Tablets Dissolution Content by Chemical Derivatization and LC-MS. [Journal Article]
    J Anal Methods Chem. 2020; 2020:6201656.Liu Y, Chen X, … Zhang Q
  • Application of liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) in analyzing the content of alfacalcidol tablets dissolution faces big challenges due to the low amount of alfacalcidol in each tablet and the low ionization efficacy of the compound with electrospray ionization (ESI) or atmospheric-pressure chemical ionization (APCI). Here, extraction, derivatization, and LC-MS quantitation method ha…
  • Calcium-Alkali Syndrome Associated with Hypoparathyroidism Following Total Thyroidectomy. [Journal Article]
    Am J Nephrol. 2020; 51(2):160-167.Kuroya S, Yazawa M, … Tominaga N
  • CONCLUSIONS: This retrospective study reveals the high incidence of CAS in patients with hypoparathyroidism after total thyroidectomy. Furthermore, these findings suggest that the serum calcium level, acid-base balance, and renal function should be closely monitored in patients with postsurgical hypoparathyroidism who receive large doses of active vitamin D.
  • The impact of active vitamin D administration on the clinical outcomes of acne vulgaris. [Journal Article]
J Dermatolog Treat. 2020 Jan 03 [Online ahead of print]Ahmed Mohamed A, Salah Ahmed EM, … El Borolossy R
  • Acne vulgaris is one of the most common chronic inflammatory skin disorder affecting millions of people worldwide. Vitamin D deficiency has a role in various inflammatory skin diseases as acne. This study aimed to investigate the serum level of 25 hydroxy vitamin D in acne patients and to assess the efficacy and safety of active vitamin D in management of acne. This study was conducted on 100 pat…
  • Paradoxical deterioration in seizure control due to anticonvulsant-induced hypocalcaemia. [Case Reports]
    BMJ Case Rep. 2019 Dec 05; 12(12)Gauci Z, Rizzo C, … Cachia MJ
  • Hepatic cytochrome P450 enzyme induction is associated with certain antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) and may result in hypocalcaemia secondary to vitamin D deficiency. We report a case of a 44-year-old man with a history of epilepsy, who presented with breakthrough seizures after having previously been seizure-free for 11 years. Investigations revealed severe hypocalcaemia with a corrected calcium of 1…
  • Pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP) in idiopathic hypoparathyroidism. [Case Reports]
    BMJ Case Rep. 2019 Nov 10; 12(11)Saha S, Madan K, … Goswami R
  • Idiopathic hypoparathyroidism (IH) and autoimmune pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP) are rare disorders. A patient with IH and optimal calcaemic control on calcium and alfacalcidol was detected to have PAP after 8 years of follow-up. Patient had no respiratory complaints. Routine abdominal imaging for renal calcification showed patchy ground glass opacities in the lower lung fields leading to i…
  • Effect of etelcalcetide on cardiac hypertrophy in hemodialysis patients: a randomized controlled trial (ETECAR-HD). [Journal Article]
    Trials. 2019 Oct 24; 20(1):601.Dörr K, Kammer M, … Oberbauer R
  • CONCLUSIONS: The causal inference and pathophysiology of LVH regression by FGF23 reduction using calcimimetic treatment has not yet been shown. This intervention study has the potential to discover a new strategy for the treatment of cardiac hypertrophy and fibrosis in patients on maintenance hemodialysis. It might be speculated that successful treatment of cardiac morphology will also reduce the risk of cardiac death in this population.
  • FGF23 and Associated Disorders of Phosphate Wasting. [Review]
Pediatr Endocrinol Rev. 2019 Sep; 17(1):17-34.Gohil A, Imel EA
  • Fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23), one of the endocrine fibroblast growth factors, is a principal regulator in the maintenance of serum phosphorus concentration. Binding to its cofactor αKlotho and a fibroblast growth factor receptor is essential for its activity. Its regulation and interaction with other factors in the bone-parathyroid-kidney axis is complex. FGF23 reduces serum phosphorus con…
  • Influence of Vitamin D on Islet Autoimmunity and Beta-Cell Function in Type 1 Diabetes. [Review]
    Nutrients. 2019 Sep 11; 11(9)Infante M, Ricordi C, … Fabbri A
  • Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a chronic autoimmune disease leading to immune-mediated destruction of pancreatic beta cells, resulting in the need for insulin therapy. The incidence of T1D is increasing worldwide, thus prompting researchers to investigate novel immunomodulatory strategies to halt autoimmunity and modify disease progression. T1D is considered as a multifactorial disease, in which geneti…
  • FGF23, Hypophosphatemia, and Emerging Treatments. [Review]
JBMR Plus. 2019 Aug; 3(8):e10190.Imel EA, Biggin A, … Munns CF
  • FGF23 is an important hormonal regulator of phosphate homeostasis. Together with its co-receptor Klotho, it modulates phosphate reabsorption and both 1α-hydroxylation and 24-hydroxylation in the renal proximal tubules. The most common FGF23-mediated hypophosphatemia is X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH), caused by mutations in the PHEX gene. FGF23-mediated forms of hypophosphatemia are characterized…
  • Lessons learned from the management of Hungry Bone Syndrome following the removal of an Atypical Parathyroid Adenoma. [Case Reports]
    J Musculoskelet Neuronal Interact. 2019 09 01; 19(3):379-384.Florakis D, Karakozis S, … Makras P
  • Hungry Bone Syndrome (HBS) refers to rapid, profound, and prolonged hypocalcemia associated with hypophosphatemia and hypomagnesemia occurring in patients with increased bone turnover after successful management of the underlying disorder. We describe a male patient with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT), in whom HBS was diagnosed 6 months after parathyroidectomy. Histopathologic examination rev…
