  • Cerebral mucormycosis masquerading as brain metastasis from lung cancer: A case report. [Case Reports]
    Heliyon. 2023 Jan; 9(1):e12761.Cai Y, Wu Q, … Liu Z
  • We report a rare case of concurrent pulmonary and cerebral mucormycosis initially misdiagnosed as a metastatic tumor. A 66-year-old man with a complaint of progressive right-sided limb weakness for 3 days. Head MRI showed a left parietal occupying lesion with severe edema, and a chest CT scan showed a parenchymal mass with speculation and pleural invasion in his left lung. The patient was initial…
  • Manifestations of Mucormycosis and Its Complications in COVID-19 Patients: A Case Series Study. [Journal Article]
    Ear Nose Throat J. 2022 Dec 29 [Online ahead of print]Kordjazi M, Bazgir N, … Dilmaghani NA
  • CONCLUSIONS: SARS-CoV-2 increases the susceptibility to mucormycosis infection in various ways. Uncontrolled level of HbA1c in all patients, even non-diabetic individuals, indicates hyperglycemia over the past three months. Diabetes, orbital exenteration, ptosis, periorbital swelling, DKA, LOC, brain involvement, and mechanical ventilation all correlated with a higher rate of ICU admission and 30-day mortality. In addition, a higher white blood cell count is related to the higher probability of ICU admission. While considering all of the inflammatory laboratory data and HbA1c could help predict 30-day mortality.
  • A difficult-to-treat pleuropulmonary histoplasmosis in a patient with rheumatoid arthritis in Taiwan. [Journal Article]
J Microbiol Immunol Infect. 2022 Dec 13 [Online ahead of print]Chu WK, Wu UI, … Chen YC
  • Amphotericin B and itraconazole are the primary agents for treating histoplasmosis. Newer azoles are alternatives for patients refractory to or intolerant of standard therapy. We report an 83-year-old woman with rheumatoid arthritis complicated with pleuropulmonary histoplasmosis who responded to liposomal amphotericin B, but progressed under voriconazole and posaconazole maintenance therapy.
  • Clinical Phenotypes of COVID-19 Associated Mucormycosis (CAM): A Comprehensive Review. [Review]
    Diagnostics (Basel). 2022 Dec 08; 12(12)Almyroudi MP, Akinosoglou K, … Dimopoulos G
  • A mucormycosis surge was reported during the COVID-19 pandemic in India. A literature search until 14 July 2022, with the aim of updating COVID-19-associated mucormycosis (CAM), identified 663 studies and 88 met inclusion criteria (8727 patients). India reported 8388 patients, Egypt 208 and Europe 40. Rhino-orbito-cerebral mucormycosis (ROCM) was identified among 8082 (98.3%) patients, followed b…

  • Preclinical Studies of the Nebulized Delivery of Liposomal Amphotericin B. [Journal Article]
    J Aerosol Med Pulm Drug Deliv. 2022 12; 35(6):307-312.Kothari S, Kefalos SG, … Husain S
  • Background: Intravenous liposomal amphotericin B (L-AMB) has accompanying side effects that may be diminished when administering an inhaled form. Delivery systems for inhaled or aerosolized L-AMB vary, and there has not been a recent comparison of available systems to date. Methods: We compared three differently designed nebulizer delivery systems for the inhaled delivery of L-AMB to determine th…

  • We report on a case of probable invasive Auerobasidium spp. pulmonary infection in a patient with myelodysplastic syndrome. The patient was successfully treated with liposomal amphotericin B monotherapy, with transition to orally administered isavuconazole. This case shows an atypical initial radiological presentation with diffuse ground-glass opacities, as previously demonstrated in cases of Aur…
  • Amphotericin B induced pancytopenia. [Case Reports]
J Family Med Prim Care. 2022 Sep; 11(9):5692-5695.Vaish E, Gupta KK, … Singh KK
  • Amphotericin B (AMB) has been the irreplaceable drug of choice for countless fungal and protozoal infections. One of the lesser-known adverse effects of AMB is Pancytopenia - very rare with very few cases reported - most commonly observed following prolonged administration. We report the case of a patient suffering from visceral leishmaniasis, who developed worsening pancytopenia four to five day…
