  • StatPearls: Methylene Blue [BOOK]
. StatPearls Publishing: Treasure Island (FL) Bistas Evangelos E Medical University of the Americas Sanghavi Devang D Mayo Clinic BOOK
  • Methylene blue has FDA approval for the treatment of methemoglobinemia, a condition when Fe2+ of hemoglobin gets oxidized to Fe3+, reducing the oxygen-carrying capacity of hemoglobin, and typically presents with cyanosis of the lips and extremities, characteristic "chocolate-colored urine," and hypoxia.[1] Methemoglobinemia results from exposure to certain drugs such as dapsone, a drug indicated …
  • Exogenous NO Therapy for the Treatment and Prevention of Atherosclerosis. [Review]
    Int J Mol Sci. 2020 Apr 13; 21(8)Gori T
  • Amyl nitrite was introduced in 1867 as the first molecule of a new class of agents for the treatment of angina pectoris. In the following 150 years, the nitric oxide pathway has been the subject of a number of pharmacological approaches, particularly since when this elusive mediator was identified as one of the most important modulators of vascular homeostasis beyond vasomotion, including platele…
  • [Multifocal Electroretinography in Patients with Poppers Maculopathy]. [Journal Article]
    Klin Monbl Augenheilkd. 2019 Aug; 236(8):1004-1011.Pahlitzsch M, Salchow D, … Bergholz R
  • CONCLUSIONS: Compared to a healthy control group, the multifocal electroretinogram of patients with poppers maculopathy shows no relevant impairment. This contrasts the marked effect of the disease on visual acuity. In clinical practice, poppers maculopathy cannot be diagnosed by multifocal electroretinography.
  • Poppers: legal highs with questionable contents? A case series of poppers maculopathy. [Journal Article]
    Br J Ophthalmol. 2017 11; 101(11):1530-1534.Rewbury R, Hughes E, … Baron M
  • Poppers are volatile alkyl nitrite compounds that are inhaled to enhance sexual experience and for their psychoactive effects. A less well-known side effect is foveal maculopathy, which has emerged following changes in their chemical composition. It is unclear if certain individuals are more susceptible to retinal damage or if there is a relationship between pattern of inhalation and brands used.
  • Abuse potential and dopaminergic effect of alkyl nitrites. [Journal Article]
    Neurosci Lett. 2016 08 26; 629:68-72.Jeon SY, Kim YJ, … Cha HJ
  • The abuse of alkyl nitrites is common among adolescents and young adults worldwide. However, the information regarding the effects of alkyl nitrites on the central nervous system and the associated psychological abuse potential is scarce. The abuse potential of 3 representative alkyl nitrites - isobutyl nitrite, isoamyl nitrite, and butyl nitrite - was evaluated in mice using conditioned place pr…
  • Neurotoxicity induced by alkyl nitrites: Impairment in learning/memory and motor coordination. [Journal Article]
Neurosci Lett. 2016 Apr 21; 619:79-85.Cha HJ, Kim YJ, … Kim HS
  • Although alkyl nitrites are used as recreational drugs, there is only little research data regarding their effects on the central nervous system including their neurotoxicity. This study investigated the neurotoxicity of three representative alkyl nitrites (isobutyl nitrite, isoamyl nitrite, and butyl nitrite), and whether it affected learning/memory function and motor coordination in rodents. Mo…
  • Past, present and future of cyanide antagonism research: From the early remedies to the current therapies. [Review]
    World J Methodol. 2015 Jun 26; 5(2):88-100.Petrikovics I, Budai M, … Thompson DE
  • This paper reviews milestones in antidotal therapies for cyanide (CN) spanning early remedies, current antidotal systems and research towards next generation therapies. CN has been a part of plant defense mechanisms for millions of years. It became industrially important in the nineteenth century with the advent of CN assisted gold mining and the use of CN as a pest control agent. The biochemical…
  • [Case report - a dangerous intoxication after ingestion of alkyl nitrite ("poppers")]. [Case Reports]
    Anasthesiol Intensivmed Notfallmed Schmerzther. 2014 Dec; 49(11-12):654-8.Bernasconi B, Konrad C, Fischer S
  • This case report describes the inadvertent poisoning of a young man with "poppers" after having ingested an unknown amout of the drug. "Poppers" (alkyl nitrite) were made famous in the 1960s as a party drug, and during certain sexual practices, and are still in use today. The drug's inhalation leads to a short-lived rush, vasodilation and relaxtion of smooth muscles. An accidental ingestion can l…
