  • Decorative animations impair recall and are a source of extraneous cognitive load. [Journal Article]
Adv Physiol Educ. 2020 Sep 01; 44(3):376-382.Pink A, Newton PM
  • Working memory is critical for learning but has a limited capacity for processing new information in real time. Cognitive load theory is an evidence-based approach to education that seeks to minimize the extraneous (unnecessary) load on working memory to avoid overloading it. The "seductive details effect" postulates that extraneous load can come from instructional design materials that attract i…
  • A Methodology for Visualising Growth and Development of the Human Temporal Bone. [Journal Article]
    Adv Exp Med Biol. 2020; 1262:183-202.Šulek N, Poyade M, Ferguson E
  • This chapter presents a methodological framework which could be used to produce accurate anatomical 3D models and animations of the developing skull, with a focus on the temporal bone. Initial modelling is based on information from core texts and visual references, before optimising these models for use in interactive real-time applications. A series of 3D modelling and animation workflows typica…
  • Animated Guide to Represent a Novel Means of Gut-Brain Axis Communication. [Journal Article]
    Adv Exp Med Biol. 2020; 1262:39-57.Pokojna H, Livingstone D, … Burchmore R
  • Novel scientific concepts must be made understandable to allow their further development, highlighting the need for better communication of abstract ideas that these discoveries are built upon. This project focused on visually communicating the discovery of microbiome-derived molecules that play a major role in microbiome-gut-brain axis communication through multimedia learning.A 4-min animated v…
  • [The deployment of digital services across the 92 Nord health territory]. [Review]
    Soins. 2020 Mar - Apr; 65(843-844):10-13.Kaboré L
  • E-pathway territories are defined to promote the use of digital tools in order to improve the flow of patient pathways. To ensure the successful implementation of these services, all players need to adapt their practices but there also needs to be a change in professional culture.
  • Hypnosis Associated with 3D Immersive Virtual Reality Technology in the Management of Pain: A Review of the Literature. [Review]
    J Pain Res. 2020; 13:1129-1138.Rousseaux F, Bicego A, … Vanhaudenhuyse A
  • Hypnosis is well documented in the literature in the management of acute and chronic pain. Virtual reality (VR) is currently gaining credibility in the same fields as hypnosis for medical applications. Lately, the combination of hypnosis and VR was considered. The aim of this scoping review is to understand the current studied contexts and effects of virtual reality hypnosis (VRH) for the managem…
  • Do Virtual Humans Dream of Digital Sheep? [Journal Article]
    IEEE Comput Graph Appl. 2020 Jul-Aug; 40(4):71-83.Carrozzino MA, Galdieri R, … Potel M
  • As human beings, we are so used to interacting with each other that any world without humans would feel alien to us, including digital ones. In this article, we present a survey on the role of digital human-like characters in virtual worlds, both as counterparts of real human users and as embodied agents driven by artificial intelligence. The main issues related to 3-D graphics, physics, animatio…
  • The impact of active research involvement of young children in the design of a new stereotest. [Journal Article]
    Res Involv Engagem. 2020; 6:29.Casanova T, Black C, … Vancleef K
  • CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrates measurable impact of involvement of very young children in research design through accessible activities. The changes implemented following their feedback significantly improved the understanding of our test. Our approach can inform researchers on how to involve young children in research design and can contribute to developing guidelines for involvement of young children in research.
  • Prioritization of patients access to outpatient augmentative and alternative communication services in Quebec: a decision tool. [Journal Article]
Disabil Rehabil Assist Technol. 2020 Jun 05 [Online ahead of print]Rahimi SA, Dery J, … Routhier F
  • CONCLUSIONS: In this study, we co-developed a prioritization decision tool with the key stakeholders for prioritization of patients who are referred to AAC services in rehabilitation settings.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILIATIONStudies in Canada have shown that people in Canada with a need for rehabilitation services are not receiving publicly available services in a timely manner. There is no standardized tool for the prioritization of AAC patients. In this mixed methods study, we co-developed a prioritization tool with key stakeholders for prioritization of patients who are referred to AAC services in a rehabilitation center in Quebec, Canada.
  • A Physics-based Virtual Reality Simulation Framework for Neonatal Endotracheal Intubation. [Journal Article]
    Proc IEEE Conf Virtual Real 3D User Interfaces. 2020 Mar; 2020:557-565.Xiao X, Zhao S, … Hahn J
  • Neonatal endotracheal intubation (ETI) is a complex procedure. Low intubation success rates for pediatric residents indicate the current training regimen is inadequate for achieving positive patient out-comes. Computer-based training systems in this field have been limited due to the complex nature of simulating in real-time, the anatomical structures, soft tissue deformations and frequent tool i…
  • Storyboarding in Medical Animation. [Journal Article]
Adv Exp Med Biol. 2020; 1235:131-143.Okemow SJ
  • Storyboards are a series of thumbnail images that act as a planning document for your overall animation project. Each thumbnail image is part of what is known as a shot, and shots are strung together to create scenes, which in turn create a whole animation. Medical animations, compared to film or animated movies, have rigid and specific requirements; however, by utilizing storyboards as a plannin…
  • GreenSea: Visual Soccer Analysis Using Broad Learning System. [Journal Article]
IEEE Trans Cybern. 2020 May 21; PPSheng B, Li P, … Chen CLP
  • Modern soccer increasingly places trust in visual analysis and statistics rather than only relying on the human experience. However, soccer is an extraordinarily complex game that no widely accepted quantitative analysis methods exist. The statistics collection and visualization are time consuming which result in numerous adjustments. To tackle this issue, we developed GreenSea, a visual-based as…
  • Pilot study implementing mixed media and animation into the Preclinical Dental Anesthesia Course. [Journal Article]
J Dent Educ. 2020 May 22 [Online ahead of print]Fa BA, Interrante MA, Castagna DM
  • CONCLUSIONS: Results determined 78.6% agreed they would like to see more assessments made with integrated animation and mixed media. Additionally, 77% agreed they would like to see other courses use mixed media assessments. The pilot study implementing mixed media and animation into the preclinical dental anesthesia course was a unique addition to the curriculum engaging students for assessments.
  • Learning the Concept of Function With Dynamic Visualizations. [Journal Article]
    Front Psychol. 2020; 11:693.Rolfes T, Roth J, Schnotz W
  • In this paper we present a laboratory experiment in which 157 secondary-school students learned the concept of function with either static representations or dynamic visualizations. We used two different versions of dynamic visualization in order to evaluate whether interactivity had an impact on learning outcome. In the group learning with a linear dynamic visualization, the students could only …
