- Digital profiling of dysarthria in late- and early-onset Parkinson's disease. [Journal Article]J Parkinsons Dis. 2026 Jul 15; :1877718X261467587. [Online ahead of print]JP
- BackgroundDigital speech analysis affords robust markers of Parkinson's disease (PD). However, most studies target late-onset PD (LOPD), neglecting early-onset PD (EOPD) -an increasingly prevalent subtype. This proof-of-concept study tackles such gap.MethodsWe used machine learning to discriminate persons with EOPD (with symptom onset before age 50) and LOPD (with symptom onset after age 50) from…

- Outcomes of Surgical Treatment for Masada Type lVa Forearm Deformity in Children with Multiple Hereditary Exostosis: A Case Series. [Journal Article]J Orthop Case Rep. 2026 Jul; 16(7):484-490.JO
- CONCLUSIONS: Single-stage surgical correction combining distal ulnar osteochondroma excision with Ulnar lengthening by distraction osteogenesis is safe and reproducible for Masada Type IVa deformity in growing children that prevents radial head dislocation. Early intervention confers the greatest benefit of a normal elbow joint in addition to deformity correction that is consistent in radiological and its functional gains.

- Exploring the Psychosocial Impact and Developing a Quality of Life Scale for Postpalatoplasty and Noncleft Patients With Functional Articulation Disorders. [Journal Article]J Craniofac Surg. 2026 Jul 10. [Online ahead of print]JC
- This study was performed to develop and validate the quality of life scale for postpalatoplasty and noncleft FAD (Functional Articulation Disorder) patients and to survey their quality of life (QoL) status. A mixed-methods scale development process yielded a 20-item instrument. Psychometric properties were evaluated in 128 children (41 postpalatoplasty FAD, 87 noncleft FAD). Speech clarity was as…

- My Voice Library: Protocol for Developing Audio and Visual Datasets to Enable Personalized Real-Time Communication for People With Dysarthria. [Journal Article]JMIR Res Protoc. 2026 Jul 08; 15:e97614.JR
- CONCLUSIONS: My Voice Library embeds high-quality voice and video data assessments through gamified modules based on the Frenchay Dysarthria Assessment 2 and was designed in partnership with an active patient and a public involvement advisory group. My Voice Library and its associated information governance will facilitate the research use of real-world data where ethical approval and consent are given. My Voice Library enables the collection of voice data in controlled yet naturalistic environments for children, enhancing the clinical relevance and quality of the dataset. The modular and gamified design promotes sustained participant engagement, reduces fatigue, and increases the quantity and diversity of data collected.

- Vowel acoustic parameters in speech assessment and rehabilitation of minimally verbal and speech-motor-impaired autistic children: a narrative review. [Review]Front Hum Neurosci. 2026; 20:1752706.FH
- Speech production difficulties in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are heterogeneous and are not uniformly characterized by articulatory impairment across the spectrum. However, some autistic subgroups, particularly minimally verbal children, children with low expressive-language ability, and those with suspected co-occurring speech-motor difficulties, may show atypical vowel-acoustic patterns. - Automatic Speech Recognition and Acoustic Analysis for Dysarthria Assessment in Telerehabilitation: User-Centered Design and Usability Study. [Journal Article]JMIR Form Res. 2026 Jul 03; 10:e85230.JF
- CONCLUSIONS: The prototype demonstrates that automatic intelligibility scoring and acoustic analysis can be integrated into a clinically usable, web-based dashboard. While current limitations include reliance on English-only phoneme analysis, limited advanced acoustic features, and lack of regulatory compliance, the application achieved excellent usability and shows promise for scalable telerehabilitation. Future work should expand multilingual support, incorporate additional acoustic measures, and validate the tool in larger clinical cohorts.

- Self-perception of speech impairment in MS: Associations with dysarthria severity and speech measures. [Journal Article]Mult Scler Relat Disord. 2026 Aug; 112:107342.MS
- CONCLUSIONS: Speech self-perception in individuals with MS was associated with both auditory-perceptual and objective acoustic parameters. Phonation time emerged as a sensitive acoustic marker, associated with perceived speech impairment, supporting the inclusion of brief articulatory tasks in screening protocols and reinforcing the clinical relevance of patient-reported speech outcomes within an integrative assessment framework.

- Cleft Lip/Palate Speech: Optimizing Speech Outcomes With Limited Speech Pathology Resources. [Review]Ann Plast Surg. 2026 Jul 01; 97(1S):S69-S75.AP
- Children born with cleft palate, with or without cleft lip (CP ± L), are at high risk for speech and resonance disorders that can significantly impact communication and quality of life. Causes of cleft-related speech disorders include velopharyngeal insufficiency, malocclusion, dental anomalies, and airway obstruction. Accurate differential diagnosis is critical, as mismanagement can result in un…

- Background/Objectives: Clinical childbirth in high-income countries is increasingly shaped by standardised routines that do not always accommodate individual preferences. In Germany, approximately one in eight pregnant persons experiences clinically significant childbirth-related post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms, with pregnant persons facing language or health-literacy barriers being at pa…

- Thinning of the oral motor cortex is linked to impaired speech in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. [Journal Article]Amyotroph Lateral Scler Frontotemporal Degener. 2026 Jun 23; :1-12. [Online ahead of print]AL
- Most individuals with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) develop bulbar impairment as their disease progresses. The ALS Functional Rating Scale-Revised (ALSFRS-R) bulbar subscore and neurological examination of upper (UMN) and lower motor neurons (LMN) are routinely used to assess this dysfunction but have inherent limitations. Speech‑derived measures have shown promise for capturing bulbar decl…

- Carbamazepine-Induced Paroxysmal Dysarthria and Ataxia in an Elderly Patient: A Case Report and Clinical Considerations. [Case Reports]
- To report a case of carbamazepine-induced neurotoxicity presenting as paroxysmal dysarthria with ataxia, and to highlight clinical risk factors and diagnostic challenges. This case mimicked a transient ischemic attack (TIA), representing a significant diagnostic pitfall. We present the case of a 71-year-old woman who developed acute paroxysmal dysarthria and ataxia after initiating carbamazepine …

- Multimodal Architecture for Phoneme Labeling Imprecision in Dysarthric Speech: Integrating Transformers and TCNs for Clinical Rehabilitation. [Review]J Vis Exp. 2026 May 26; (231).JV
- Due to articulation issues and phoneme variability, speech disorders such as dysarthria pose significant challenges in clinical rehabilitation. Traditional automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems, which are typically trained on normative datasets, often fail to accurately decode dysarthric speech. Recent breakthroughs in artificial intelligence and deep learning have allowed the integration of…

- Automated measurement of speaking and articulation rates holds promise as a scalable alternative to manual analysis in clinical populations. This study evaluated a Praat-based script that estimates global speech timing by detecting syllable nuclei via amplitude dips. Speaking rate (syllables/total duration) and articulation rate (syllables/speaking time) were measured manually and with an automat…
