  • Practicing land degradation neutrality (LDN) approach in the Shazand Watershed, Iran. [Journal Article]
Sci Total Environ 2019; 698:134319Kiani-Harchegani M, Sadeghi SH
  • Neutralizing land degradation due to overexploitation of natural resources is an acceptable strategy under developing conditions. However, this important approach has not been adequately introduced and adopted in the world. The present study therefore aimed to calculate Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) for the Shazand Watershed with an area about 1740 km2 located in central arid and semi-arid re…
  • Cultivation and growth dynamics of endophytic fungi in a solid culture medium based on sugar beet pulp. [Journal Article]
J Sci Food Agric 2019Vázquez de Aldana BR, Cuesta MJ, Zabalgogeazcoa I
  • CONCLUSIONS: A solid culture medium based on beet pulp supported the growth of diverse taxa of fungal endophytes. Both the water and calcium salt content of the growth medium affected the efficiency of mycelium production. Considering these factors, beet pulp medium was an excellent endophyte cultivation medium because of the high yield of fungal biomass observed, plus its ease of handling and scaling up production. • Biological Kerker Effect Boosts Light Collection Efficiency in Plants. [Journal Article]
    Nano Lett 2019Barhom H, Machnev AA, … Ginzburg P
  • Being the polymorphs of calcium carbonate (CaCO3), vaterite and calcite have attracted a great deal of attention as promising biomaterials for drug delivery and tissue engineering applications. Furthermore, they are important biogenic minerals, enabling living organisms to reach specific functions. In nature, vaterite and calcite monocrystals typically form self-assembled polycrystal micro- and n…
  • Enhanced calcite precipitation for crack healing by bacteria isolated under low-nitrogen conditions. [Journal Article]
    Appl Microbiol Biotechnol 2019; 103(19):7971-7982Zhang J, Xie L, … Deng X
  • A nitrogen-starving isolation strategy was developed for the first time to screen bacteria with high calcium-precipitating activity (CPA) for bioremediation of damage in porous media. Meanwhile, a novel mini-tube method based on the detection of insoluble Ca2+ was established to evaluate the CPA of the isolates. A low-nitrogen-demanding strain B6, identified as Bacillus sp., was screened to exhib…
  • A fungal mycelium templates the growth of aragonite needles. [Journal Article]
    J Mater Chem B 2019Livne A, Mijowska SC, … Pokroy B
  • Fungi live within diverse environments and survive well under extreme conditions that are usually beyond the tolerance of most other organisms. In different environments fungi are known to induce precipitation of a wide range of minerals. Various species of fungi have been shown to facilitate calcium carbonate mineralization. Here, inspired by examples of needle-fiber calcite formed via fungus-in…
