  • Urology Individual Critical Task List: Creation and Validation of a Simulation Curriculum. [Journal Article]
Mil Med. 2020 Jul 03 [Online ahead of print]Hertz AM, Devasahayam R, … Caras RJ
  • CONCLUSIONS: The novel urology ICTL curriculum using simulation is a feasible and well-received way to keep competency on these tasks and maintain readiness. Face and content validity was established for the urology ICTL simulation curriculum, and the curriculum is exportable to equip urologists at other facilities for the urology ICTLs and for deployments, where life-saving interventions may be necessary from urologists that may be outside their ordinary scope of practice.
  • Pyriform Sinus Tract Injury After Traumatic Intubation With Resulting Tension Pneumothorax. [Case Reports]
Ochsner J. 2020 Summer; 20(2):222-225.Cefalu JN, Williams DC, … Kaye AD
  • Background: Tension pneumothorax is a serious, potentially life-threatening condition with numerous etiologies. Hypopharyngeal injury, a possible complication of endotracheal intubation, can lead to tension pneumothorax. We describe a hypopharyngeal injury that occurred during endotracheal intubation that resulted in tension pneumothorax. Case Report: A 30-year-old female underwent emergent ches…
  • Intrapleural Fibrinolytic Therapy in Loculated Pleural Effusions. [Journal Article]
J Assoc Physicians India. 2020 Jun; 68(6):32-34.Barthwal MS
  • About 36% to 57% of bacterial pneumonias develop parapneumonic effusion. When the chest tube is correctly positioned as evidenced by postero-anterior and lateral chest radiographs and there is a significant amount of pleural fluid, the major reasons for failed drainage are multiple pleural space loculations or tube obstruction by thick and viscous fluid. The various modalities of treatment availa…
  • The Source of the Problem. [Journal Article]
    Acute Med. 2019; 18(1):49-50.Moffitt P, Williamson A, Stenhouse P
  • The portable chest x-ray (Figure 1) shows a widened cardiac silhouette. An endotracheal tube is in situ, indicating the patient is now intubated. The ECG (Figure 2) shows sinus rhythm with widespread mixed convex and concave ST elevation, most notable in V4, V5 and the lateral leads. There is a suggestion of PR depression in the inferior leads.
  • Major Bleeding after Surgical Revascularization with Dual Antiplatelet Therapy. [Journal Article]
Thorac Cardiovasc Surg. 2020 Jun 27 [Online ahead of print]Schlachtenberger G, Deppe AC, … Wahlers TCW
  • CONCLUSIONS:  Dual antiplatelet therapy is associated with higher rates of major bleeding. Further studies should examine the difference in the prevalence of major bleeding complications in the different dual antiplatelet therapy regimes in patients requiring urgent surgery.
  • Dependent lesion positioning at CT-guided lung biopsy to reduce risk of pneumothorax. [Journal Article]
Eur Radiol. 2020 Jun 27 [Online ahead of print]Appel E, Dommaraju S, … Brook OR
  • CONCLUSIONS: Interventional radiologists can reduce the pneumothorax risk during the CT-guided biopsy by positioning the biopsy site below the trachea.• Positioning patient with lesion to be below the trachea for the CT-guided lung biopsy results in lower rate of pneumothorax, as compared with the lesion above the trachea. • Positioning patient with lesion to be below the trachea for the CT-guided lung biopsy does not affect rate of procedure-associated pulmonary hemorrhage or hemoptysis.
  • The MPB64 immunochromatography assay: an analysis of doubtful results. [Journal Article]
    Trop Doct. 2020 Jun 26 [Online ahead of print]Kumar C, Shrivastava K, … Varma-Basil M
  • Culture remains the gold standard for tuberculosis (TB) diagnosis, and the mycobacteria growth indicator tube (MGIT), endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO), is widely used. Further identification of a positive culture is done with the help of an immunochromatography assay, which often shows faint bands that are difficult to interpret. We analysed 125 BACTEC MGIT culture positive results…
  • Frequency Responses of Conventional and Amplified Stethoscopes for Measuring Heart Sounds. [Journal Article]
Saudi J Med Med Sci. 2020 May-Aug; 8(2):112-117.Alanazi AA, Atcherson SR, … Bryan MF
  • CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that amplified stethoscopes provided better amplification of normal and abnormal heart sounds across the five measured frequencies. Therefore, health professionals should interpret manufacturer claims regarding gain (dB) and frequency (Hz) with caution, and those with hearing loss should carefully investigate the "audio performance" of the stethoscopes. Future research should focus on these effects through coupling with hearing aids.
  • Physiotherapy Care of Patients with Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) - A Brazilian Experience. [Journal Article]
Clinics (Sao Paulo). 2020; 75:e2017.Righetti RF, Onoue MA, … Yamaguti WP
  • Some patients with coronavirus disease (COVID-19) present with severe acute respiratory syndrome, which causes multiple organ dysfunction, besides dysfunction of the respiratory system, that requires invasive procedures. On the basis of the opinions of front-line experts and a review of the relevant literature on several topics, we proposed clinical practice recommendations on the following aspec…
  • The results and outcome of primary spontaneous pneumothorax in adolescents. [Journal Article]
Int J Adolesc Med Health. 2020 Jun 07 [Online ahead of print]Akıncı SM, Soyer T, … Tanyel FC
  • Aim Primary spontaneous pneumothorax (PSP) is a rare pulmonary pathology that occurs in the absence of known lung disease. A retrospective study was performed to evaluate the results and outcome of PSP treatment in adolescents. Methods The cases with PSP from January 2004 to December 2017 were evaluated for age, sex, family and smoking history, clinical and radiological findings and results of tr…
  • Radiologically Guided Management of Secondary Spontaneous Pneumothorax. [Case Reports]
Radiol Case Rep. 2020 Jul; 15(7):1115-1118.Aljehani Y, Alshamekh A, AlQatari AA
  • Secondary spontaneous pneumothorax is a serious medical condition that typically occurs in patients with an underlying lung pathology such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Those patients are usually compromised and more amenable to higher morbidity and mortality rates. Moreover, they are poor candidates for general anesthesia and mechanical ventilation due to their poor health condition.…
  • Thoracoscopic Surgery to Treat Lung Metastases from Refractory Choriocarcinoma. [Journal Article]
    Cancer Manag Res. 2020; 12:3851-3858.Zhao L, Qin Y, … Liu H
  • CONCLUSIONS: The minimally invasive video-assisted thoracoscopic approach is a valuable and safe treatment for refractory choriocarcinoma patients with lung metastases. Lymphadenectomy is not suggested for these patients. Patients with decreased postoperative β-hCG levels may achieve a much better prognostic result.
