  • Severe ileocecal inflammatory syndrome in adult patients with cystic fibrosis. [Case Reports]
    Z Gastroenterol 2019; 57(3):312-316Henker R, Oltmanns A, … Karlas T
  • The relevance of gastrointestinal manifestations of cystic fibrosis (CF) is increasing due to an improved life expectancy. We report on 2 adult patients with prior lung transplantation who presented with a severe inflammatory disorder of the ileocecal region. One patient underwent ileocecal resection; the second patient died after emergency surgery for intestinal perforation. Both cases did not s…
  • Meconium Ileus. [Review]
Clin Colon Rectal Surg 2018; 31(2):121-126Waldhausen JHT, Richards M
  • Cystic fibrosis is one of the most common inheritable traits in Caucasians. Meconium ileus and its potential complications are the most likely reasons that these patients will need surgical care. Surgical intervention is usually needed in the neonatal period but may also be required later in life. This article discusses the various ways cystic fibrosis can affect the gastrointestinal tract. Both …
  • Correlation of abnormal histology with endoscopic findings among mycophenolate mofetil treated patients. [Journal Article]
    World J Gastrointest Endosc 2017; 9(8):405-410Izower MA, Rahman M, … Sultan K
  • CONCLUSIONS: Our results demonstrate a high rate of left sided disease and microscopic findings without gross mucosal abnormalities among patients using MMF. Also, a broader definition of MMF-colonopathy may be appropriate, with a majority of our abnormal histology falling outside of the more narrowly defined MMF-colitis category. Given the high frequency of isolated microscopic abnormalities and distal disease, sigmoidoscopy with random biopsies may be an appropriate, less invasive initial endoscopic examination in selected MMF patients.
  • Beyond pancreatic insufficiency and liver disease in cystic fibrosis. [Review]
    Eur J Pediatr 2016; 175(7):881-94Demeyer S, De Boeck K, … Cosaert K
  • CONCLUSIONS: We describe the clinical presentation and treatment of more common conditions like gastroesophageal reflux, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, intussusception, meconium ileus, distal intestinal obstruction syndrome, and constipation, and we also discuss what is known on celiac disease, appendicitis, fibrosing colonopathy, inflammation and inflammatory bowel disease and gastrointestinal cancer.
  • Cystic Fibrosis below the Diaphragm: Abdominal Findings in Adult Patients. [Review]
Radiographics 2015 May-Jun; 35(3):680-95Lavelle LP, McEvoy SH, … Malone DE
  • Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common lethal autosomal recessive disease in the white population. Mutation of the CF transmembrane conductance regulator gene on chromosome 7 results in production of abnormally viscous mucus and secretions in the lungs of patients with CF. A similar pathologic process occurs in the gastrointestinal tract, pancreas, and hepatobiliary system. Inspissated mucus cau…
