  • Tea tree oil for Demodex blepharitis. [Review]
Cochrane Database Syst Rev. 2020 06 20; 6:CD013333.Savla K, Le JT, Pucker AD
  • CONCLUSIONS: The current review suggests that there is uncertainty related to the effectiveness of 5% to 50% tea tree oil for the short-term treatment of Demodex blepharitis; however, if used, lower concentrations may be preferable in the eye care arena to avoid induced ocular irritation. Future studies should be better controlled, assess outcomes at long term (e.g. 10 to 12 weeks or beyond), account for patient compliance, and study the effects of different tea tree oil concentrations.

  • Malassezia restricta is an opportunistic fungal pathogen on human skin; it is associated with various skin diseases, including seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff, which are usually treated using ketoconazole. In this study, we clinically isolated ketoconazole-resistant M. restricta strains (KCTC 27529 and KCTC 27550) from patients with dandruff. To understand the mechanisms of ketoconazole resist…
  • Randomized trial of topical periocular castor oil treatment for blepharitis. [Journal Article]
Ocul Surf. 2020 May 15 [Online ahead of print]Muntz A, Sandford E, … Craig JP
  • CONCLUSIONS: Topical castor oil application effected significant improvements in ocular surface signs and symptoms in patients with blepharitis. The favourable therapeutic profile would suggest that castor oil demonstrates promise as a potential treatment for blepharitis, and support further efficacy trials with longer follow up.
  • Demodex blepharokeratoconjunctivitis affecting young patients: A case series. [Journal Article]
    Indian J Ophthalmol. 2020 May; 68(5):745-749.Patel NV, Mathur U, … Singh M
  • CONCLUSIONS: Demodex infestation of eyelids can lead to chronic blepharokeratoconjunctivitis in healthy pediatric and young adult patients who otherwise have good hygiene, which can often be overlooked or misdiagnosed. Viral keratitis and allergic conjunctivitis are common misdiagnoses and demodicosis can be confirmed by simple epilation. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent long-term steroid use and its related complications.
  • Antimicrobial Evaluation of Latex and TLC Fractions from the Leaves of Aloe adigratana Reynolds. [Journal Article]
Evid Based Complement Alternat Med. 2020; 2020:8312471.Asmerom D, Hailu GS, … Kahsay G
  • CONCLUSIONS: The leaf latex and TLC fractions were found to be active against the tested bacterial and Candida species. Therefore, this finding supports the traditional claim of Aloe adigratana and the need for characterization of the TLC fractions to provide as lead compounds for further comprehensive antibacterial and antifungal activities.
  • Medium-chain fatty acid esters-Optimising their efficacy as anti-Malassezia agents. [Journal Article]
    Mycoses. 2020 Jul; 63(7):704-710.Koch C, Pesaro M, … Mayser P
  • CONCLUSIONS: The new substances are advantageous in terms of odour and substantivity and have also beneficial skin caring properties if not hydrolysed by M. spp. As a different panel of hydrolases of each single M. species is responsible for variation in efficacy among the test substances, tailored products to treat preferentially single species or blends with a broader effectivity can be designed. In vivo verification will be the next step for the successful development of this new therapeutical concept for M.-associated diseases.
  • Malassezia and Staphylococcus dominate scalp microbiome for seborrheic dermatitis. [Journal Article]
    Bioprocess Biosyst Eng. 2020 Mar 26 [Online ahead of print]Lin Q, Panchamukhi A, … Chen W
  • Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a common disease of the human scalp that causes physical damage and psychological problems for patients. Studies have indicated that dysbiosis of the scalp microbiome results in SD. However, the specific fungal and bacterial microbiome changes related to SD remain elusive. To further investigate the fungal and bacterial microbiome changes associated with SD, we recru…
  • Activation studies of the β-carbonic anhydrases from Malassezia restricta with amines and amino acids. [Journal Article]

  • Loss of centromere function drives karyotype evolution in closely related Malassezia species. [Journal Article]
    Elife. 2020 Jan 20; 9Sankaranarayanan SR, Ianiri G, … Sanyal K
  • Genomic rearrangements associated with speciation often result in variation in chromosome number among closely related species. Malassezia species show variable karyotypes ranging between six and nine chromosomes. Here, we experimentally identified all eight centromeres in M. sympodialis as 3-5-kb long kinetochore-bound regions that span an AT-rich core and are depleted of the canonical histone H…
  • Tinea Capitis: An Updated Review. [Journal Article]
Recent Pat Inflamm Allergy Drug Discov. 2020; 14(1):58-68.Leung AKC, Hon KL, … Lam JM
  • CONCLUSIONS: Tinea capitis requires systemic antifungal treatment. Although topical antifungal therapies have minimal adverse events, topical antifungal agents alone are not recommended for the treatment of tinea capitis because these agents do not penetrate the root of the hair follicles deep within the dermis. Topical antifungal therapy, however, can be used to reduce transmission of spores and can be used as adjuvant therapy to systemic antifungals. Combined therapy with topical and oral antifungals may increase the cure rate.
