  • Effects of Oral Antihistamines on Tear Volume, Tear Stability, and Intraocular Pressure. [Journal Article]
Vision (Basel). 2020 Jun 20; 4(2)Foutch BK, Sandberg KA, … Naeger LL
  • The goal of this study was to investigate the effects of two commonly used oral antihistamines-diphenhydramine and loratadine-on tear volume, tear breakup time, and intraocular pressure. Placebo, diphenhydramine, and loratadine were administered for one week to 33 subjects experimentally blind to the treatment given. All the subjects received all three treatments over a period of six weeks. The o…
  • A rare case of anaphylaxis to Indian jujube (Ziziphus Mauritiana Lam). [Case Reports]
    Allergy Asthma Clin Immunol. 2020; 16:48.Aberumand B, Borici-Mazi R
  • CONCLUSIONS: Anaphylaxis secondary to Indian jujube ingestion is an extremely rare phenomenon in patients without a latex allergy. A possible allergy to Indian jujube should be taken into consideration when working up anaphylaxis, especially in patient of Asian and Indian descent who have ceased regular consumption of the fruit.

. StatPearls Publishing: Treasure Island (FL) Huynh David A. DA Beaumont Hospital, Dearborn Abbas Malak M Beaumont Health Dabaja Ali A Beaumont Health BOOK
  • Diphenhydramine is a first-generation antihistamine with anticholinergic and sedative properties. It is most commonly used for the treatment of nausea, vomiting, allergic rhinitis, mild to severe allergic reactions (e.g., anaphylaxis), and as a mild sleep aid. While used for a wide array of medical indications, diphenhydramine is also one of the most commonly abused medications in the United Stat…
  • Magnetic Solid-Phase Extraction of Drugs and Pesticides from Human Plasma using COOH-mMWCNTs. [Journal Article]
    J Anal Toxicol. 2020 May 05 [Online ahead of print]Moon H, Park J, … Chung H
  • Carbon nanotubes (CNT) are useful for extracting chemical compounds due to their properties, such as surface area and the potential for chemical modification. Especially the formation of carbon nanotubes with carboxylic acid functional group makes them disperse in water-based samples and have strong interaction forces with cationizable analytes. Based on these features, carboxylic acid functional…
  • Mortality rate and prognostic factors for dogs with severe anaphylaxis: 67 cases (2016-2018). [Journal Article]
J Am Vet Med Assoc. 2020 May 15; 256(10):1137-1144.Smith MR, Wurlod VA, … Mitchell M
  • CONCLUSIONS: Despite the poor presenting clinical condition seen in dogs with severe anaphylaxis, the rate of survival with treatment was fairly high. Coagulopathy and the presence of peritoneal effusion were common findings in dogs with severe anaphylaxis. Serum phosphorus concentration ≥ 12.0 mmol/L, high PT value, concurrent increases of PT and PTT values > 50% above reference range limits, hypoglycemia within 6 hours after hospital admission, and the need for supplemental dextrose were associated with death.
  • 192 Eye've Seen Enough: Oculogyric Crisis in a 13 year old Male Treated for Comorbid ADHD and Psychosis After Stopping Lisdexamphetamine. [Journal Article]
CNS Spectr. 2020 Apr; 25(2):320-321.Myers CK, Kallinicos R, Lucas C
  • CONCLUSIONS: In this case the use of lisdexamphetamine and risperidone may have set up an environment where there was decreased endogenously made dopamine and up-regulation of postsynaptic dopamine receptors. Upon discontinuation of the lisdexamphetamine and acute use of additional atypical antipsychotics (olanzapine and quetiapine), the body experienced a hypodopaminergic state resulting in dystonic reactions that included an oculogyric crisis. This case is unique from previously reported cases by occurring with the use and discontinuation of lisdexamphetamine while most reported cases involved a derivative of methylphenidate as the stimulant. This report adds to the literature showing the importance of monitoring and being aware of potential medication interactions especially when treating for comorbid conditions. This is even more important to recognize after adding or removing either of these medications.Funding: no funding.
  • Drug-specific risk of severe QT prolongation following acute drug overdose. [Journal Article]
Clin Toxicol (Phila). 2020 Apr 07 [Online ahead of print]Campleman SL, Brent J, … Toxicology Investigators’ Consortium (ToxIC)
  • CONCLUSIONS: This large US cohort describes drug-specific risk of SQTP following acute drug overdose. Healthcare providers caring for acute drug overdoses from any of these implicated drugs should pay close attention to cardiac monitoring for occurrence of SQTP.
  • Percutaneous Absorption of Lorazepam, Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride, and Haloperidol from ABH Gel. [Journal Article]
    Int J Pharm Compd. 2020 Mar-Apr; 24(2):168-175.Dahal A, Neupane R, … Dudley R
  • The objective of this project was to study the percutaneous absorption of lorazepam, diphenhydramine hydrochloride, and haloperidol from a topical Pluronic lecithin organogel, also known as ABH gel, across the porcine ear skin and verify its suitability for topical application. ABH gel was prepared using lecithin in isopropyl palmitate solution (1:1) as an oil phase and 20% w/v Poloxamer 407 solu…
  • Successful desensitization of Pegvaliase (Palynziq®) in a patient with phenylketonuria. [Journal Article]
    Mol Genet Metab Rep. 2020 Jun; 23:100575.Patrawala M, Kuruvilla M, Li H
  • Pegvaliase (Palynziq®) was FDA approved in 2018 as an enzyme substitution therapy in patients with Phenylketonuria. However, various drug induced hypersensitivity adverse events (HAEs) have been reported. We present a case of Pegvaliase (Palynziq®) induced anaphylaxis and successful desensitization. A 13-step desensitization protocol was performed using three solution concentrations of Palynziq w…
