The administration of anabolic agents in farm animals to improve meat production has been prohibited in EU, due to the potential risks to human health. Meat quality was investigated to detect the effects of illegal administration of dexamethasone or prednisolone or 17β-estradiol on Charolais bulls. Three groups of 6 bulls were treated and 12 bulls were the control. Meat quality parameters were measured on live animals, carcasses and on samples of Longissimus thoracis and multivariate statistical data analysis was applied. In Charolais bulls, these parameters were affected by growth promoter administration and the multivariate canonical discriminant analysis was able to distinguish between treated and untreated animals mainly due to three electronic nose's parameters, 24 h carcass temperature and drip loss. Therefore, meat quality control and the multivariate analysis could be useful as a first screening to address targeted controls on farms suspected of illicit use of growth promoters.

The facilities and expertise required for primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI) of the infarct-related artery (IRA) in patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) are only available at a limited number of hospitals. Fibrinolytic therapy, on the other hand, is more widely deliverable. This creates two distinct reperfusion choices: PPCI or a pharmacoinvasive strategy. The first option relies on immediate transfer to the closest PPCI-capable centre even if it means bypassing a closer non-PPCI centre. The second option is the “drip and ship” strategy. It involves delivery of fibrinolytic therapy by a non-PPCI facility with rapid transfer to a PPCI-capable centre.

Nonbacterial thrombotic endocarditis (NBTE) associated with malignancy is rare; its infrequency and similarity to other diagnoses make it a significant diagnostic challenge. A 63-year-old woman on rivaroxaban for prior deep vein thrombosis presented with left upper extremity weakness and left facial droop with imaging demonstrating multiple strokes. Echocardiograms revealed mitral and aortic valve vegetations. The patient was switched to apixaban and started on vancomycin and ceftriaxone for presumed culture-negative endocarditis. Despite continuing apixaban, her hospital course was complicated by new acute embolic infarcts. Workup confirmed non-mucinous metastatic biliary adenocarcinoma. The patient was placed on a heparin drip then switched to low molecular weight heparin without further embolic events and was discharged to a rehabilitation facility in stable condition with plans for chemotherapy as an outpatient. These clinical, imaging, and histologic findings were consistent with a rare case of NBTE associated with primary non-mucinous gallbladder malignancy complicated by recurrent strokes in which direct oral anticoagulants did not provide adequate anticoagulation.

In this study, we evaluated the effects of exercise on the growth performance, carcass composition, meat quality, and mRNA expression profile of breast muscle in a Chinese indigenous chicken breed. Briefly, 300 female Huainan chickens (60-day-old) with similar BW were selected and raised in a free-range environment. Daily steps were counted by pedometer for all birds from 61 to 140 D of age. At 140 D of age, based on the average counts of steps per day, 15 birds with the highest number of steps (HS), 15 birds with a medium number of steps (MS), and 15 birds with low numbers of steps (LS) were selected for use in subsequent experiments. The HS group had heavier BW than the other two groups (P < 0.05). Compared with the LS group, the HS group displayed higher meat redness and lower shear force, drip loss, cooking loss values, and the percentage of breast muscle weight (P < 0.05). Moreover, a total of 150 differentially expressed genes were identified from the pectoralis major muscles of the HS and LS group. Therefore, enhanced exercise increased BW, improved meat quality by increasing WHC and decreasing shear force values, and decreased percentage of breast muscle weight but had no effect on others carcass parameters. Additionally, the differentially expressed genes in breast muscle between the HS and LS groups were mainly associated with skeletal muscle tissue development and meat quality traits.

Chronic wounds remain a significant burden to both the healthcare system and individual patients, indicating an urgent need for new interventions. Deferoxamine (DFO), an iron-chelating agent clinically used to treat iron toxicity, has been shown to reduce oxidative stress and increase hypoxia-inducible factor-1 alpha (HIF-1α) activation, thereby promoting neovascularization and enhancing regeneration in chronic wounds. However due to its short half-life and adverse side effects associated with systemic absorption, there is a pressing need for targeted DFO delivery. We recently published a preclinical proof of concept drug delivery system (TDDS) which showed that transdermally applied DFO is effective in improving chronic wound healing. Here we present an enhanced TDDS (eTDDS) comprised exclusively of FDA-compliant constituents to optimize drug release and expedite clinical translation. We evaluate the eTDDS to the original TDDS and compare this with other commonly used delivery methods including DFO drip-on and polymer spray applications. The eTDDS displayed excellent physicochemical characteristics and markedly improved DFO delivery into human skin when compared to other topical application techniques. We demonstrate an accelerated wound healing response with the eTDDS treatment resulting in significantly increased wound vascularity, dermal thickness, collagen deposition and tensile strength. Together, these findings highlight the immediate clinical potential of DFO eTDDS to treating diabetic wounds. Further, the topical drug delivery platform has important implications for targeted pharmacologic therapy of a wide range of cutaneous diseases.

The victim was a morbidly obese and bull-necked woman in her twenties. She had the disorders, due to Down's syndrome, including severe mental retardation, advanced hearing loss, congenital cataract surgery, and amblyopia at postoperative glaucoma. She was deeply sedated for rest with an intravenous drip infusion of 350 mg of thiopental (TP) for 5 minutes during an intraocular pressure examination with secondary glaucoma at a hospital. The examination was finished within 10 minutes after the TP injection, but her respiratory condition deteriorated rapidly when the doctor left the patient. Although immediate artificial respiration was carried out, she was declared dead about 20 hours after the examination. Medical malpractice was suspected for her death. At autopsy, no fatal disease or injury was observed in the victim. The serum TP level was 0.80 µg /ml. TP is an ultra-short-acting intravenous anesthetic, and usually only the smallest amount should be administered by frequent additions after pre-anesthesia administration while maintaining contact with patients. Although contact with patients with a disability can be difficult, it was diagnosed that the death was caused by both respiratory arrest due to a single dose of TP and delay in resuscitation due to the absence of a doctor.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary bamboo leaf extract (BLE) on growth performance, meat quality, oxidative stability, and nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) related gene expression of breast meat in broilers. A total of 576 one-day-old male Arbor Acres broilers were divided into 6 groups. The control group (CTR) was fed basal diet, while BLE1, BLE2, BLE3, BLE4, and BLE5 were fed basal diet supplemented with 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, and 5.0 g BLE per kg feed, respectively. Compared with the CTR group, BLE2 and BLE5 increased average daily feed intake from 1 to 21 D and 22 to 42 D (P < 0.05), BLE1 and BLE2 improved average daily gain (ADG) and feed to gain ratio from 22 to 42 D (P < 0.05). Throughout the trial period, the highest body weight and favorable ADG and feed to gain ratio were observed in the BLE2 group. The drip loss at 24 h and pH at 45 min postmortem of breast meat were linearly improved by BLE supplementation (P < 0.05). Shear force was significantly lower in BLE2 and BLE3 than that in CTR group. Increasing supplementation of BLE linearly improved free radical scavenging capacity and decreased malondialdehyde content of breast meat during 12 D of storage (P < 0.05). Total antioxidant capacity and glutathione peroxidase activity were linearly increased by BLE supplementation (P < 0.05). Compared with the CTR group, the mRNA expression of Nrf2 and glutathione peroxidase in BLE3, BLE4, and BLE5 groups was significantly promoted, and glutathione S-transferase gene expression was increased in BLE2, BLE4, and BLE5 (P < 0.05). The highest (P < 0.05) heme oxygennase-1 gene expression was observed in BLE5. In conclusion, broiler supplemented with BLE improved growth performance and meat quality, BLE supplementation might activate Nrf2 pathway to alleviate lipid oxidation and increase antioxidant capacity of breast meat. The dosage of 2.0 to 3.0 g/kg BLE in broiler diet was recommanded.
