  • Pseudopartial Third Nerve Palsy as the Presenting Sign of Ocular Myasthenia Gravis. [Journal Article]
Optom Vis Sci. 2020 May; 97(5):377-382.Bertolet AN, Druckenbrod RC
  • CONCLUSIONS: This case emphasizes the high degree of suspicion necessary for a timely diagnosis of myasthenia gravis.Myasthenia gravis commonly presents with ocular signs and symptoms. Because ocular myasthenia gravis can mimic other causes of diplopia, heightened awareness and suspicion are necessary to make a timely diagnosis.
  • Case Demonstrating the Nuances of Acute Cortical Venous Thrombosis Anticoagulation Guidelines. [Case Reports]
World Neurosurg. 2020 Apr 15; 139:215-218.Polster SP, Lyne SB, Mansour A
  • CONCLUSIONS: This case of CVT demonstrates the need for critically reading guidelines, as in this case the time to anticoagulation treatment was shorter than in cases included in guideline construction and repeated computed tomography examination demonstrated expansion suggesting it is unsuitable for immediate anticoagulation. Certain cases may fall outside of the study parameters on which guidelines are constructed, and clinicians should be aware of these exceptions.
  • Nanoplatelet-Based Light-Emitting Diode and Its Use in All-Nanocrystal LiFi-like Communication. [Journal Article]
    ACS Appl Mater Interfaces. 2020 May 13; 12(19):22058-22065.Qu J, Rastogi P, … Lhuillier E
  • Now that colloidal nanocrystals (NCs) have been integrated as green and red sources for liquid crystal displays, the next challenge for quantum dots is their use in electrically driven light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Among various colloidal NCs, nanoplatelets (NPLs) have appeared as promising candidates for light-emitting devices because their two-dimensional shape allows a narrow luminescence spec…
  • Lessons of the month 2: FAST is not always FAST. [Journal Article]
Clin Med (Lond). 2020 Mar; 20(2):219-220.Qureshi MI, Osman A
  • Thrombolytic treatment with tissue plasminogen activator is an established therapy for selected patients with ischaemic stroke within a narrow time window of 3 hours from the onset of symptoms. However, severe complications and poor outcomes are likely to ensue if a patient with acute aortic dissection is inadvertently treated with thrombolytic agents. We describe a patient presenting as facial dr…
  • A Case of the Forgotten Thyroid: The Sequelae of Chronic Untreated Hypothyroidism. [Case Reports]
    Cureus. 2019 Mar 12; 11(3):e4240.Weinstein M, Pasarica M
  • Hypothyroidism is a common endocrine disorder frequently caused by iodine deficiency, autoimmune disease, or as a result of certain medical treatments such as radioactive iodine. We report a 57-year-old woman 21 years pos-radioiodine ablation therapy for Graves' disease. She presented to the clinic after more than two decades without medical care with a variety of symptoms, including a left-sided…
  • Identifying Gaps and Missed Opportunities for Intravenous Thrombolytic Treatment of Inpatient Stroke. [Journal Article]
    Front Neurol. 2020; 11:134.Topiwala K, Tarasaria K, … Nouh A
  • Background: Inpatient stroke-codes (ISC) have traditionally seen low treatment rates with IV-thrombolytic (IVT). The purpose of this study was to identify the predictors of true stroke, prevalent IVT-treatment gap and study the factors associated with such missed treatment opportunities (MTO). Methods: A retrospective chart review identified ISC from March 2017 to March 2018. Clinical, radiogra…
  • Mechanical basis for thermonastic movements of cold-hardy Rhododendron leaves. [Journal Article]
    J R Soc Interface. 2020 Mar; 17(164):20190751.Wang H, Nilsen ET, Upmanyu M
  • The profusion of rhododendrons in cold climates is as remarkable as the beauty of their blooms. The cold-hardiness of some of the montane species is in part due to reversible leaf movements triggered under frigid conditions wherein the leaves droop at the leaf stalks (petioles) and their margins roll up around the midrib. We probe the mechanics of these movements using leaf dissection studies tha…
  • High performance electron blocking layer-free InGaN/GaN nanowire white-light-emitting diodes. [Journal Article]
    Opt Express. 2020 Jan 06; 28(1):665-675.Jain B, Velpula RT, … Nguyen HPT
  • We investigated the effect of coupled quantum wells to reduce electron overflow in InGaN/GaN dot-in-a-wire phosphor-free white color light-emitting diodes (white LEDs) and to improve the device performance. The light output power and external quantum efficiency (EQE) of the white LEDs with coupled quantum wells were increased and indicated that the efficiency droop was reduced. The improved outpu…
  • Acute Rheumatic Fever: A Disease of the Past? [Case Reports]
Case Rep Infect Dis. 2020; 2020:1470697.Myette RL
  • Introduction. Acute rheumatic fever (ARF) is a manifestation of the nonsuppurative sequelae of Streptococcus pyogenes infection. Herein, two cases of ARF are presented to highlight that this disease is present in urban cities, can be diagnosed in otherwise healthy children, and that its diagnosis may be challenging, or marred with confounders, leading to delays in diagnosis. Case Report. Two unre…
