  • IL28B Genetic Variations in Patients with Recurrent Herpes Simplex Keratitis. [Journal Article]
    Medicina (Kaunas) 2019; 55(10)Borivoje S, Svetlana S, … Srbislav P
  • CONCLUSIONS: Seropositive individuals with a history of recurrent HSK are likely to have the CC IL28B genotype. This genotype may be related to incomplete control of the infection and more frequent periodical viral shedding along the first nerve branch of the trigeminal ganglion, which clinically manifests as recurrent herpes keratitis. The clinical manifestation of recurrent HSV-1 infection seems to be influenced by polymorphism of the IL28B genotype.
  • Doxycycline: An option in the treatment of ulcerated oral lesions? [Review]
    J Clin Pharm Ther 2019Piacentini M, Borghetti RL, … Gonçalves Salum F
  • CONCLUSIONS: According to the inclusion criteria, five articles were selected. In four of these studies, doxycycline was used in the treatment of aphthous stomatitis, and in one study, it was used in the treatment of herpes labialis. In all studies, the drug was used topically, both as a hydrogel and as a crushed tablet (along with a prosthetic adhesive). The groups treated with doxycycline showed faster healing of lesions and lower pain scores compared to placebo. The present study suggests that topical doxycycline has a positive effect on the treatment of recurrent aphthous ulceration and herpes labialis. Experimental animal studies and double-blind randomized clinical trials should be performed on other oral lesions, such as traumatic ulcers and mucositis.
  • Toll-like receptors as novel therapeutic targets for herpes simplex virus infection. [Review]
    Rev Med Virol 2019; 29(4):e2048Jahanban-Esfahlan R, Seidi K, … Shirooie S
  • Seropositivity for HSV reaches more than 70% within the world population, and yet no approved vaccine exists. While HSV1 is responsible for keratitis, encephalitis, and labialis, HSV2 carriers have a high susceptibility to other STD infections, such as HIV. Induction of antiviral innate immune responses upon infection depends on a family of pattern recognition receptors called Toll-like receptors…
  • Properties of fucoidans beneficial to oral healthcare. [Journal Article]
    Odontology 2019Oka S, Okabe M, … Imai A
  • Fucoidans are sulfated polysaccharides that are found in marine algae and have many useful activities, including antitumor effects, promotion of apoptosis of cancer cells, and antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and antiallergic actions. In oral medicine, several case reports have shown that fucoidan-containing creams and tablets markedly improved recurrent aphthous stomatitis, symptomatic inflamed ton…
  • Vitamin D Levels in Patients with Recurrent Herpes Labialis. [Journal Article]
    Viral Immunol 2019 Jul/Aug; 32(6):258-262Öztekin A, Öztekin C
  • Recurrent infections of herpes simplex virus in the orolabial area are known as recurrent herpes labialis (RHL). Vitamin D has been shown to have an important immunomodulatory role and to be associated with several infectious diseases. This hospital-based case-control study aimed at investigating the association between vitamin D and RHL by comparing vitamin D levels in individuals with and witho…
  • Corneal Sub-Basal Nerve Changes in Patients with Herpetic Keratitis During Acute Phase and after 6 Months. [Journal Article]
    Medicina (Kaunas) 2019; 55(5)Danileviciene V, Zemaitiene R, … Zaliuniene D
  • CONCLUSIONS: Corneal sensitivity and sub-basal nerve changes in HSV-affected eyes revealed a significant decrease compared with contralateral eyes, and with the eyes of patients with a previous history of herpes labialis, and of healthy controls. Following six months, corneal sensitivity and sub-basal nerve parameters increased; however, they did not reach the parameters of contralateral eyes and the eyes of healthy controls. The best recovery of corneal sensitivity was seen in patients with epithelial keratitis. Herpes labialis was not a risk factor for herpetic eye disease.
