  • Body Composition Analysis of Computed Tomography Scans in Clinical Populations: The Role of Deep Learning. [Review]
    Lifestyle Genom 2019; :1-4Paris MT
  • CONCLUSIONS: Advances in deep learning have demonstrated excellent success in biomedical image analysis. Several recent publications have demonstrated excellent accuracy in comparison to human raters for the measurement of skeletal muscle, visceral adipose, and subcutaneous adipose tissue from the lumbar vertebrae region, indicating that analysis of body composition may be successfully automated using deep neural networks. Key Messages: The high accuracy and drastically improved speed of CT body composition analysis (<1 s/scan for neural networks vs. 15 min/scan for human analysis) suggest that neural networks may aid researchers and clinicians in better understanding the role of body composition in clinical populations by enabling cost-effective, large-scale research studies. As the role of body composition in clinical settings and the field of automated analysis advance, it will be critical to examine how clinicians interact with these systems and to evaluate whether these technologies are beneficial in improving treatment and health outcomes for patients.
  • Electro-magneto flow of nanomaterial with irreversibility. [Journal Article]
Comput Methods Programs Biomed 2019; 187:105255Ijaz Khan M, Khan SA, … Alsaedi A
  • Here we discuss the analysis of irreversibility in electrical magnetohydrodynamic convective flow of nanomaterials over a stretchable surface. Energy equation deliberated through Joule heating, dissipation and heat source/sink. Furthermore features chemical reaction is also considered. Total entropy optimization is calculated. Salient features of thermophoresis effect and random motion of particl…
  • A Bayesian approach for the analysis of error rate studies in forensic science. [Journal Article]
Forensic Sci Int 2019; 306:110047Hendricks JH, Neumann C
  • Over the past decade, the field of forensic science has received recommendations from the National Research Council of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology, and the U.S. President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology to study the validity and reliability of forensic analyses. More specifically, these committees recommend estimat…
  • Gender differences between Male and Female Neurosurgeons: Is there equality for all? [Journal Article]
World Neurosurg 2019Gadjradj PS, Matawlie RHS, … Vleggeert-Lankamp CLAM
  • CONCLUSIONS: Despite efforts to increase the amount of women enrolling into neurosurgery and despite efforts to strive for equality, the results of the current study show gender disparities in the professional and private careers among neurosurgeons. Practice patterns did not differ between male and female neurosurgeons, but perceptions on career and characteristics of the private life did. Program directors and chairs should focus on measurements to decrease gender differences and to strive for equal career satisfaction among female and male neurosurgeons.
  • Deep learning segmentation of orbital fat to calibrate conventional MRI for longitudinal studies. [Journal Article]
Neuroimage 2019; :116442Brown RA, Fetco D, … Canadian Pediatric Demyelinating Disease Network
  • In conventional non-quantitative magnetic resonance imaging, image contrast is consistent within images, but absolute intensity can vary arbitrarily between scans. For quantitative analysis of intensity data, images are typically normalized to a consistent reference. The most convenient reference is a tissue that is always present in the image, and is unlikely to be affected by pathological proce…
  • Current use and development of fish vaccines in China. [Journal Article]
    Fish Shellfish Immunol 2019Wang Q, Ji W, Xu Z
  • In the past decades, the aquaculture industry made great progress in China, which contributes more than 70% yield of the world's farmed fish. Along with the rapid growth of fish production, increased emergence and outbreak of numbers of diseases pose harm to the aquaculture industry and food safety. From the efficient, safe, environmental and ethical aspects, vaccines is definitely the most appro…
  • Long-term culturing of porcine nodose ganglia. [Journal Article]
J Neurosci Methods 2019; :108546Kuan SP, Atanasova KR, … Reznikov LR
  • CONCLUSIONS: The simple procedure we developed for culturing nodose ganglia will enable both short-term and long-term investigations aimed at understanding peripheral ganglia in vitro. It is also possible that the methods described herein can be applied to other models, different developmental stages, and potentially other neural tissues.
