  • Study on the Self-Organization of an Fe-Mn-C-B Coating during Friction with Surface-Active Lubricant. [Journal Article]
    Materials (Basel). 2020 Jul 06; 13(13)Barszcz M, Pashechko M, … Jozwik J
  • This paper investigates the friction process between an Fe-based coating and C45 steel with surface-active lubrication, as well as examines the coating surface before and after tribological testing. As a result, it is possible to determine whether the surface undergoes self-organization during friction. Coatings were produced by hardfacing a subeutectic alloy Fe-Mn-C-B modified by silicon, nickel…

    Materials (Basel). 2020 Jun 25; 13(12)Lv X, Liu Z, … Zhang Z
  • Achieving a good match between strength and conductivity is a challenge of the development of the high-performance Cu-Cr-Nb alloy for aerospace and fusion energy. The effect of heat treatment on Cr2Nb phase, strength and conductivity of spark plasma sintered (SPSed) Cu-2Cr-1Nb (at%) alloy was investigated. The results illustrated that Cr2Nb phase of Cu-2Cr-1Nb alloy can be regulated by heat treat…
  • Connecting Coil-to-Globule Transitions to Full Phase Diagrams for Intrinsically Disordered Proteins. [Journal Article]
Biophys J. 2020 Jun 23 [Online ahead of print]Zeng X, Holehouse AS, … Pappu RV
  • Phase separation is thought to underlie spatial and temporal organization that is required for controlling biochemical reactions in cells. Multivalence of interaction motifs, also known as stickers, is a defining feature of proteins that drive phase separation. Intrinsically disordered proteins with stickers uniformly distributed along the linear sequence can serve as scaffold molecules that driv…
  • Autoimmune/inflammatory syndrome induced by methylmethacrylate associated to seronegative antiphospholipid syndrome and diffuse large B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. [Journal Article]
    Lupus. 2020 Jun 30 [Online ahead of print]Vera-Lastra O, Rojas-Milán E, … Jara LJ
  • CONCLUSIONS: A 40-year-old man with a prior history of methylmethacrylate injection in the buttocks for aesthetic purposes 8 years ago, presented with deep venous thrombosis in the left leg 6 months ago, accompanied with inflammation, hardening, changes in colour, ulceration in the buttocks, arthritis, myalgias and fever. Weak and moderate lupus anticoagulant and low levels of anticardiolipin antibodies were present. Thoracoabdominal tomography showed hepatosplenomegaly and a pulmonary nodule, the biopsy of which showed chronic granulomatous inflammation. After a month, a new chest tomography showed multiple nodular pulmonary lesions. The new pulmonary biopsy showed a diffuse large B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma which was treated with cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, prednisone, and rituximab for four cycles, with good response of the autoimmune/inflammatory syndrome, but partial response of the diffuse large B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. We describe the first case of seronegative antiphospholipid syndrome and lymphoma associated with methylmethacrylate in a patient with autoimmune/inflammatory syndrome.
  • Modelling changes in modular taper micromechanics due to surgeon assembly technique in total hip arthroplasty. [Journal Article]
    Bone Joint J. 2020 Jul; 102-B(7_Supple_B):33-40.Gustafson JA, Pourzal R, … Lundberg HJ
  • CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest additional assembly hits at low loads lead to inferior taper interlock strength compared with one firm hit, which may be influenced by loading rate or material strain hardening. These unique models can estimate microgroove deformations representative of real contact mechanics seen on retrievals, which will enable us to better understand how both surgeon assembly techniques and implant design affect taper interlock strength. • Alternative to Nitric Acid Passivation of 15-5 and 17-4PH Stainless Steel Using Electrochemical Techniques. [Journal Article]
    Materials (Basel). 2020 Jun 24; 13(12)Lara-Banda M, Gaona-Tiburcio C, … Almeraya-Calderón F
  • Increasingly stringent environmental regulations in different sectors of industry, especially the aeronautical sector, suggest the need for more investigations regarding the effect of environmentally friendly corrosion protective processes. Passivation is a finishing process that makes stainless steels more rust resistant, removing free iron from the steel surface resulting from machining operati…
  • Snoek-type damping performance in strong and ductile high-entropy alloys. [Journal Article]
    Sci Adv. 2020 Jun; 6(25):eaba7802.Lei Z, Wu Y, … Lu Z
  • Noise and mechanical vibrations not only cause damage to devices, but also present major public health hazards. High-damping alloys that eliminate noise and mechanical vibrations are therefore required. Yet, low operating temperatures and insufficient strength/ductility ratios in currently available high-damping alloys limit their applicability. Using the concept of high-entropy alloy (HEA), we p…
  • On the Post-Printing Heat Treatment of a Wire Arc Additively Manufactured ER70S Part. [Journal Article]
    Materials (Basel). 2020 Jun 21; 13(12)Vahedi Nemani A, Ghaffari M, Nasiri A
  • Wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is known to induce a considerable microstructural inhomogeneity and anisotropy in mechanical properties, which can potentially be minimized by adopting appropriate post-printing heat treatment. In this paper, the effects of two heat treatment cycles, including hardening and normalizing on the microstructure and mechanical properties of a WAAM-fabricated low-…
  • A new magnesium sheet alloy with high tensile properties and room-temperature formability. [Journal Article]
    Sci Rep. 2020 Jun 22; 10(1):10044.Shi R, Miao J, … Luo AA
  • Lightweight sheet alloys with superior mechanical performance such as high strength, ductility and formability at room temperature (RT) are desirable for high volume automotive applications. However, ductility or formability of metallic alloys at RT are generally inversely related to strength, thereby making it difficult to optimize all three simultaneously. Here we design a new magnesium sheet a…
  • Hierarchically structured diamond composite with exceptional toughness. [Journal Article]
    Nature. 2020 Jun; 582(7812):370-374.Yue Y, Gao Y, … Tian Y
  • The well known trade-off between hardness and toughness (resistance to fracture) makes simultaneous improvement of both properties challenging, especially in diamond. The hardness of diamond can be increased through nanostructuring strategies1,2, among which the formation of high-density nanoscale twins - crystalline regions related by symmetry - also toughens diamond2. In materials other than di…
  • Resolving acceleration to very high energies along the jet of Centaurus A. [Journal Article]
    Nature. 2020 06; 582(7812):356-359.H.E.S.S. Collaboration
  • The nearby radio galaxy Centaurus A belongs to a class of active galaxies that are luminous at radio wavelengths. Most show collimated relativistic outflows known as jets, which extend over hundreds of thousands of parsecs for the most powerful sources. Accretion of matter onto the central supermassive black hole is believed to fuel these jets and power their emission1. Synchrotron radiation from…
