  • Biocides and Novel Antimicrobial Agents for the Mitigation of Coronaviruses. [Review]
    Front Microbiol. 2020; 11:1351.Dev Kumar G, Mishra A, … Gerba CP
  • In December, 2019, a highly infectious and rapidly spreading new pneumonia of unknown cause was reported to the Chinese WHO Country Office. A cluster of these cases had appeared in Wuhan, a city in the Hubei Province of China. These infections were found to be caused by a new coronavirus which was given the name "2019 novel coronavirus" (2019-nCoV). It was later renamed "severe acute respiratory …
  • The outcome for feline non-hypersecretory thyroid carcinoma after thyroidectomy. [Case Reports]
    Can Vet J. 2020 Jul; 61(7):719-723.Oramas A, Boston S, Wavreille V
  • A 14-year-old neutered male cat was presented because of a left ventral cervical mass. Based on imaging, the mass was suspected to have a thyroid origin. There was no evidence of gross metastatic disease or hyperthyroidism. Left thyroidectomy alone was the treatment for this patient and a thyroid carcinoma was diagnosed on histopathology. At last follow-up, 831 days after surgery, there was suspi…
  • A review of iodine-based compounds, with a focus on biofilms: results of an expert panel. [Journal Article]
J Wound Care. 2020 Jul 01; 29(Sup7):S38-S43.Wolcott RD, Cook RG, … Hermans MH
  • Biofilms play a central role in the chronicity of non-healing lesions such as venous leg ulcers and diabetic foot ulcers. Therefore, biofilm management and treatment is now considered an essential part of wound care. Many antimicrobial treatments, whether topical or systemic, have been shown to have limited efficacy in the treatment of biofilm phenotypes. The antimicrobial properties of iodine co…
  • One-Pot Synthesis of 2,4-Diacyl Thiophenes from α-Oxo Ketene Dithioacetals and Propargylic Alcohols. [Journal Article]
J Org Chem. 2020 Jul 13 [Online ahead of print]Jian X, Bai LG, … Luo QL
  • Although thiophenes having various functionalities are the basic structural units in numerous bioactive compounds and optoelectronic materials, synthetic routes to acylated thiophenes from aliphatic sulfur-containing starting materials are still rare. In particular, there have been no reports concerning the straightforward synthesis of 2,4-diacylthiophenes from alkynes. Herein, we describe a high…
  • Prevalence of Inadequate and Excessive Iodine Intake in a US Pregnancy Cohort. [Journal Article]
Am J Obstet Gynecol. 2020 Jul 09 [Online ahead of print]Kerver JM, Pearce EN, … Paneth N
  • CONCLUSIONS: Median urinary iodine concentrations in each trimester were above the World Health Organization cut-off of 150 μg/L indicating iodine sufficiency at the group level across pregnancy. However, the estimated prevalence of inadequate iodine intake was substantial at 23%, while prevalence of excessive intake was <1%, indicating a need for at least some women to increase consumption of iodine during pregnancy. The American Thyroid Association, the Endocrine Society, and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend that all pregnant and lactating women receive a daily multivitamin/mineral supplement that contains 150 μg of iodine. The data presented here should encourage the collection of similar data from additional US population samples for the purpose of informing the American Council of Obstetrics and Gynecology's own potential recommendations for prenatal iodine supplementation.

  • The radioactive iodine uptake (RAIU) test is used to quantitate the overall metabolism and kinetics of iodine in the thyroid gland by measuring how much orally ingested iodide is concentrated in the thyroid gland. Iodine-123 (I-123) is the most commonly used isotope for RAIU. Iodine is essential for metabolism as it is required for the intrathyroidal synthesis of triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxi…

  • To maintain the physiological requirements of the body, it is essential to take a sufficient amount of micro and macronutrients; however, the overconsumption of micronutrients and macronutrients can also be harmful. As defined by the World Health Organization (WHO), malnutrition is an ‘inadequate or excess intake of protein, energy, and micronutrients such as vitamins, and the frequent infections…

  • Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) encompasses several imaging techniques based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) developed for studying the arterial and venous systems. The benefits of an MRA in comparison to traditional angiography is that it is noninvasive, it lacks ionizing radiation exposure, it has the potential for a non-contrast examination, and it has the ability of high-resolution v…
