  • T Cell Activation Depends on Extracellular Alanine. [Journal Article]
Cell Rep 2019; 28(12):3011-3021.e4Ron-Harel N, Ghergurovich JM, … Haigis MC
  • T cell stimulation is metabolically demanding. To exit quiescence, T cells rely on environmental nutrients, including glucose and the amino acids glutamine, leucine, serine, and arginine. The expression of transporters for these nutrients is tightly regulated and required for T cell activation. In contrast to these amino acids, which are essential or require multi-step biosynthesis, alanine can b…
  • Metal Doping of Au25(SR)18- Clusters: Insights and Hindsights. [Journal Article]
    J Am Chem Soc 2019Fei W, Antonello S, … Maran F
  • The structure, properties, and applications of atomically precise gold nanoclusters are the object of active research worldwide. Over the last few years, research has been also focusing on selective doping of metal nanoclusters through introduction of foreign-metal atoms. Doping has been studied for several clusters, especially the atomically precise Au25(SR)18. Doping has been carried out with n…
  • Comparative LC-MS/MS and HPLC-UV Analyses of Meropenem and Piperacillin in Critically Ill Patients. [Journal Article]
    Clin Lab 2019; 65(9)Paal M, Heilmann M, … Vogeser M
  • CONCLUSIONS: After correction of the analytical bias for piperacillin measurements, both methods showed comparable results, also with respect to clinical decision limits. HPLC-UV analysis is an adequate TDM methodology for testing of beta-lactam antibiotics in centers where no special knowledge in LC-MS/MS based TDM is present. However, potential matrix effects, interferences, and calibration issues for both methods must be taken into account.
  • Sargassum blooms in the Caribbean alter the trophic structure of the sea urchin Diadema antillarum. [Journal Article]
    PeerJ 2019; 7:e7589Cabanillas-Terán N, Hernández-Arana HA, … Sanchez-Gonzalez A
  • The arrival of large masses of drifting Sargassum since 2011 has caused changes in the natural dynamics of Caribbean coastal ecosystems. In the summer of 2015, unprecedented and massive mats of S. fluitans and S. natans have been observed throughout the Mexican Caribbean including exceptional accumulations ashore. This study uses stable isotopes to assess the impact of Sargassum blooms on the tro…
  • Determination of Dietary Amino Acid Digestibility in Humans. [Journal Article]
J Nutr 2019Moughan PJ, Wolfe RR
  • Dietary amino acid digestibility is a fundamental measure of importance in protein quality evaluation. Determining amino acid digestibility in humans, as the disappearance of an amino acid across the total digestive tract, has been discredited. Extensive cecal and colonic microbial metabolism renders fecal estimates of amino acids misleading. True ileal amino acid digestibility determined at the …
  • Dual role of N-acetyl-aspartyl-glutamate metabolism in cancer monitor and therapy. [Journal Article]
    Mol Cell Oncol 2019; 6(5):e1627273Asaka R, Le A
  • We uncovered the neurotransmitter N-acetyl-aspartyl-glutamate (NAAG) as a reservoir providing glutamate to promote cancer growth, and demonstrated that inhibition of NAAG hydrolysis by targeting glutamate carboxypeptidase II is a viable strategy for cancer therapy. Our study also suggests that NAAG concentration in plasma could be a non-invasive measurement to monitor cancer progression.
  • Sulphur isotopes of alkaline magmas unlock long-term records of crustal recycling on Earth. [Journal Article]
Nat Commun 2019; 10(1):4208Hutchison W, Babiel RJ, … Horsburgh NJ
  • Earth's surface and mantle sulphur reservoirs are connected via subduction, crustal recycling and volcanism. Although oceanic hotspot lavas currently provide the best constraints on the deep sulphur cycle, their restricted age range (<200 Ma) means they cannot reveal temporal variations in crustal recycling over Earth history. Sulphur-rich alkaline magmas offer the solution because they are assoc…
  • Therapy of Patients with Neuroendocrine Neoplasia-Evidence-Based Approaches and New Horizons. [Review]
    J Clin Med 2019; 8(9)Bundschuh RA, Habacha B, … Essler M
  • Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) show low but increasing incidence and originate in multiple organs, including the pancreas, midgut, caecum, rectum, appendix, colon, and lungs. Due to their stunning genetic, histological, and clinical variability, diagnosis and treatment of NETs are challenging. In addition, low incidence and high variability hamper the implementation of high evidence trials. Therefo…
