JAMA Dermatol. 2020 Jul 08 [Online ahead of print]Secrest AM, Hopkins ZH, … Dermatology PRO Consortium
  • CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this case series suggest that patients receiving isotretinoin treatment achieve greater than a 50% improvement in quality of life by month 2 and can expect approximately 4-fold to 5-fold improvements from baseline with a full course of isotretinoin. This study shows the potential of routine administration of quality of life measures to assess patient care in dermatology.

  • FASCE, the benefit of spironolactone for treating acne in women: study protocol for a randomized double-blind trial. [Journal Article]
    Trials. 2020 Jun 25; 21(1):571.Poinas A, Lemoigne M, … Dréno B
  • CONCLUSIONS: The treatment frequently used in female acne is systemic antibiotics with many courses, as it is a chronic inflammatory disease. In the context of the recent World Health Organisation (WHO) revelation about the serious, worldwide threat to public health of antibiotic resistance, this trial could give the physician another alternative in the treatment of adult female acne instead of using isotretinoin, which is more complex to manage.

    Am J Otolaryngol. 2020 Jun 02; 41(5):102579.Kocak E, Bozdemir K, … Dikicier BS
  • CONCLUSIONS: Although the studies demonstrating the effect of ISO on cochlea and symptoms occurring during treatment such as nausea, vomiting and vertigo suggest that it may exert effects on peripheral vestibular system, the present study indicates that it has no short terms effects on structures in peripheral vestibular system and vestibuloocular reflex pathways.

  • Erosive pustular dermatosis of the scalp is a rare condition which primarily affects older women after local trauma and has historically been treated with topical steroids. Identifying the causes and evaluating the efficacy of treatments of erosive pustular dermatosis of the scalp (EPDS) is of great…

  • The Potential Uses of Omega-3 Fatty Acids in Dermatology: A Review. [Journal Article]
J Cutan Med Surg. 2020 May 28 [Online ahead of print]Thomsen BJ, Chow EY, Sapijaszko MJ

Given its high safety profile, low cost, and ease of supplementation, O3FA is a reasonable supplement that may benefit patients wishing to improve inflammatory skin conditions through diet. Areas of particular clinical interest where supplementation may be valuable include O3FAs for systemic UV photoprotection, as well as adjuvant treatment for acne to reduce both inflammatory lesion count and the severity of mucocutaneous side effects associated with isotretinoin use.
