We explored the potential clinical value of material separation enabled by dual-energy spectral computed tomography in detecting left atrial appendage thrombi. The study enrolled 24 patients who were scheduled to undergo atrial fibrillation ablation (12 with and 12 without left atrial appendage thrombi). Computed tomograms were acquired in gemstone spectral imaging mode; the densities in the regions of the left atrial appendage cavities, pectinate muscles, and left atrial appendage thrombi were analyzed on monochromatic 70-keV images. Iodine and blood were chosen as the material basis pair; the iodine and blood densities were observed and quantitatively determined from the iodine- and blood-specific material decomposition images. On the 70-keV monochromatic and iodine-specific images, the left atrial appendage pectinate muscles and thrombi appeared as areas of hypodense attenuation. On the blood-specific images, similar areas of high attenuation were observed in the thrombi and cavities, whereas lower attenuation was noticed in the pectinate muscles. The quantitative iodine and blood densities in the pectinate muscles were lower than those in the cavities (P <0.001). The iodine densities in the thrombi were lower than those in the cavities (P <0.001); however, blood densities did not differ significantly between the thrombi and cavities (P=0.192). Compared with the pectinate muscles, the thrombi showed lower blood-density differences (P=0.003) and higher iodine-density differences (P=0.006) in relation to the cavities. Spectral computed tomography-enabled material separation is a novel method for differentiating left atrial appendage thrombi from pectinate muscles. The potential applications of this technology warrant further studies.

- CONCLUSIONS: We presented the challenges and the original findings from a case of congenital anterior megalophthalmos with white cataract who underwent phacoemulsification and IOL implantation. This is the first report describing the comparison of the different IOL power calculation formulas in anterior megalophthalmos. Compared to the SRK/T and the Holladay II formulas, the Haigis formula could be a more accurate choice for the IOL calculation in anterior megalophthalmos according to our case. Moreover, the deliberate selection of IOLs is essential for IOL stability in these patients.

- CONCLUSIONS: This study confirms the association of the OLFML3 variant with PLA and PCAG in Border Collies from the United Kingdom. DNA testing for the variant and selective breeding can reasonably be expected to result in a reduction of PLA and PCAG prevalence in the breed.

The present report describes a case of a post-traumatic ocular leiomyosarcoma in a calf (Bos primigenius taurus) including clinical, histopathological and immunohistochemical features. Following a traumatic episode, the animal developed opacification of the lens and shrinkage of the eye. Subsequently, the ocular lesion increased in size over a period of 6 weeks and reached up to 16 cm in diameter with infiltration into the cranium. At necropsy examination, the kidneys, liver and spleen exhibited multiple firm white metastases up to 2 cm in diameter. The mass was composed of closely-packed streams and bundles of neoplastic cells, which immunohistochemically expressed vimentin and alpha smooth muscle actin. Based on the anamnestic data, morphological appearance, distribution and immunohistochemical results, a diagnosis of a post-traumatic intraocular leiomyosarcoma was made. The tumour may have originated from cells lining the pectinate ligament of the ciliary body.

Three species of the genus Prosopistoma Latreille, 1833 (Prosopistomatidae) are currently reported from Thailand. A new species, Prosopistomacarinatum sp. n., is described here based on specimens from western and southern Thailand. The new species can be easily distinguished from the other members of Prosopistoma by the following combination of characteristics: (i) the presence of two ridged longitudinal lines on each side of its carapace, (ii) antenna 7-segmented, (iii) a strongly convex carapace and (iv) nine pectinate setae on the ventral margin of the fore tibiae. A comparison between the key characteristics of P.carinatum sp. n. and the known Thai species is provided. Results of analysis of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene (658 bp) of three species, as well as the distribution of the Thai species, are also discussed.

- CONCLUSIONS: To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of PACG with goniodysgenesis in a Beagle supported by clinical, genetic, and histopathologic data. It highlights the importance of gonioscopy in Beagles with glaucoma. Further studies with a larger number of dogs are warranted to characterize clinical manifestations and inheritance of PACG in this breed.

Diet breadth and the degree of capital breeding have been established as major determinants of species-specific ecology of herbivorous insects. Both of these variables are related to resource foraging and therefore can be expected to have effects on sensory capacity. However, such effects have remained poorly studied, let alone in phylogenetically explicit multi-species comparisons. We contribute to filling this gap in a study of 60 species of geometrid moths (Lepidoptera: Geometridae), using adult head measures (eye size, antennal length and shape, forehead width) as indices of sensory capacity. When controlled for body size, eyes of the more capital breeding species (i.e. those with low contribution of adult feeding to reproduction) were found to be smaller, and female antennae shorter, than in income breeders. Feathery (vs simple filiform) male antennae were more frequently present in the capital breeders and in larger species. Regarding diet breadth, generalist species were found to have relatively wider male foreheads than specialists. The results suggest that (a) breeding strategy rather than diet breadth predicts sensory capacity in geometrids, (b) capital breeding (vs income breeding) is related to low sensory capacity in females, and (c) in contrast, males of the capital breeding species have evolved towards elevated olfactory capacity.

Barona arcuata, n.gen et n.sp., a left forewing of a relatively large cockroach of the Order Blattaria, is described from mesosaur-bearing lagoonal shales of the Mangrullo Formation (north-eastern Uruguay). While most of the insect remains recovered from the Mangrullo Formation come from sandy limestones, associated to scarce isolated mesosaur bones and pygocephalomorph crustaceans, the cockroach wing here described was found in the overlaying green to brownish, gray and dark black shales associated to intercalated bentonites and evaporitic gypsum crystals. Barona arcuata shares some features with typical Late Carboniferous taxa such as its general venation pattern and outline of the wing, four main and powerful veins arising close together from near the base of the wing, Sc simple forked, pectinate, reaching the costal border through a long fork, R and M bifurcating and terminating in the wing margin above and below the apex respectively, short and narrow CuA, and the presence of a broad interspace between CuP and AA. Cross venation seems to be absent or it was not preserved. Some characters might relate Barona arcuata to the Late Carboniferous-Early Permian Neothroblattinidae such as the presence of sigmoidal veins in the anal area, a condition not found in any of the remaining representatives of the Palaeozoic Blattaria. Intriguingly, the Uruguayan blattarian also presents a strong similarity with Qilianiblatta namurensis Zhang, Schneider & Hong, 2012 from the Westphalian of China, clearly a smaller taxon that is also difficult to relate to any of the preexistent families. The apparent plesiomorphic venation pattern of the new species which is reminiscent of that present in the oldest known blattarians, is in agreement with a Permo-Carboniferous (Gzhelian-Asselian) age for the Mangrullo Formation also supported by the presence of a macrofloral assemblage dominated by arborescent lepidondendrids and other lycopsids and the pygocephalid-like morphology of the pygocephalomorph crustaceans from the same levels.
