  • Omental Flap for Bronchopleural Fistula After Pneumonectomy and Aorta Replacement. [Case Reports]
    Ann Thorac Surg. 2020 05; 109(5):e349-e351.Uchibori A, Okada S, … Inoue M
  • Bronchopleural fistula (BPF) is a fatal complication after lung cancer surgery. We report the case of a 56-year-old man treated with omental flap for BPF after pneumonectomy along with descending aorta replacement. He underwent left pneumonectomy with combined resection of the descending aorta, followed by replacement with prosthetic graft after the diagnosis of lung cancer, cT4 N1 M0 stage IIIA.…
  • [Fenestration, Pedicle Muscle Flap, and Omental Plombage for Pyothorax]. [Journal Article]
    Kyobu Geka. 2019 Sep; 72(10):854-858.Higuchi M, Suzuki H
  • We sometimes encounter patients with chronic empyema of their thoracic cavity with or without air leakage. These patients suffer from mental and physical problems because of restrictions in daily life and long-term treatment. Pyothorax is divided into acute or chronic empyema. The former is treated by thoracic drainage or debridement under video-assisted thoracic surgery, while the latter is trea…
  • [Paraffinoma with Spinal Paralysis 40 Years After Pleural Plombage for Tuberculosis]. [Case Reports]
    Kyobu Geka. 2019 May; 72(5):344-347.Arai W, Ohkawa M, … Watanabe A
  • Paraffin had been used for pleural plombage in the treatment of tuberculosis. However, paraffin use has been reported to cause late postoperative complications. A 79-year-old man was presented with an extramedullary tumor and spinal paralysis. Forty-seven years ago, he had undergone pleural plombage using paraffin for the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis. Since the extramedullary tumor was fou…
  • Navigation for Tubular Decompression of the L5 Nerve Root Ganglion after Cement Leakage via a Wiltse Approach. [Case Reports]
    Asian J Neurosurg. 2019 Apr-Jun; 14(2):565-567.Hartmann S, Kavakebi P, … Thomé C
  • Osteoporotic vertebral fractures are a widespread problem in the elderly population. In experienced hands, treatment procedures are safe and can be done in a minimally invasive fashion. Nevertheless, in rare cases, severe complications may occur. We present a case report of cement leakage after vertebroplasty of L5 compressing the nerve root with neurological signs and radiculopathy. An 86-year-o…
  • Surgical Treatment of Complications 55 Years After Extraperiosteal Lucite Ball Plombage for Pulmonary Tuberculosis. [Case Reports]
    Rev Port Cir Cardiotorac Vasc. 2017 Jul-Dec; 24(3-4):139.Calado T, Alvoeiro M, … Félix F
  • CONCLUSIONS: Despite the rapid decline in collapse therapy since the appearance of antitubercular chemotherapy, there are still such elderly patients who remain asymptomatic while carrying residual plombage material. There is no need for routine ablation of any this material, however if any foreign material becames a source of complication should be extracted without delay. As the number of living patients treated by plombage is attenuating rapidly, fewer and fewer will be seen in the future, and no one is likely to accumulate considerable experience with this problem.
  • Supercharged free omental flap plombage for empyema in a patient with an artificial pericardium. [Case Reports]
    Interact Cardiovasc Thorac Surg. 2018 06 01; 26(6):1046-1048.Matsumoto I, Iino K, Takemura H
  • Cavernostomy and fenestration were performed in a patient who developed a lung abscess and empyema in the left lung, which was damaged after multimodality therapy for advanced thymoma. The hospitalized patient suddenly experienced cardiopulmonary arrest due to major bleeding from the left main pulmonary artery. We immediately performed the main pulmonary arterial embolization, and the patient was…
  • Clinically undetected retinal breaks causing retinal detachment: A review of options for management. [Review]
    Surv Ophthalmol. 2018 Jul - Aug; 63(4):579-588.Gupta D, Ching J, Tornambe PE
  • The successful detection of retinal breaks is a critical step in rhegmatogenous retinal detachment surgery in order to prevent persistent/recurrent retinal detachments. Not all retinal breaks causing retinal detachments are obvious. Retinal breaks may be obscured by opacities that are either anterior segment related, lens related, or posterior segment related. Rules to identify breaks based on su…
  • Pulmonar plombage. [Case Reports]
    Med Clin (Barc). 2017 10 11; 149(7):323.Moreno-Higueras M, Moya-Roldán S, … Ceballos-Torres Á
  • Evidence for pleural epithelial-mesenchymal transition in murine compensatory lung growth. [Journal Article]
PLoS One. 2017; 12(5):e0177921.Ysasi AB, Wagner WL, … Mentzer SJ
  • In many mammals, including rodents and humans, removal of one lung results in the compensatory growth of the remaining lung; however, the mechanism of compensatory lung growth is unknown. Here, we investigated the changes in morphology and phenotype of pleural cells after pneumonectomy. Between days 1 and 3 after pneumonectomy, cells expressing α-smooth muscle actin (SMA), a cytoplasmic marker of…
  • [Endobronchial Watanabe Spigot in Treating Pleural Empyema with Fistula]. [Case Reports]
    Kyobu Geka. 2017 Mar; 70(3):163-168.Sekimura A, Yoshimatsu T, … So T
  • For pleural empyema with fistula, fenestration and subsequent omental plombage, and thoracoplasty are frequently necessary. A 57-year-old man was transported by ambulance because of impaired consciousness and septic shock due to pleural empyema on the right caused by a ruptured lung abscess. We performed empyema curettage urgently, drained 800 ml of purulent pleural effusion, and inserted 3 chest…
  • Deformation-induced transitional myofibroblasts contribute to compensatory lung growth. [Journal Article]
Am J Physiol Lung Cell Mol Physiol. 2017 Jan 01; 312(1):L79-L88.Bennett RD, Ysasi AB, … Mentzer SJ
  • In many mammals, including humans, removal of one lung (pneumonectomy) results in the compensatory growth of the remaining lung. Compensatory growth involves not only an increase in lung size, but also an increase in the number of alveoli in the peripheral lung; however, the process of compensatory neoalveolarization remains poorly understood. Here, we show that the expression of α-smooth muscle …
  • [LEGACIES OF SURGERY FOR TUBERCULOSIS AND SUCCESSION TO THE NEXT GENERATION]. [Journal Article]

  • A symposium entitled "Legacies of surgery for tuberculosis and succession to the next generation" was held at the 89th annual meeting of The Japanese Society for Tuberculosis in Gifu. The purpose of the symposium was to look back at the history of surgery for tuberculosis and development of surgical techniques. The contribution of those techniques to the next generation was also discussed. Many u…
  • Calcaneal Ossoscopy. [Journal Article]
    Arthrosc Tech. 2016 Jun; 5(3):e627-31.Toepfer A, Lenze U, Harrasser N
  • Both unicameral bone cysts and intraosseous lipoma of the calcaneus are rare entities that are mostly diagnosed because of unspecific heel pain, pathologic fracture, or as incidental finding. Minimally invasive ossoscopy with endoscopic resection of the tumor followed by grafting can potentially minimize risks of open surgery and speed up convalescence. We present our modifications to previously …
  • Endoscopic resection and allografting for benign osteolytic lesions of the calcaneus. [Journal Article]
    Springerplus. 2016; 5:427.Toepfer A, Lenze U, … Harrasser N
  • CONCLUSIONS: This technique is a simple and safe procedure for benign osteolytic bone lesions of the calcaneus. Compared to its alternatives, grafting with allogenic cancellous bone might prove favourable in this localization for several reasons: Osteointegration, handling, availability and costs. Our preliminary investigations show promising results although further clinical and radiographic results are needed.
