  • Contributions on Clinical Decision Support from the 2018 Literature. [Journal Article]
Yearb Med Inform 2019; 28(1):135-137Koutkias V, Bouaud J, Section Editors for the IMIA Yearbook Section on Decision Support
  • CONCLUSIONS: Three of the four best papers rely on data-driven methods, and one builds on a knowledge-based approach. While there is currently a trend for data-driven decision support, the promising results of such approaches still need to be confirmed by the adoption of these systems and their routine use.
  • Managing Complexity. From Documentation to Knowledge Integration and Informed Decision Findings from the Clinical Information Systems Perspective for 2018. [Journal Article]
Yearb Med Inform 2019; 28(1):95-100Werner OH, Alexander H, Section Editors for the IMIA Yearbook Section on Clinical Information Systems
  • CONCLUSIONS: We could observe ongoing trends from our 2017 analysis. The patient increasingly moves in the focus of the research activities and trans-institutional aggregation of data is still an important field of work. The move to use patient and other clinical data directly for the patient and to support data driven process management, the move away from clinical documentation to patient-focused knowledge generation and support of informed decision, is gaining momentum by the application of new or already known but, due to technological advances, now applicable methodological approaches.
  • Health Information Management: Implications of Artificial Intelligence on Healthcare Data and Information Management. [Journal Article]
Yearb Med Inform 2019; 28(1):56-64Stanfill MH, Marc DT
  • CONCLUSIONS: HIM professionals must focus on improving the quality of coded data that is being used to develop AI applications. HIM professional's ability to identify data patterns will be an important skill as automation advances, though additional skills in data analysis tools and techniques are needed. In addition, HIM professionals should consider how current patient privacy practices apply to AI application, development, and use.AI technology will continue to evolve as will the role of HIM professionals who are in a unique position to take on emerging roles with their depth of knowledge on the sources and origins of healthcare data. The challenge for HIM professionals is to identify leading practices for the management of healthcare data and information in an AI-enabled world.
  • Structural biology of cell surface receptor-ligand interactions. [Review]
    Curr Opin Plant Biol 2019; 52:38-45Moussu S, Santiago J
  • Plants have evolved unique membrane receptors that interpret native and foreign cues to coordinate plant life and adaptation. This large family of receptor proteins have evolved very diverse ectodomains, acquiring the capacity to sense ligands of very different chemical nature. A mechanistic understanding on how these signaling systems work will help to comprehend and unveil key cell biology ques…
  • Engineered skeletal muscles for disease modeling and drug discovery. [Journal Article]
    Biomaterials 2019; 221:119416Wang J, Khodabukus A, … Bursac N
  • Skeletal muscle is the largest organ of human body with several important roles in everyday movement and metabolic homeostasis. The limited ability of small animal models of muscle disease to accurately predict drug efficacy and toxicity in humans has prompted the development in vitro models of human skeletal muscle that fatefully recapitulate cell and tissue level functions and drug responses. W…
  • Tissue-engineered 3D Models for Elucidating Primary and Metastatic Bone Cancer Progression. [Review]
Acta Biomater 2019González Díaz EC, Sinha S, … Yang F
  • Malignant bone tumors are aggressive neoplasms which arise from bone tissue or as a result of metastasis. The most prevalent types of cancer, such as breast, prostate, and lung cancer, all preferentially metastasize to bone, yet the role of the bone niche in promoting cancer progression remains poorly understood. Tissue engineering has the potential to bridge this knowledge gap by providing 3D in…
  • Nanomaterials multifunctional behavior for enlighten cancer therapeutics. [Review]
Semin Cancer Biol 2019Ganji SRR, Dariya B, … Han YK
  • Cancer is an outrageous disease with uncontrolled differentiation, growth, and migration to the other parts of the body. It is the second-most common cause of death both in the U.S. and worldwide. Current conventional therapies, though much improved and with better prognosis, have several limitations. Chemotherapeutic agents, for instance, are cytotoxic to both tumor and healthy cells, and the no…
