  • Seroprevalence of Measles, Rubella, Tetanus, and Diphtheria Antibodies among Children in Haiti, 2017. [Journal Article]
Am J Trop Med Hyg. 2020 Jul 06 [Online ahead of print]Minta AA, Andre-Alboth J, … Tohme RA
  • In Haiti, measles, rubella, and maternal and neonatal tetanus have been eliminated, but a diphtheria outbreak is ongoing as of 2019. We conducted a national representative, household-based, two-stage cluster survey among children aged 5-7 years in 2017 to assess progress toward maintenance of control and elimination of selected vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs). We stratified Haiti into west re…
  • An eye for a tooth: Thylacosmilus was not a marsupial "saber-tooth predator". [Journal Article]
    PeerJ. 2020; 8:e9346.M Janis C, Figueirido B, … Lautenschlager S
  • CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that despite its impressive canines, the "marsupial saber-tooth" was not the ecological analogue of placental saber-tooths, and likely did not use its canines to dispatch its prey. This oft-cited example of convergence requires reconsideration, and T. atrox may have had a unique type of ecology among mammals.
  • Management of overt hypothyroidism during pregnancy. [Review]
Best Pract Res Clin Endocrinol Metab. 2020 Jun 18 [Online ahead of print]Li SW, Chan SY
  • Overt hypothyroidism is a common endocrine disorder affecting 1-2% of women of reproductive age. Optimizing treatment in pregnant women with overt hypothyroidism can reduce adverse fetal and maternal outcomes. Ideally, women who are known to have a history of hypothyroidism or those with risk factors for becoming hypothyroid, should have adequate preconception care to ensure euthyroidism from the…
  • Intraepithelial T Cells Diverge by Intestinal Location as Pigs Age. [Journal Article]
Front Immunol. 2020; 11:1139.Wiarda JE, Trachsel JM, … Loving CL
  • T cells resident within the intestinal epithelium play a central role in barrier integrity and provide a first line of immune defense. Intraepithelial T cells (IETs) are among the earliest immune cells to populate and protect intestinal tissues, thereby giving them an important role in shaping gut health early in life. In pigs, IETs are poorly defined, and their maturation in young pigs has not b…
  • Foehn-cold pool interactions in the Inn Valley during PIANO IOP2. [Journal Article]
    Q J R Meteorol Soc. 2020 Apr; 146(728):1232-1263.Haid M, Gohm A, … Rotach MW
  • A case-study is presented of a south foehn emanating from the Wipp Valley, Austria, which encountered a cold-air pool (CAP) in the Inn Valley near the city of Innsbruck. The analysis is based on data collected during the second Intensive Observation Period of the Penetration and Interruption of Alpine Foehn (PIANO) field experiment. Foehn was initiated on 3 November 2017 by an eastward moving tro…
  • Chemical gradients in human enamel crystallites. [Journal Article]
Nature. 2020 Jul; 583(7814):66-71.DeRocher KA, Smeets PJM, … Joester D
  • Dental enamel is a principal component of teeth1, and has evolved to bear large chewing forces, resist mechanical fatigue and withstand wear over decades2. Functional impairment and loss of dental enamel, caused by developmental defects or tooth decay (caries), affect health and quality of life, with associated costs to society3. Although the past decade has seen progress in our understanding of …
  • Evaluating assessment tools of the quality of clinical ethics consultations: a systematic scoping review from 1992 to 2019. [Journal Article]
BMC Med Ethics. 2020 Jul 01; 21(1):51.Yoon NYS, Ong YT, … Krishna LKR
  • CONCLUSIONS: This review found prevailing assessments of CECons to be piecemeal due to variable goals, contextual factors and practical limitations. The diversity in domains assessed and tools used foregrounds the lack of minimum standards upheld to ensure baseline efficacy. To advance a contextually appropriate, culturally sensitive, program specific assessment tool to assess CECons, clear structural and competency guidelines must be established in the curation of CECons programs, to evaluate their true efficacy and maintain clinical, legal and ethical standards.
  • Ecology for the Shrinking City. [Journal Article]
    Bioscience. 2016 Jun 02; 66(11):965-973.Herrmann DL, Schwarz K, … Hopton ME
  • This article brings together the concepts of shrinking cities-the hundreds of cities worldwide experiencing long-term population loss-and ecology for the city. Ecology for the city is the application of a social-ecological understanding to shaping urban form and function along sustainable trajectories. Ecology for the shrinking city therefore acknowledges that urban transformations to sustainable…
  • Age-dependent Differences in T Cell Responses to Influenza A Virus. [Journal Article]
Am J Respir Cell Mol Biol. 2020 Jul 01 [Online ahead of print]Prigge AD, Ma R, … Ridge KM
  • Respiratory infections from influenza A virus cause substantial morbidity and mortality in children relative to adults. T cells play a critical role in the host response to influenza A virus by supporting the innate and humoral responses, mediating cytotoxic activity, and promoting recovery. There are age-dependent differences in the number, subsets, and localization of T cells, which impact the …
