Over the next 50 years, the prevention and control of chronic diseases, such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer's disease and many cancers, will be one of the most critical challenges in human health. Plant biochemistry and phytonutrient supplements are a promising complementary therapy for the management of chronic disease . Among them, Humulus lupulus has attracted special attention throughout the world because it contains numerous dietary phytochemicals that not only contribute to the aroma and flavor of beer but may also be used for medicinal purposes, as its properties include antiseptic, (an)aphrodisiac, anticancer, antiplatelet, antibacterial, antidiuretic, anti-inflammatory, sedative, hypnotic, and stomachic properties. This review sought to identify and understand the risk factors for chronic disease with a focus on two types of phytochemicals, bitter acids and xanthohumol. The goal was to understand how their metabolites promote human health and reduce the risk of chronic disease.

Amarogentin (AG) is one of the bitter secoiridoid glycosides, which exerts various pharmacological activities as a bitter stomachic. Recently, there is an increasing demand for AG-containing plants in Japan due to their use as folk medicines and food additives; hence, it is crucial to develop analytical techniques that are specific for AG. In this study, a new magnetic particles-based enzyme immunoassay (MPs-EIA) using a specific monoclonal antibody against AG (MAb 1E9) for the rapid determination of AG in plants of the family Gentianaceae was described. AG directly immobilized onto magnetic particles (MPs) was used as a competitor for free AG against MAb 1E9, thereby increasing the surface area of the solid phase and decreasing the immunoreaction time. In addition, the blocking step required in case of the conventional enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay could be avoided in the proposed MPs-EIA, which enables an even more rapid performance for the immunoassay. In the developed MPs-EIA, AG exhibited linearity in the range of 15.6-500 ng mL-1, with a limit of detection of 8.58 ng mL-1. Validation analysis revealed that MPs-EIA is a sufficiently sensitive and rapid for the quantitative analysis of AG in plant samples. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first MPs-EIA that has been applied to plant samples.

- CONCLUSIONS: It is one of the prioritized medicinal plants for economic development in Nepal. Owing to its diverse applications, the species can be developed as an important commodity for alleviation of poverty in rural areas. The various ethno-pharmacological applications of Zanthoxylum armatum have been verified by several related researches. More extensive study on the individual specific phyto-component can lead to novel innovations for the well-being of mankind.

Gmelina arborea has been traditionally used for treatment of abdominal pain, burning sensation and as stomachic. The anti-inflammatory effect of aqueous and methanol extract of this plant has been studied but detailed investigations on anti-inflammatory activity of G. arborea stem bark are still not available. Therefore, the present study was designed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory activity of methanol extract and its fractions using carrageenan induced paw oedema model. Methanol extract at the dose of 500 mg/kg and its ethyl acetate fraction at 50 mg/kg showed significant reduction in paw oedema in comparison with standard drug. Ethyl acetate fraction was subjected to column chromatography which resulted in isolation of a new flavonoid (GM-01). Anti-inflammatory effect of methanol extract and its fractions can be attributed to the presence of the flavonoid GM-01. Further studies are underway for evaluation of anti-inflammatory effect of GM-01 and identification of active constituents present in ethyl acetate fraction.

The purpose of this study was to review the pharmacognostic characteristics of Sasang type-specific medical herbs and suggest biological mechanisms that might be related to the personalized treatment of the East. Major compounds and their pharmacological activities of medical herbs for each Sasang types were systematically reviewed. The pharmacognostic characteristics of its main compounds were systematically analyzed with previous studies and three web-based databases. Sasang type-specific medical herbs were selected, and biological effects of their phytochemicals were reviewed from the pathophysiological features of each Sasang types. Phenolics were dominant in Tae-Yang type-specific herbs, iridoids and triterpenes with antipyretic and diuretic effects were in So-Yang type-specific, saponins (triterpene saponins and steroidal saponins) with antitussive effects were in Tae-Eum type-specific, and monoterpene and sesquiterpenes with stomachic effect were in So-Eum type-specific herbs. Pharmacognostic understandings on Sasang type-specific medical herbs with consideration of type-specific pathophysiological features were provided for the first time. This study would contribute to in-depth understandings on the pathophysiology of Sasang typology and integration of East-Asian and Western personalized medicine.

- CONCLUSIONS: S. sclarea extract manifested anti-inflammatory effect in LPS-induced periodontitis suggesting that it may have a role as a therapeutic agent in periodontal diseases. Having in mind that overproduction of reactive oxygen species is connected to periodontitis, the strong antioxidant capacity may be contributable to anti-inflammatory properties of the extract.

The genus Centaurea L. is one of the largest and important genera of Asteraceae family. Centaurea species have been widely used as herbal remedies in folk medicine for their antidandruff, antidiarrheic, antirheumatic, anti-inflammatory, choleretic, diuretic, digestive, stomachic, astringent, antipyretic, cytotoxic, and antibacterial properties. Centaurea baseri Kose & Alan is a recently described local endemic species in Turkey and this is the first study on the chemical composition and bioactivity of its hydrodistilled essential oil and the crude extract. According to chromatospectral analysis, hexadecanoic acid (42.3%), nonacosane (8.2%), and heptacosane (8.0%) were the main compounds of the essential oil, while 16 compounds were determined in the MeOH extract using LC/MS. Furthermore, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and cytotoxic effects of the essential oil and the extract were evaluated in comparison with the standard agents. The extract showed strong antifungal effect against Candida utilis at the concentration of 60 μg/ml (MIC) where the EO showed growth inhibition at the concentration of 47.00 μg/ml (MIC) against pathogen Bacillus cereus. Both the essential oil and the extract did not show any selective antioxidant properties. The extract showed remarkably selective cytotoxic properties against MCF-7, PANC-1, A549, and C6 glioma cells.

A new polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) hybrid hydrogels were desinged and fabricated by introducing cationic octa-ammonium (Oa)-POSS) into chemically cross-linked cationic PDMAEMA hydrogels via in situ radical freezing polymerization. The prepared gels (shorten as OP-PD gels) show considerably improved properties through the effective incorporation and dispersion of Oa-POSS particles in gels. Comparing to the Oa-POSS-free gels, the hybrid gels own better mechanical properties with higher tensile and compressive strength. Meantime, except the decreased swelling ratio in acid condition, the OP-PD gels still keep excellent swelling ability with obvious pH and temperature double responsiveness, which is affected by the content of Oa-POSS slightly. All OP-PD gels exhibit an ultrarapid deswelling rate due to the interconnected micropores structure caused by freezing and the formation of microhydrophobic region around POSS particles. Moreover, the application potential of OP-PD gels in drug release was exploited by using flutamide as target drug, the result showed that the increased Oa-POSS could improve the drug loading ability, and OP-PD gels showed well controlled-release effect in simulated human stomachic condition. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
