  • [Iodine-induced thyroid dysfunction]. [Review]
Med Klin Intensivmed Notfmed. 2020 Jun 24 [Online ahead of print]Eilsberger F, Luster M, Feldkamp J
  • CONCLUSIONS: In iodine-induced hyperthyroidism, antithyroid drugs and perchlorate are primarily used to decrease thyroid hormone synthesis and further iodine uptake into the thyroid. For the prophylaxis of x‑ray contrast agent-induced hyperthyroidism, perchlorate can be administered in high-risk settings in combination with antithyroid drugs, if possible starting one day before the iodine exposure.
  • The Greek hero Achilles and his mysterious death: transdisciplinary analysis of the gouty hypothesis. [Journal Article]
Clin Exp Rheumatol. 2020 Jun 12 [Online ahead of print]Armocida E, Galassi FM, … Martini M
  • Achilles is a character of Greek mythology whose deeds are mainly told in the Iliad by Homer. Achilles distinguishes himself on the battlefield of Troy with his dexterity and strength, appearing invincible, yet he dies wounded by an arrow in his heel. How could an arrow shot to the heel kill anybody, no matter whether vulnerable or invulnerable? Many researchers have tried to give a medical expla…

    Oncol Lett. 2020 Jul; 20(1):441-447.Tsamakis K, Gavriatopoulou M, … Rizos E
  • COVID-19 has caused unprecedented societal turmoil, triggering a rapid, still ongoing, transformation of healthcare provision on a global level. In this new landscape, it is highly important to acknowledge the challenges this pandemic poses on the care of the particularly vulnerable cancer patients and the subsequent psychosocial impact on them. We have outlined our clinical experience in managin…
  • The Perfect Storm: A Case of Ischemic Stroke in the Setting of Thyroid Storm. [Case Reports]
    Cureus. 2020 May 06; 12(5):e7992.Snyder S, Joseph M
  • Mortality in thyroid storm, without appropriate treatment, can rise as high as 100%. Thyroid storm coexisting with ischemic stroke is a rare presentation that further increases the risk of mortality. Early recognition and appropriate management are critical to the prevention of mortality and morbidity. Here, we review the case of a 63-year-old male presenting with new neurological deficits who wa…
  • A case of thyroxine (T4) toxicosis complicated by thyroid storm with an unusual precipitant. [Case Reports]
    Caspian J Intern Med. 2020; 11(2):231-234.Idowu AO, Adesegun OA, … Osonuga A
  • CONCLUSIONS: T4 toxicosis is a distinct biochemical entity of clinical significance. Physicians should bear in mind that micro-trauma from an investigation such as fine needle aspiration of the thyroid gland can tilt a thyrotoxic patient into thyroid storm, and this risk should be considered and prepared for by physicians and patients.
  • The role of head and neck cancer advocacy organizations during the COVID-19 pandemic. [Review]
Head Neck. 2020 May 29 [Online ahead of print]Yan F, Rauscher E, … Moore MG
  • The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on many aspects of head and neck cancer (HNC) care. The uncertainty and stress resulting from these changes has led many patients and caregivers to turn to HNC advocacy groups for guidance and support. Here we outline some of the issues being faced by patients with HNC during the current crisis and provide examples of programs being developed by …
  • ENDOCRINOLOGY IN THE TIME OF COVID-19: Management of hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. [Journal Article]
    Eur J Endocrinol. 2020 Jul; 183(1):G33-G39.Boelaert K, Visser WE, … Persani L
  • This manuscript provides guidance on the management of thyroid dysfunction during the COVID-19 pandemic. Autoimmune thyroid diseases are not linked to increased risks of COVID-19. Uncontrolled thyrotoxicosis may result in more severe complications from SARS-CoV-2 infection, including thyroid storm. The management of patients with a new diagnosis of hyperthyroidism is best undertaken with a block-…
  • [Endocrine Dysfunction Associated with Immune Checkpoint Blockade]. [Journal Article]
Gan To Kagaku Ryoho. 2020 Feb; 47(2):203-206.Iwama S
  • Immune checkpoint inhibitors(ICIs)have been widely used in patients with advanced malignancies. However, these drugs can cause immune-related adverse events(irAEs)in several organs, including lung, skin, gastrointestinal tract, liver, nerve, muscle, and endocrine organs. Endocrine irAEs include hypopituitarism, primary adrenal insufficiency, thyroid dysfunction, hypoparathyroidism, and type 1 dia…
  • Non-technical skills and otolaryngology: systematic review. [Journal Article]
J Laryngol Otol. 2020 May 08 [Online ahead of print]Bannon R, Stewart KE, Bannister M
  • CONCLUSIONS: Little research has been undertaken on non-technical skills in otolaryngology. Training surgeons' non-technical skill levels are similar across every tested aspect. The research already performed can guide further studies, particularly amongst non-training otolaryngology surgeons and in both emergency and elective non-simulated environments.
  • Impact of COVID-19 on Nuclear Medicine in Germany, Austria and Switzerland: An International Survey in April 2020. [Journal Article]
Nuklearmedizin. 2020 Apr 28 [Online ahead of print]Freudenberg LS, Dittmer U, Herrmann K
  • CONCLUSIONS: Nuclear medicine services are notably reduced 3 weeks after the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic reached Germany, Austria and Switzerland on a large scale. We must be aware that the current crisis will also have a significant economic impact on the healthcare system. As the survey cannot adapt to daily dynamic changes in priorities, it serves as a first snapshot requiring follow-up studies and comparisons with other countries and regions.

J Korean Med Sci. 2020 Apr 20; 35(15):e103.Kim JH, Paik NS, … Park HK
  • CONCLUSIONS: Here, we propose the following approaches. First, patient data should be prospectively collected. By tracking outcomes and complications of an implant-based augmentation mammaplasty, both high-quality care and patient safety can be ensured. Second, stakeholders in implant-based augmentation mammaplasty should collaborate with customers and regulatory authorities. Third, surgeons should consider applying imaging modalities for early detection of postoperative complications.
