  • [Basic Knowledge of Drug Pain Therapy in the Palliative Situation]. [Journal Article]
    Dtsch Med Wochenschr. 2020 Jul; 145(13):917-925.Weber S, Lampert A, … Rolke R
  • This review provides an overview of the basic knowledge of drug pain therapy in the palliative situation. Pain is one of the main symptoms in 60 to 90 % of cancer patients. Pain also develops with neurological and other diseases that occur in end-of-life situations. To address this symptom, a holistic strategy is required that encompasses all physical, psychological, social, and spiritual aspects…
  • Assessment of tramadol pharmacokinetics in correlation with CYP2D6 and clinical symptoms. [Journal Article]
    Drug Metab Pers Ther. 2020 Jun 29 [Online ahead of print]Ahmadimanesh M, Naeini MB, … Ghazi-Khansari M
  • Objectives Due to lack of adequate data on tramadol kinetic in relevance of CYP2D6 toxicity, this study was designed to investigate the effect of CYP2D6 phenotype in tramadol poisoning. The saliva, urine and blood samples were taken at the admission time. Consequently, concentration of tramadol and its major metabolites were measured. Methods A pharmacokinetic and metabolic study was developed in…
  • The Efficacy and Safety of Opioids in Total Joint Arthroplasty: A Direct Meta-Analysis. [Journal Article]
J Arthroplasty. 2020 May 27 [Online ahead of print]Hannon CP, Fillingham YA, … Della Valle CJ
  • CONCLUSIONS: Moderate evidence supports the use of opioids in TJA to reduce postoperative pain and opioid consumption. Opioids should be used cautiously as they may increase the risk of complications, such as respiratory depression and sedation, especially if combined with other central nervous system depressants or used in the elderly.
  • Assessment and Management of Postoperative Pain Associated with Sleep Apnea Surgery. [Review]
Otolaryngol Clin North Am. 2020 Jun 18 [Online ahead of print]Waxman JA, Shenouda KG, Lin HS
  • A literature review was conducted regarding the assessment and treatment of postoperative pain following surgery for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Given the risks of opioid use by patients with OSA, special attention to opioid risk reduction and avoidance is warranted in this population. The results of this review demonstrate the existence of a body of evidence that supports the use of nonopioid…
  • New directions in the treatment of opioid withdrawal. [Review]
Lancet. 2020 Jun 20; 395(10241):1938-1948.Srivastava AB, Mariani JJ, Levin FR
  • The treatment of opioid withdrawal is an important area of clinical concern when treating patients with chronic, non-cancer pain, patients with active opioid use disorder, and patients receiving medication for opioid use disorder. Current standards of care for medically supervised withdrawal include treatment with μ-opioid receptor agonists, (eg, methadone), partial agonists (eg, buprenorphine), …
  • Opioid crisis in primary care? An audit of high-dose opioid prescribing at Bangholm GP Practice. [Journal Article]
    Br J Gen Pract. 2020 Jun; 70(suppl 1)Greene C, Pearson A
  • CONCLUSIONS: Opioid prescribing guidelines are not followed. The significant issues are: long-term prescriptions for chronic pain, especially back pain; new patients registering with repeat prescriptions; and no outcomes of treatment agreed, a crucial message is the goal is pain management rather than relief. Changes have been introduced at the practice: a patient information sheet, compulsory 1-month review for new patients on opioids, and in-surgery pain referrals.
  • Misuse of Tramadol in the United States: An Analysis of the National Survey of Drug Use and Health 2002-2017. [Review]
    Subst Abuse. 2020; 14:1178221820930006.Reines SA, Goldmann B, … Lu L
  • CONCLUSIONS: This analysis shows a low prevalence of oral tramadol misuse, relative to other commonly prescribed opioids, in a nationally representative sample of noninstitutionalized US residents. Estimates of reported oral tramadol misuse have remained relatively stable over time and are substantially lower than those reported for comparators when adjusted for prescription volume. Reports of oral tramadol misuse are also much less than alprazolam, another Schedule IV drug.
  • Occurrence of pharmaceuticals in the Danube and drinking water wells: Efficiency of riverbank filtration. [Journal Article]
    Environ Pollut. 2020 Jun 08; 265(Pt A):114893.Kondor AC, Jakab G, … Szalai Z
  • Surface waters are becoming increasingly contaminated by pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs), which is a potential risk factor for drinking water quality owing to incomplete riverbank filtration. This study examined the efficiency of riverbank filtration with regard to 111 PhACs in a highly urbanized section of the river Danube. One hundred seven samples from the Danube were compared to 90 …
  • Pain control after laparoscopic cholecystectomy. A prospective study. [Journal Article]
    Ann Ital Chir. 2020 Jun 10; 9Cianci P, Tartaglia N, … Full AA
  • CONCLUSIONS: Various topical and intravenous ways for analgesic actions have been used to improve the pain control after laparoscopic procedures, individually and in comparison between them. The main result of our research is that the use of levobupivacaine employed in the topical intraperitoneal application anesthesia by instillation and nebulization, do not improve the postoperative pain in the first 24 hours after LC, compared with intravenous analgesic elastomeric pump.Despite the positive data found in the literature, our observations have not shown a better pain control after laparoscopic cholecystectomy with the use of intraperitoneal analgesia compared to intravenous.
  • Involvement of CYP2D6 and CYP2B6 on tramadol pharmacokinetics. [Journal Article]
    Pharmacogenomics. 2020 Jun 15 [Online ahead of print]Saiz-Rodríguez M, Ochoa D, … Abad-Santos F
  • This study included 24 healthy volunteers who received a single 37.5 mg oral dose of tramadol. We analyzed 18 polymorphisms within CYP2D6, CYP2B6, CYP3A, COMT, ABCB1, SLC22A1 and OPRM1 genes by quantitative PCR, to study whether these polymorphisms affect its pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and safety. CYP2D6 intermediate metabolizers (n = 6) showed higher tramadol plasma concentrations and lo…
