  • Otitis Media: Rapid Evidence Review. [Journal Article]
Am Fam Physician 2019; 100(6):350-356Gaddey HL, Wright MT, Nelson TN
  • Acute otitis media (AOM) is the most common diagnosis in childhood acute sick visits. By three years of age, 50% to 85% of children will have at least one episode of AOM. Symptoms may include ear pain (rubbing, tugging, or holding the ear may be a sign of pain), fever, irritability, otorrhea, anorexia, and sometimes vomiting or lethargy. AOM is diagnosed in symptomatic children with moderate to s…
  • Myosin II isoforms play distinct roles in adherens junction biogenesis. [Journal Article]
Elife 2019; 8Heuzé ML, Sankara Narayana GHN, … Ladoux B
  • Adherens junction (AJ) assembly under force is essential for many biological processes like epithelial monolayer bending, collective cell migration, cell extrusion and wound healing. The acto-myosin cytoskeleton acts as a major force-generator during the de novo formation and remodeling of AJ. Here, we investigated the role of non-muscle myosin II isoforms (NMIIA and NMIIB) in epithelial junction…
  • Why do infants pull their ears? [Journal Article]
    Auris Nasus Larynx 2019; 46(5):803-807Cakabay T, Üstün Bezgin S, … Ozdemir M
  • CONCLUSIONS: In this study, the majority of the infants referred to the ENT outpatient clinic had normal examination findings, while the rate of OME diagnosis was high. Considering the negative consequences of EOM in infants, the diagnosis of the EOM becomes extremely important. If there are no otologic pathologies in the majority of infants who were admitted with ear pulling and tugging, the possibility of different factors in etiology gives rise to thought. Therefore, further studies are required to prove this condition.
  • Papillary Muscle Tugging Approximation for Functional Mitral Regurgitation. [Journal Article]
    Ann Thorac Surg 2019; 107(6):e427-e429Matsui Y, Shingu Y, … Kubota S
  • The surgical approach is challenging for patients with severe functional mitral regurgitation with nonischemic/ischemic dilated cardiomyopathy who are unsuitable for heart transplantation or ventricular assist device implantation. We developed a new surgical treatment named papillary muscle tugging approximation combined with mitral valve replacement. This technique is safe and feasible, with exc…
  • Pulling and Tugging on the Retina: Mechanical Impact of Glaucoma Beyond the Optic Nerve Head. [Review]
    Invest Ophthalmol Vis Sci 2019; 60(1):26-35Fortune B
  • Several retinal conditions have been recently revealed by optical coherence tomography (OCT) to occur more frequently in glaucoma than in healthy eyes: paravascular defects, peripapillary retinoschisis, and pseudo-cysts of the inner nuclear layer (INL). Here the clinical OCT findings described in these reports are reviewed and a framework that could explain why they are related and occur more fre…
  • An in vitro correlation of metastatic capacity and dual mechanostimulation. [Journal Article]
PLoS One 2018; 13(11):e0207490Indra I, Gasparski AN, Beningo KA
  • Cells are under the influence of multiple forms of mechanical stimulation in vivo. For example, a cell is subjected to mechanical forces from tissue stiffness, shear and tensile stress and transient applied strain. Significant progress has been made in understanding the cellular mechanotransduction mechanisms in response to a single mechanical parameter. However, our knowledge of how a cell respo…
