  • Microflora composition in the gastrointestinal tract in patients with Barrett's esophagus. [Journal Article]
    J Thorac Dis 2019; 11(Suppl 12):S1581-S1587Okereke I, Hamilton C, … Pyles R
  • CONCLUSIONS: In patients with Barrett's esophagus, Streptococcal genera are widespread throughout the esophagus. Gram-positive genera tend to decrease as a percentage of overall flora distally. Obtaining a simple swab of the oropharynx or endoscope itself appears to be a poor substitute for tissue biopsy of esophageal mucosa when evaluating microflora patterns.
  • Oro-facial manifestations in lepromatous leprosy patients in Central India: clinical findings from a cross-sectional study. [Journal Article]
    Clin Oral Investig 2019Gupta B, Gupta S, … Patil S
  • CONCLUSIONS: The facial manifestations of leprosy are quite common, readily recognizable, and relatively specific to the disease. Thus, the presence of facial manifestations, especially with co-existing oral lesions must prompt the clinician to mandate further investigations to confirm the diagnosis. As evidenced by the present study, facial manifestations and oral lesions are an integral part of leprosy. In addition to being a diagnostic parameter, facial manifestations and oral lesions could potentially be used to monitor the disease progression and treatment outcome.
  • Central positional nystagmus: Characteristics and model-based explanations. [Journal Article]
Prog Brain Res 2019; 249:211-225Choi JY, Kim JS
  • The central vestibular system operates to precisely estimate the rotational velocity and gravity orientation using the inherently ambiguous information from peripheral vestibular system. Therefore, any lesions disrupting this function can generate positional nystagmus. Central positional nystagmus (CPN) can be classified into the paroxysmal (transient) and persistent forms. The paroxysmal CPN has…
  • Add oleander to your list of corrosives. [Case Reports]
    Turk J Emerg Med 2019; 19(3):115-116Taskin O, Belli F, … Disel NR
  • CONCLUSIONS: Besides the systemic effects of the oleander plant, this case demonstrates that it could cause serious tissue necrosis when applied locally and corrosive esophagitis when taken by oral way. Patients must be examined and followed also for local toxic effects.
  • Angioedema Masqueraders. [Review]
Clin Exp Allergy 2019Fok JS, Katelaris CH
  • Angioedema is a common reason for referral to immunology and allergy specialists. Not all cases are in fact angioedema. There are many conditions that may mimic its appearance, resulting in misdiagnosis. This may happen when a clinician is unfamiliar with conditions resembling angioedema or when there is a low index of clinical suspicion. In this article, we explore a list of differential diagnos…
  • Microbiota of the Oropharynx and Endoscope Compared to the Esophagus. [Journal Article]
Sci Rep 2019; 9(1):10201Okereke IC, Miller AL, … Pyles RB
  • The role of the microflora in the development of esophageal disease is still largely unknown and is being investigated in more detail. Our goal was to determine how the microbiota levels of endoscope and uvular swabs compared to the levels of tissue biopsies along various points of the esophagus. 17 patients with Barrett's esophagus agreed to participate in the study. Biopsies of esophageal mucos…
