    Medicine (Baltimore). 2021 Apr 02; 100(13):e25362.Zhang Y, Liu T, … Hu Z
  • We investigated the vaginal flora diversity of preschool-aged (ie, 4-6-year-old) girls in southwest China.Fourteen preschool-aged girls were enrolled in this study. The statuses and differences in their vaginal flora were evaluated by Gram staining, bacterial culturing, and sequencing analysis.Gram staining and microbial culturing showed that the main vaginal flora of the preschool-aged girls wer…
  • [Paediatric vulval clinic]. [Review]
    Hautarzt. 2021 Mar; 72(3):207-214.Anemüller W, Langan EA, Recke A
  • In 2008 a vulval clinic was established at the University Clinic of Schleswig Holstein, Campus Luebeck, Department of Dermatology. A total of 1227 patients were referred to the clinic between 2008 and October 2020, including 91 children (age range 1-13 years) and 17 adolescents (age range 14-17 years). The most common paediatric vulval conditions encountered were lichen sclerosus (33%), vulvitis …
  • Management of Urologic Conditions in Small Ruminants. [Review]
Vet Clin North Am Food Anim Pract. 2021 Mar; 37(1):93-104.Scully CM
  • Small ruminants frequently experience urologic conditions, such as obstructive urolithiasis, posthitis, vulvitis, and urinary tract infections. Urologic conditions are more common in male small ruminants, especially castrated males, primarily due to their anatomy. Traditionally, urologic conditions warranted culling from the herd without significant efforts in treatment. However, more goats and s…
  • Identification of sulfur components enhancing the anti-Candida effect of Lactobacillus rhamnosus Lcr35. [Journal Article]
    Sci Rep. 2020 10 13; 10(1):17074.Dausset C, Bornes S, … Nivoliez A
  • GYNOPHILUS (Lcr REGENERANS) is a live biotherapeutic product (LBP) aimed at restoring the vaginal microbiome and contains the live biotherapeutic microorganism Lactobacillus rhamnosus Lcr35. In this study, the LBP formulation and manufacturing process significantly enhanced the anti-Candida activity of L. rhamnosus Lcr35, with a complete loss of viability of the yeast after 48 h of coincubation. …
  • Prevalence of urinary system, pelvic organ, and genital tract disorders among women with type 1 diabetes in Germany. [Journal Article]
Prim Care Diabetes. 2021 Apr; 15(2):257-261.van den Boom L, Kalder M, Kostev K
  • CONCLUSIONS: These findings may have implications for the future care of women with T1D. Firstly, the focus should not be on diabetes management alone, but also on identifying and handling additional associated comorbidities including urinary system and genital tract disorders. Secondly, the data suggest that patients with T1D should be asked specifically about symptoms they may be experiencing that are related to the associated disorders identified.
  • Lichenoid dermatoses involving the vulva: A clinical-pathologic correlation✰. [Review]
Semin Diagn Pathol. 2021 Jan; 38(1):3-18.Shalin SC, Racher LM, Campbell KK
  • The lichenoid tissue reaction pattern generally signifies cytotoxic damage to the epithelium. When such reaction pattern occurs on vulvar skin or mucosa, the effects can result in considerable morbidity. None of the entities discussed in this review are entirely unique to the vulva, however, some entities may classically occur at this site, while others tend to be widespread diseases that may inc…
  • Anti-biofilm activity of chlorhexidine digluconate against Candida albicans vaginal isolates. [Journal Article]
    PLoS One. 2020; 15(9):e0238428.Alvendal C, Mohanty S, … Brauner A
  • CONCLUSIONS: Biofilm is a problem in patients with recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis reducing the effect of antifungal treatment. Development of new treatment strategies are urgently needed to decrease the recurrences. In already established biofilm, chlorhexidine digluconate dispersed the biofilm and was more effective in eradicating candida compared to fluconazole. Future treatment strategy may thus be a combination of chlorhexidine digluconate and fluconazole and prophylactic use of chlorhexidine digluconate to prevent biofilm formation and restrict infections.
  • Oral versus intra-vaginal imidazole and triazole anti-fungal treatment of uncomplicated vulvovaginal candidiasis (thrush). [Meta-Analysis]
    Cochrane Database Syst Rev. 2020 08 24; 8:CD002845.Denison HJ, Worswick J, … Watson MC
  • CONCLUSIONS: Oral anti-fungal treatment probably improves short- and long-term mycological cure over intra-vaginal treatment for uncomplicated vaginal candidiasis. Oral treatment was the favoured treatment preference by participants, though the certainty of this evidence is low. The decision to prescribe or recommend an anti-fungal for oral or intra-vaginal administration should take into consideration safety in terms of withdrawals and side effects, as well as cost and treatment preference. Unless there is a previous history of adverse reaction to one route of administration or contraindications, women who are purchasing their own treatment should be given full information about the characteristics and costs of treatment to make their own decision. If health services are paying the treatment cost, decision-makers should consider whether the higher cost of some oral anti-fungals is worth the gain in convenience, if this is the patient's preference.
  • Improving management of the genitourinary syndrome of menopause: evaluation of a health system-based, cluster-randomized intervention. [Randomized Controlled Trial]
Am J Obstet Gynecol. 2021 01; 224(1):62.e1-62.e13.Vesco KK, Leo MC, … Clark AL
  • CONCLUSIONS: Overall, the intervention did not lead to more diagnoses or prescription therapy for postmenopausal genitourinary symptoms but did result in greater distribution of patient information. Gynecology clinicians were more likely to address genitourinary symptoms generally and were more likely to make a vulvovaginal diagnosis after the intervention. Further efforts for improving care should consider ongoing clinician education beginning with enhanced menopause curricula in residency training. Additional interventions to consider include greater access for postmenopausal women to gynecologic care, addressing treatment barriers, and development of national performance metrics.
  • Vulvar lesion mimicking vitiligo: A case report. [Case Reports]
    Case Rep Womens Health. 2020 Jul; 27:e00234.Gutierrez P, Gandhi K, … Ventolini G
  • Post-inflammatory hypopigmentation (PIH) is an acquired partial or total loss of pigment that occurs as a result of cutaneous inflammation. Clinically, post-inflammatory hypopigmentation is recognized by a discoloration of the skin; however, proper diagnosis requires a skin biopsy. Although post-inflammatory hypopigmentation is similar in appearance to vitiligo, histopathological evaluation highl…
  • Proposal for a microcosm biofilm model for the study of vulvovaginal candidiasis. [Journal Article]
Biofouling. 2020 05; 36(5):610-620.Cordeiro RA, de Andrade ARC, … Sidrim JJC
  • This study proposes a microcosm biofilm (MiB) model for the study of vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC). Different conditions that mimic the vaginal environment were tested for MiB formation. The best growth conditions were obtained with samples incubated in vaginal fluid simulator medium pH 4.5 at 35 °C under a microaerophilic atmosphere. MiBs were evaluated for growth kinetics, fluconazole suscepti…
