- Maternal-Fetal Administration of Risdiplam Partially Rescues the SMNΔ7 Mouse Model of Spinal Muscular Atrophy. [Journal Article]Ann Neurol. 2026 Jul 15. [Online ahead of print]AN
- CONCLUSIONS: Our efforts demonstrate a combination of prenatal and postnatal therapy must be used for optimum therapeutic outcomes in the treatment of patients with SMA. ANN NEUROL 2026.

- Comparative Seizure Outcomes of Vagus Nerve Stimulation, Deep Brain Stimulation, and Their Combination in Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome. [Journal Article]Ann Neurol. 2026 Jul 14. [Online ahead of print]AN
- CONCLUSIONS: VNS and DBS provide comparable seizure reduction in LGS over a 2-year follow-up period. DBS + VNS was associated with further improvements in seizure reduction in this small, retrospective dataset. This possibility warrants further investigation. ANN NEUROL 2026.

- Diabetes and the Metabolic Syndrome as Drivers of Neurodegeneration: Convergent Mechanisms Linking Peripheral Neuropathy and Dementia. [Review]Ann Neurol. 2026 Jul 07. [Online ahead of print]AN
- The metabolic syndrome, a state of progressive metabolic dysfunction, injures the peripheral and central nervous systems, promoting peripheral neuropathy (PN) and cognitive impairment (CI), respectively. We posit PN and CI are connected in the metabolic syndrome framework, built on the premise that neurons, whether in the peripheral or central nervous systems, are susceptible to similar injury fr…

- Sex Differences in the Association of Simultaneous Decline in Blood Pressure and Decline in Cognition during Aging. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: This large longitudinal study reports evidence of a relationship between simultaneous decline in systolic BP and cognition in women, but not men. As women experience a disproportionate burden of both hypertension and cognitive decline in late-life, declining systolic BP, a routine clinical measure, may serve as an important indicator of concurrent cognitive decline in older women. Understanding these sex-specific associations may help advance the understanding of drivers behind sex differences in cognitive decline. ANN NEUROL 2026.

- Assessing Progression Independent of Relapse Activity in Multiple Sclerosis Using a Patient-Reported Disability Measure and Self-Administered Neuroperformance Outcomes. [Journal Article]Ann Neurol. 2026 Jul 06. [Online ahead of print]AN
- CONCLUSIONS: Despite only partial agreement with EDSS-based definitions, PDDS/self-administered test-based worsening and PIRA definitions were clinically meaningful, by identifying patients with greater brain damage and poorer QoL, supporting their use in clinical practice. ANN NEUROL 2026.

- AQP4 and MOG Characterize the Autoantibody Landscape of Checkpoint Blockade-Induced Optic Neuritis. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: This study establishes AQP4 and MOG as the dominant autoantibodies in CBON, providing a serological framework for diagnosis and classification. The persistent antibody response following ICI-induced seroconversion offers direction for future mechanistic investigations. ANN NEUROL 2026.

- Five Issues of Artificial Intelligence in Science: Sailing the Ship of Theseus. [Journal Article]Ann Neurol. 2026 Jul 02. [Online ahead of print]AN
- Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming part of the working infrastructure of academic medicine. Because grants convert scientific ideas into protected time, infrastructure, and institutional priority, they provide a revealing test case for AI's effects on biomedicine. Five issues are emerging: language, agency, review, doership, and identity. AI can polish weak proposals, shift the origin of id…
