- Global retinoblastoma service availability in 2024 and equity trends since 2017. [Journal Article]Br J Ophthalmol. 2026 Jul 16. [Online ahead of print]BJ
- CONCLUSIONS: Between 2017 and 2024, global availability of Rb services increased and income-related inequality narrowed. However, advanced diagnostic and eye-preserving treatments remain predominantly available in higher-income settings.

- Nationwide incidence and prevalence of inherited retinal disease in Sweden, 2006-2021: a population-based register study. [Journal Article]Br J Ophthalmol. 2026 Jul 10. [Online ahead of print]BJ
- CONCLUSIONS: This nationwide population-based study provides the first comprehensive estimates of IRD prevalence and incidence in Sweden. The findings indicate a stable incidence of IRD over the past two decades. These results underscore the need for ongoing surveillance and targeted healthcare planning to address the evolving burden of IRDs.

- Novel technique for treating extraocular muscle adherence after fracture repair. [Journal Article]Br J Ophthalmol. 2026 Jul 06. [Online ahead of print]BJ
- CONCLUSIONS: After release from adhesions at the site of prior fracture repair(s), fat-wrapping of the outer surface of the inferior rectus muscle can markedly improve BSV fields, ocular ductions and deviations. Restoration of a viable extraconal fat layer appears to provide a 'fluid' medium between freed muscle and the orbital wall and block further adhesion between the two raw surfaces but the technique has limited results where prior surgery has caused adhesions involving the lower fornix or pre-equatorial tissues.

- CONCLUSIONS: Incorrect intraocular gas concentration is likely under-reported but can cause devastating, preventable harm. Standardised systems for storage, preparation, verification and postoperative review may reduce risk while supporting environmentally responsible practice.

- Fast progressors in Asian normal-tension glaucoma: 10 years and beyond in a longitudinal cohort. [Journal Article]Br J Ophthalmol. 2026 Jul 06. [Online ahead of print]BJ
- CONCLUSIONS: This longitudinal cohort study highlights distinct progression patterns in Asian patients with NTG, with approximately 10.9% exhibiting fast progression. Insufficient IOP reduction and the presence of DH were associated with rapid progression, emphasising the need for close monitoring of the patients with NTG in Asian populations.

- Incidence of bilateral disease and choroidal neovascularisation in punctate inner choroiditis. [Journal Article]Br J Ophthalmol. 2026 Jul 03. [Online ahead of print]BJ
- CONCLUSIONS: PIC frequently presents unilaterally but carries risk of bilateral progression. CNV is common at presentation and is a cause of vision loss. Immunosuppression is associated with reduced odds of active CNV.

- Reference map of multimodal vision deficits in intermediate age-related macular degeneration: contrast sensitivity and low-contrast visual acuity. [Journal Article]Br J Ophthalmol. 2026 Jul 01. [Online ahead of print]BJ
- CONCLUSIONS: The functional consequences of AMD structural biomarkers were validated by structure-function analyses. We provide a reference map of multimodal vision deficits in AMD for CS and LCVA that could be useful to follow the progression of vision loss in AMD in routine clinical practice and as a clinical trial endpoint.

- CONCLUSIONS: The Mask R-CNN-based RDV measurement provides a sensitive 3D biomarker for assessing PSC efficacy and monitoring MTM progression. The system offers objective, high-precision quantification of retinal structural changes, addressing limitations of manual OCT analysis.

- Bacterial keratitis: a global review of current practices, challenges and innovations. [Review]Br J Ophthalmol. 2026 Jun 29. [Online ahead of print]BJ
- Bacterial keratitis is a major cause of corneal blindness worldwide, with marked differences in clinical presentation and risk factors across regions. In high-income countries, contact lens use is the leading risk factor, while in low- and middle-income countries, trauma-related infections are more prevalent. Management relies on timely diagnosis and sensitivity-guided topical antibiotic therapy.…

- Real-world integration of an autonomous artificial intelligence system for diabetic retinopathy screening in an endocrinology outpatient clinic. [Journal Article]Br J Ophthalmol. 2026 Jun 29. [Online ahead of print]BJ
- CONCLUSIONS: In a real-world endocrinology clinic, autonomous AI screening for DR using AEYE-DS integrated with the Topcon NW500 enabled efficient DR screening and achieved high non-mydriatic imageability. A clinically relevant proportion of patients requiring ophthalmic evaluation has been captured. Internal referral for confirmatory testing enabled assessment of downstream outcomes. The findings support scalable, point-of-care autonomous screening and a stepped-referral approach for AI-positive patients.

- CONCLUSIONS: Maternal smoking during pregnancy, particularly in the first trimester, was associated with increased risk of multiple early childhood ophthalmologic conditions, highlighting the importance of smoking cessation during pregnancy to reduce potential risks to children's visual health.

- Clinical characteristics and ompA serovar correlation in adult inclusion conjunctivitis: a cohort study in China. [Journal Article]Br J Ophthalmol. 2026 Jun 25. [Online ahead of print]BJ
- CONCLUSIONS: This study provides a clinical and molecular profile of AIC and highlights variability across ompA serotypes. By generating data from a Chinese cohort, it helps address the limited evidence base in this setting and may support improved clinical recognition and future genotype-phenotype research.

- Drusen volume and reticular pseudodrusen volume from optical coherence tomography with deep learning as risk factors for progression to late age-related macular degeneration in eyes with reticular pseudodrusen and contralateral macular neovascularisation. [Journal Article]Br J Ophthalmol. 2026 Jun 30. [Online ahead of print]BJ
- CONCLUSIONS: The deep learning-based volumetric segmentation tool allows OCT-derived automated volume quantification of different types of drusen based on OCT. In eyes with RPD and contralateral neovascular AMD, greater RPD volume and large drusen and/or drusenoid PED volume carried greater risk of developing late AMD in 2 years.
