- Short-term economic impact of early leaks following metabolic bariatric surgery. [Journal Article]Br J Surg. 2026 Jul 11. [Online ahead of print]BJ
- CONCLUSIONS: Early leak after MBS markedly increased health resource utilization, mainly due to an increase in hospitalizations, with cost increase associated with the complexity of the event.

- Patient-Reported Outcomes in Masculinizing Gender-Affirming Chest Surgery: Validation of the GENDER-Q Chest Scales. [Journal Article]Br J Surg. 2026 Jul 08. [Online ahead of print]BJ
- CONCLUSIONS: The GENDER-Q Chest scales evidenced construct validity to measure appearance of chest, nipples, and scars for individuals seeking or undergoing masculinizing gender-affirming chest surgery. The GENDER-Q Chest scales provide a robust, validated approach for assessing outcomes in this context and are well-suited for generating high-quality evidence on patient-reported outcomes.

- Making the OR work: a socio-material study of ergonomics in the operating room. [Journal Article]Br J Surg. 2026 Jul 06. [Online ahead of print]BJ
- CONCLUSIONS: Ergonomic barriers were described within the work system of the SEIPS framework. Social positionality and differential levels of agency, as well as lack of team collaboration and misperceptions of others' roles, were central to ergonomic challenges. Conflicts between problems lying with the system/organization, but solution being left to individuals, were also central to challenges to optimal OR ergonomics.

- A randomized, noninferiority clinical trial of Single-Shot Intrathecal Morphine versus Continuous Wound Infiltration for postoperative pain control after open pancreatoduodenectomy. [Journal Article]Br J Surg. 2026 Jul 06. [Online ahead of print]BJ
- CONCLUSIONS: ITM provides noninferior overall and superior early analgesia to CWI after open pancreatoduodenectomy, although careful monitoring for early side effects is warranted.

- Trimester-Specific Safety of Laparoscopic versus Open Abdominal Surgery During Pregnancy: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis. [Journal Article]Br J Surg. 2026 Jun 29. [Online ahead of print]BJ
- CONCLUSIONS: Laparoscopy confers maternal benefits and reduces preterm delivery but is associated with higher fetal loss and elevated composite adverse outcomes in the second trimester.

- The Gut Microbiome in Surgical Oncology: Mechanisms, Perioperative Outcomes, and Therapeutic Opportunities. [Journal Article]Br J Surg. 2026 Jun 29. [Online ahead of print]BJ
- CONCLUSIONS: The microbiome is a critical, modifiable determinant of both short-term surgical recovery and long-term oncologic survival. Future surgical oncology practice will need to integrate precision surgical microbiome-mediated biotherapeutics to optimise outcomes in multidisciplinary cancer care.

- Global disparities in hepatocellular carcinoma outcomes: multicentre study. [Journal Article]Br J Surg. 2026 Jun 22. [Online ahead of print]BJ
- CONCLUSIONS: Marked disparities in disease presentation, access to treatment and survival were observed between regions. Tailored regional guidelines are urgently needed to address these inequities and improve outcomes.

- A randomized controlled trial comparing non-selective versus selective TIRADS-based cytology in thyroid cancer diagnostics. [Journal Article]Br J Surg. 2026 Jun 20. [Online ahead of print]BJ
- CONCLUSIONS: This randomized controlled trial supports the use of EU-TIRADS to correctly select neoplastic nodules for FNA without missing thyroid cancer. The proportion of patients where FNA can be safely omitted using EU-TIRADS may however be exaggerated, indicating a need for further refinement of risk stratification systems for thyroid cancer diagnostics.

- Development of a robotic training curriculum for visceral and gastrointestinal surgical trainees: an international Delphi study. [Journal Article]Br J Surg. 2026 Jun 04; 113(6).BJ
- CONCLUSIONS: International surgical experts, trainees, and other key stakeholders reached consensus on the critical components of a platform-agnostic robotic training curriculum for GI surgical trainees. This will help shape the future of robotic surgical education and certification, promote standardised training practices, and ultimately benefit patient safety and outcomes.

- Seeing the Unseen: A Theory of Sexual Misconduct Perception in the Surgical Workplace. [Journal Article]Br J Surg. 2026 Jun 16. [Online ahead of print]BJ
- CONCLUSIONS: The Lateral View X-ray theory explains how sexual misconduct can be simultaneously pervasive and invisible within surgery. Awareness depends on vantage point, where those least exposed perceive little problem, whereas those affected perceive structural harm. Embedding this framework in surgical education may widen perspective, improve responses and support cultural change.

- Metastatic Lymph Node Burden and Invasive Tumour Features Inform First Recurrence Patterns After Curative-Intent Resection for Intrahepatic Cholangiocarcinoma. [Journal Article]Br J Surg. 2026 Jun 16. [Online ahead of print]BJ
- CONCLUSIONS: Pathologic nodal burden and invasive tumour features were associated with distinct first recurrence patterns after iCCA resection. Combined recurrence, more common with three or more metastatic lymph nodes or microvascular invasion, was associated with worse PRS and lower receipt of curative-intent treatment. Among patients who develop recurrence, postoperatively available pathological prognostic factors may help characterise first recurrence patterns and inform risk-adapted postoperative surveillance.
