[Formula: see text] Dr. Kahn is a clinical epidemiologist and internist based at the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal, Canada, where she is the founder and director of the Centre of Excellence in Thrombosis and Anticoagulation Care. She is appointed as Professor with Tenure in the Department of Medicine, McGill University. Dr. Kahn's research interests focus primarily on clinical trials of interventions to prevent, diagnose, treat, and improve outcomes of venous thromboembolism. She holds a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Venous Thromboembolism. On April 22, 2026, at the CSCI AGM, Dr. Kahn was presented with the 2026 CSCI Distinguished Scientist Award. This article is adapted from the lecture Dr. Kahn gave at that conference. It explores how principles learned in business school-particularly entrepreneurship-can be applied to the development and sustainability of a clinical research career. Drawing on personal experience and formal training in business administration, it highlights parallels between building a research program and launching a startup venture. Key concepts, such as opportunity recognition, strategic planning, financing, marketing, iteration, and mentorship, are reframed within the context of clinical research. The article posits that adopting an entrepreneurial mindset can enhance innovation, resilience, and long-term impact in academic medicine.

The 17th annual Leaders in Medicine Research Symposium was held in person at the University of Calgary Health Sciences Centre on November 5, 2025. This event is dedicated to student research and collaboration in a range of disciplines and meant to showcase the work done by the joint degree students pursuing both graduate and medical school. The event featured a keynote address by Dr. Aravind Ganesh, titled "Finding goodness and growth while fighting dementia and stroke." Dr. Ganesh is a vascular and cognitive neurologist at the University of Calgary and an alumnus of the Leaders in Medicine program. Over 70 students presented either oral or poster presentations at the symposium, with 10 of those being oral presentations. The presentations covered a range of interdisciplinary fields, such as community health sciences, biomedical engineering, oncology, and physical medicine. Overall, the symposium highlighted the influential research being done by the Leaders in Medicine and medical students at the University of Calgary.

Canadian MD-PhD and Clinician Investigator Program (CIP) pathways both train physician-scientists, yet longitudinal data on graduate research productivity are limited.

[Formula: see text] Dr. Tayade earned a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, Masters, and PhD in Immunology from the Indian Veterinary Research Institute. He then completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Guelph. He joined Queen's University in 2009 as an Assistant Professor and is currently working as a Vice Dean, and the Director of MD PhD Program in the Faculty of Health Sciences. The central theme of Dr. Tayade's research focusses on how immune dysfunction contributes to endometriosis pathophysiology, and identifying immune-based markers for diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. Dr. Tayade has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles in journals such as JCI Insight, Journal of Immunology, American Journal of Pathology, American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Trends in Molecular Medicine. He has received competitive funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), and the Endometriosis Foundation of America; and industrial funding from Bayer, Aurinia Pharmaceutical, and AbbVie. For his outstanding contributions to research, Dr. Tayade has received numerous special recognitions. In 2012, he won both the Early Researcher Award from the Ministry of Research and Innovation, as well as the Christian J Herr Award for Outstanding Contributions in Reproductive Immunology from the American Society for Reproductive Immunology. In 2014, he earned the Mihran and Mary Basmajian Award for Research Excellence from the Queen's Faculty of Health Sciences.
