- Choosing the Right Measure of Effect: Guidance for Authors Reporting Binary Outcomes. [Journal Article]Prehosp Disaster Med. 2026 Jul 14; 41(1):e13.PD
- When reporting differences in the incidence or proportion of a binary outcome between groups, common measures include absolute risk difference, relative risk (RR), and odds ratio (OR). For studies in which the primary outcome is a difference in proportions between two groups, Prehospital and Disaster Medicine prioritizes the absolute risk difference as the principal measure of effect, accompanied…

- Non-Resuscitative Telecommunicator-Assisted First Aid: A Scoping Review. [Review]Prehosp Disaster Med. 2026 Jun 25; 41(1):e11.PD
- CONCLUSIONS: According to the review of quantitative research, non-resuscitative TAFA remains an under-explored area of prehospital medicine. Considering the paucity and the inconclusiveness of available evidence, significantly more research is required to better understand its effects and practical implications. The evidence map generated by this scoping review may assist the professional community in advancing the development of non-resuscitative TAFA.

- Capacity-Responsive COVID-19 Testing Performance in Emergency Departments: Turnaround Time Thresholds for Lateral Flow Assay and Polymerase Chain Reaction Strategies. [Journal Article]Prehosp Disaster Med. 2026 Jun 16; 41(1):e10.PD
- CONCLUSIONS: Turnaround time and its variability serve as actionable, real-time indicators of ED system capacity. Lateral flow assay performance degrades progressively under operational strain due to its reliance on frontline ED resources, whereas PCR-supported by external laboratory infrastructure-maintains more stable throughput. Capacity-contingent, adaptive testing strategies that shift toward PCR as TAT rises may enhance ED resilience, reduce LOS, and support more predictable patient flow during future outbreaks and surge conditions.

- MARS E-ECG: Prehospital Electrocardiogram Teletransmission by Firefighter Rescuers: A Retrospective Pilot Study within a Physician-Based EMS System. [Journal Article]Prehosp Disaster Med. 2026 May 28; 41(1):e9.PD
- CONCLUSIONS: Prehospital ECG teletransmission allowed early detection of cardiac abnormalities and was associated with changes in patient management in a subset of cases. Its integration in emergency workflows could enhance triage, optimize cardiology routing, and strengthen coordination between field teams and regulation centers.

- Evaluating Nursing Students' Performance and Retention of BLS/AED Knowledge and Skills One Year After Training: A Randomized Controlled Trial. [Randomized Controlled Trial]Prehosp Disaster Med. 2026 May 22; 41(1):e8.PD
- CONCLUSIONS: The current study showed that post-qualification training is needed to retain CPR knowledge and skills of nursing students, and that face-to-face and e-learning training had similar outcomes.

- Modified Rapid Needs Assessments in Nebraska (USA) Following the 2024 Arbor Day Tornado. [Journal Article]Prehosp Disaster Med. 2026 May 20; 41(1):e7.PD
- Standard Community Assessment for Public Health Emergency Response (CASPER) methods, a type of rapid needs assessment (RNA) for collecting data on household needs and impacts following emergencies, are not always suitable for rural, destroyed, or severely damaged communities, or disasters affecting small geographical areas. The objectives of this modified RNA were to: (1) identify the strengths, …

- Trends in the Application of Invasive Prehospital Interventions by Paramedics: A Six-Year Descriptive Analysis of the German Emergency Medical Services System. [Multicenter Study]Prehosp Disaster Med. 2026 May 20; 41(1):e6.PD
- CONCLUSIONS: Ten years after implementation of the EPA, invasive and pharmacological interventions performed independently by German paramedics remain relatively infrequent and largely confined to basic measures. Advanced procedures are rarely applied, reflecting continued structural characteristics of the physician-based EMS model.

- Effects of Transport Method and Transport Time on Outcomes of Trauma Patients at an Urban Level-1 Trauma Center. [Journal Article]Prehosp Disaster Med. 2026 May 12; 41(1):e5.PD
- CONCLUSIONS: Decreased injury to hospital arrival time and increased use of helicopter transport in specific situations may improve patient outcomes; this indicates the need for prospective studies.

- Effectiveness of Video Call-Assisted Versus Voice Call-Assisted Dispatcher-Guided CPR in Untrained Laypersons: A Randomized Simulation Study. [Randomized Controlled Trial]Prehosp Disaster Med. 2026 Apr 06; 41(1):e4.PD
- CONCLUSIONS: Video call-assisted dispatcher guidance incorporating simultaneous real-time visual demonstration significantly improves CPR quality in untrained lay rescuers compared with voice-only guidance. These findings suggest that structured visual modeling integrated into DA-CPR systems may enhance bystander resuscitation performance and help bridge gaps in community CPR training.

- Anatomy of a High-Quality Peer Review Report. [Journal Article]Prehosp Disaster Med. 2026 Apr 01; 41(1):e2.PD
- Peer review is an important step in supporting high-quality research publications. However, understanding the review process can be challenging for peer reviewers. The role of the peer reviewer varies from journal-to-journal. Furthermore, it is sometimes difficult for reviewers to understand how to structure and format their review. This article discusses the role of peer review in the Prehospita…

- Community Assessment of Hurricane Helene Recovery in Rural Western North Carolina. [Journal Article]Prehosp Disaster Med. 2026 Apr 01; 41(1):e3.PD
- Rural communities face unique challenges after a disaster as a result of overlapping vulnerabilities related to limited housing and transportation infrastructure, employment or income loss, and fewer emergency response and recovery resources. Hurricane Helene (Southeast Coast, USA; 2024) made landfall in Florida as a Category-4 hurricane, later impacting Western North Carolina with severe floodin…

- A Practical Approach to Minimizing Risk from Multiplicity in Statistical Reporting. [Editorial]Prehosp Disaster Med. 2025 Dec; 40(6):289-291.PD
- Unfortunately, P value multiplicity continues to be a pervasive threat to statistical validity in medical research. Performing many hypothesis tests, and treating them each as if they were a single hypothesis, leads to a dramatic increase in the risk of false research claims. This editorial describes a simple method for authors to avoid P value multiplicity while improving clarity of the findings…
