  • Standard Community Assessment for Public Health Emergency Response (CASPER) methods, a type of rapid needs assessment (RNA) for collecting data on household needs and impacts following emergencies, are not always suitable for rural, destroyed, or severely damaged communities, or disasters affecting small geographical areas. The objectives of this modified RNA were to: (1) identify the strengths, …
  • Anatomy of a High-Quality Peer Review Report. [Journal Article]
Prehosp Disaster Med. 2026 Apr 01; 41(1):e2.Franc JM, Johnson E, Cuthbertson JPD
  • Peer review is an important step in supporting high-quality research publications. However, understanding the review process can be challenging for peer reviewers. The role of the peer reviewer varies from journal-to-journal. Furthermore, it is sometimes difficult for reviewers to understand how to structure and format their review. Prehosp Disaster Med. 2026 Apr 01; 41(1):e3.Sustaining Essential and Rural Community Healthcare in Western North Carolina, Moreau L, … Horney JAPD
  • Rural communities face unique challenges after a disaster as a result of overlapping vulnerabilities related to limited housing and transportation infrastructure, employment or income loss, and fewer emergency response and recovery resources. Hurricane Helene (Southeast Coast, USA; 2024) made landfall in Florida as a Category-4 hurricane, later impacting Western North Carolina with severe floodin…

  • A Practical Approach to Minimizing Risk from Multiplicity in Statistical Reporting. [Editorial]
Prehosp Disaster Med. 2025 Dec; 40(6):289-291.Franc JMPD
  • Unfortunately, P value multiplicity continues to be a pervasive threat to statistical validity in medical research. Performing many hypothesis tests, and treating them each as if they were a single hypothesis, leads to a dramatic increase in the risk of false research claims. This editorial describes a simple method for authors to avoid P value multiplicity while improving clarity of the findings…
  • Telemedicine and Bystander CPR Rates. [Journal Article]
Prehosp Disaster Med. 2025 Dec; 40(6):307-312.Thompson SN, Brady ZT, … Winckler CPD
  • CONCLUSIONS: Using video telecommunication to perform paramedic clinical dispatch telemedicine was associated with an increased rate of pre-arrival CPR. Further research will be required to show outcome-related results to determine if dispatch video and audio telemedicine can be used to increase survival in patients suffering OHCA.
  • Temperature Monitoring in Prehospital Emergency Medical Vehicles - An Observational Study. [Journal Article]
Prehosp Disaster Med. 2025 Dec; 40(6):299-306.Maait Y, Phillipson LPD
  • CONCLUSIONS: Temperatures inside the vehicles and aircraft frequently exceed recommended limits for environmental temperatures. Indoor RRV storage provides some protection from extreme temperatures, particularly mitigating against low temperatures. The AW169 aircraft demonstrated the poorest overall temperature control. These results can be used to guide effective storage protocols and climate control strategies to ensure the integrity of therapeutic products.
  • Blackout in Spain: Urgent Analysis of Impact on Emergency Medical Services. [Journal Article]
    Prehosp Disaster Med. 2025 Dec; 40(6):319-323.Castro-Delgado R, Azeli Y, … Jiménez-Fábrega XPD
  • On April 28, 2025, a large-scale blackout affected mainland Spain and Portugal for over ten hours, severely impacting Emergency Medical Services (EMS).
