- Implementation of a chart flag to improve linkage to care after emergency department syphilis diagnosis. [Journal Article]Sex Transm Dis. 2026 Jul 14. [Online ahead of print]ST
- A retrospective review of patients requiring outreach for syphilis results after emergency department (ED) screening showed that adding a chart flag to address results at return ED visits for patients otherwise unable to be contacted resulted in a 76.6% contact rate and 93.6% linkage to care among those needing treatment.

- Sexual Behaviors of Dating Apps Users: A Descriptive Study in French Population. [Journal Article]Sex Transm Dis. 2026 Jul 06. [Online ahead of print]ST
- CONCLUSIONS: Dating app users in France are not behaviorally homogeneous. Distinct profiles reveal misalignment between exposure, prevention, and screening engagement, highlighting the need for sexual health strategies beyond exposure-based assumptions.

- Unknown Duration or Late Syphilis Cases with High Titers - North Carolina, 2015 & 2023. [Journal Article]Sex Transm Dis. 2026 Jul 01. [Online ahead of print]ST
- CONCLUSIONS: The proportion of cases with high titers increased among women, MSWO, and people who were recently incarcerated, suggesting that an increasing proportion of UDLS cases in these populations might be early syphilitic infections. Future initiatives could identify methods of improving case staging to facilitate syphilis prevention and control.

- A New Era in Treponema pallidum Cultivation: Current Advances and Future Directions. [Review]Sex Transm Dis. 2026 Aug 01; 53(8):551-557.ST
- Although long-term in vitro cultivation of the syphilis agent, Treponema pallidum subspecies pallidum, was introduced less than a decade ago, it has revolutionized and accelerated research with this difficult pathogen. Moreover, it is allowing for the exploration of topics that could not easily be pursued when propagation in the rabbit model was the only possible method for the expansion of trepo…

- Advancements in Syphilis Vaccine Development. [Journal Article]Sex Transm Dis. 2026 Aug 01; 53(8):546-550.ST
- In the last decade, we have witnessed outstanding scientific advances towards the development of a globally efficacious syphilis vaccine. This manuscript summarizes information presented at the Shanghai International Syphilis Symposium (October 20-22, 2025, Shanghai, China) during the Vaccine Development session. Dr. Lorenzo Giacani (University of Washington) moderated the session. Dr. Justin Rad…

- Potential Strategies for Participation and Community Engagement in Syphilis Clinical Research. [Journal Article]Sex Transm Dis. 2026 Aug 01; 53(8):543-545.ST
- Ethical abuses related to syphilis research have led to significant barriers to implementation of syphilis clinical trials. Insights from an expert meeting included ways to actively involve participants in clinical research, considerations for community engagement, and strategies to enhance clinical syphilis research.

- Evaluation of Partner Notification Strategies to Improve Syphilis Management in Pregnancy in Blantyre, Malawi: A Mixed-Methods Study. [Journal Article]Sex Transm Dis. 2026 Aug 01; 53(8):537-542.ST
- CONCLUSIONS: Substantial attrition occurs between notification and partner management, highlighting critical gaps in the cascade. These findings support the need for standardized PN metrics and context-specific, multicomponent interventions addressing health system barriers.

- Innovations and Challenges in Syphilis Screening and Prevention Among Men Who Have Sex With Men: A Scoping Review. [Journal Article]Sex Transm Dis. 2026 Aug 01; 53(8):529-536.ST
- Syphilis rates among men who have sex with men have risen sharply worldwide, reflecting evolving sexual networks, persistent gaps in screening and care, and behavioral changes that have accompanied the broader uptake of HIV preexposure prophylaxis. At the same time, a new generation of biomedical tools, such as doxycycline postexposure prophylaxis and rapid point-of-care diagnostics, are reshapin…

- Key Considerations in Evaluating Syphilis Therapeutics. [Journal Article]Sex Transm Dis. 2026 Aug 01; 53(8):523-528.ST
- For more than 70 years, penicillin has remained the cornerstone of treatment for syphilis. While penicillin remains highly effective, there is a pressing need to develop new therapeutic options driven both by ongoing challenges in the supply of benzathine-benzylpenicillin G (BPG) and the need for therapeutics that are more suitable for use in key populations such as pregnant women and infants. Ou…

[Journal Article]Sex Transm Dis. 2026 Aug 01; 53(8):510-517.ST
- CONCLUSIONS: Dual RDT improves detection over TT alone. The NTT band without quantitation is insufficient for treatment monitoring or infant diagnosis. Combining Dual RDT with PCR may enhance detection of active maternal infection and CS in high-burden settings.

- Estimating the Value of Novel Tests for Active Syphilis in Zimbabwe: How Much Overtreatment Can Be Avoided? [Journal Article]Sex Transm Dis. 2026 Aug 01; 53(8):500-509.ST
- CONCLUSIONS: Even under the conservative assumption that current syndromic management and screening practices achieve high syphilis treatment rates among care-seeking individuals, introducing POC diagnostics for active syphilis could substantially reduce overtreatment while maintaining treatment of individuals with active infection. Reductions in unnecessary treatment alone may be cost-saving at low test prices, even without accounting for downstream health outcomes. This analysis does not model the impact of improved diagnostics on transmission dynamics, congenital syphilis burden, or other health outcomes; studies that quantify these additional benefits are needed to inform a full economic evaluation.
