  • Neurologic Presentations of Pediatric Intussusception Lead to Diagnostic Delay and Increased Need for Surgery. [Review]
Am Surg. 2026 May 06; :31348261448893. [Online ahead of print]Seçilmiş Y, Gümüştekin Bilgin S, Doğan ABAS
  • BackgroundNeurological presentations of pediatric intussusception lead to delayed diagnosis, higher rates of surgical intervention, and worse outcomes compared with classic presentations. These atypical manifestations, including lethargy, altered mental status, and rarely movement disorders, may predominate and redirect evaluation toward primary neurological etiologies, delaying recognition of th…
  • Acute Drug-Induced Dystonia in Children: Risk Factors, Clinical Characteristics, and Emergency Management. [Journal Article]
Pediatr Emerg Care. 2026 Apr 30. [Online ahead of print]Akkaya B, Erdem FŞ, … Tuygun NPE
  • CONCLUSIONS: Antipsychotics and antiemetics are the main triggers of drug-induced acute dystonia in children. Dystonia usually appears within the first 72 hours after starting the drug. It can develop even at therapeutic doses. Dystonias associated with antiemetic drugs often show focal or segmental distribution. Parenteral biperiden is a fast and effective treatment option. Acute dystonia can mimic serious etiologies in the emergency department. Obtaining a detailed drug history can facilitate the diagnostic process.
  • Consensus Molecules Associated with Parkinson's Disease. [Review]
    Neurol Int. 2026 Jan 27; 18(2).Eyal S, Alfasi S, … Samson AONI
  • Parkinson's disease (PD) has been associated with some types of food and drugs. Here, we query PubMed for the association of PD with foods and drugs, using a list of 217,776 compounds derived from the Human Metabolome Database (HMDB). To calculate associations, a Python script was developed to query PubMed for co-citations of PD with each compound, and adjust this count for compound abundance. No…
  • Chronic effects of traumatic brain injury and the impact of biperiden treatment in a male rat model. [Journal Article]
Exp Neurol. 2026 Apr; 398:115626.Sanabria V, Braga MB, … Longo BMEN
  • Traumatic brain injury (TBI) disrupts brain function and may lead to post-traumatic epilepsy (PTE), a long-term complication. Anticholinergic drugs, such as biperiden, have shown potential in modulating neural plasticity. This study evaluated whether biperiden treatment influences motor and cognitive recovery, seizure susceptibility, and neurovascular and inflammatory responses in rats subjected …
  • Effects of acute biperiden treatment following traumatic brain injury in male rats. [Journal Article]
    Sci Rep. 2025 Dec 29; 15(1):44775.Braga MB, Sanabria V, … Longo BMSR
  • Traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality, with no effective treatments available. Biperiden, a muscarinic receptor antagonist, has demonstrated beneficial effects by modulating neural plasticity and reducing excitotoxicity. This study investigated the acute impact of cellular and structural changes in a moderate TBI model using lateral fluid percussion injur…
  • Parkinson disease treatments on national essential medicines lists, African Region. [Journal Article]
    Bull World Health Organ. 2025 Oct 01; 103(10):626-634.Fothergill-Misbah N, Cataldi R, … Dua TBW
  • The prevalence of Parkinson disease is increasing globally. Despite the existence of effective and affordable medicines for Parkinson disease, access to these medicines is limited in the World Health Organization (WHO) African Region. Several factors influence accessibility, including lack of prioritization of Parkinson disease, shortage of a trained health workforce, barriers to health financing…
  • Drugs and Lactation Database (LactMed®): Biperiden [BOOK]
Drugs and Lactation Database (LactMed®). National Institute of Child Health and Human Development: Bethesda (MD).BOOK
  • Biperiden is no longer marketed in the United States. No information is available on the use of biperiden during breastfeeding. Long-term use of biperiden might reduce milk production or milk letdown, but a single dose is not likely to interfere with breastfeeding. During long-term use, observe for signs of decreased lactation (e.g., insatiety, poor weight gain).
  • The effect of biperiden on episodic memory: Testing the serial position effect. [Randomized Controlled Trial]
    Neurobiol Learn Mem. 2025 Jul; 220:108065.Blokland A, Borghans L, … Sambeth ANL
  • Biperiden (BIP), a muscarinic type 1 (M1) receptor antagonist, has been proposed as a pharmacological model for episodic memory impairment in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and early stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Understanding the effects of BIP on memory could also be relevant for the development of M1 agonists to improve memory. In this study, we specifically examined how BIP affected th…
  • Uncommon Extrapyramidal Reaction to Ondansetron. [Case Reports]
Cureus. 2025 Mar; 17(3):e80362.Dias CS, Moreira C, … Santos MC
  • We describe the case of a 77-year-old man, who was admitted for the initiation of chemotherapy for stage IV small cell lung cancer without cerebral metastases. On the first day post-admission, the patient developed altered mental status and right-sided weakness after premedication with ondansetron and dexamethasone. Symptoms resolved spontaneously within 90 minutes. An ischemic event was suspecte…
  • Network based approach for drug target identification in early onset Parkinson's disease. [Journal Article]
    Sci Rep. 2025 Mar 27; 15(1):10563.Dey A, Chakraborty M, … Bandyopadhyay SSR
  • Despite the abundance of large-scale molecular and drug-response data, current research on early-onset Parkinson's disease (EOPD) markers often lacks mechanistic interpretations of drug-gene relationships, limiting our understanding of how drugs exert their therapeutic effects. While existing studies provide valuable EOPD markers, the mechanisms by which targeted drugs act remain poorly understoo…
  • Prolonged extrapyramidal syndrome due to metoclopramide overdose: a rare case report. [Case Reports]
Oxf Med Case Reports. 2025 Feb; 2025(2):omae217.Malakian A, Omrani A, … Zakariaei ZOM
  • Metoclopramide is a useful antiemetic drug that is widely used in medical emergencies. This drug can cause extrapyramidal side effects that are worrying. An 18-year-old girl student unintentionally consumed a large dose (60 mg) of metoclopramide, exceeding the recommended therapeutic dose, for the management of nausea and vomiting. Approximately six hours after the ingestion of the medication, sh…
  • Bilingual side effect: a case of foreign language syndrome following chlorpromazine-induced neuroleptic malignant syndrome. [Journal Article]
Ann Gen Psychiatry. 2025 Jan 02; 24(1):1.Andric Petrovic S, Maric NPAG
  • CONCLUSIONS: Foreign language syndrome is an exceptionally rare occurrence, with only nine documented cases to date, all involving male patients. This case presents a novel instance of foreign language syndrome in the context of NMS in a male patient, providing insight into the potential sex-specific mechanisms underlying this rare phenomenon. This case adds valuable evidence to the understanding of the clinical spectrum of NMS and highlights the importance of recognizing atypical presentations in managing patients with neuropsychiatric conditions.
