- Affordability Analysis of Selected Medicines in Iran: A National Cross-sectional Survey Using World Health Organization Out-of-Pocket Methodology. [Journal Article]Iran J Pharm Res. 2026 Jan-Dec; 25(1):e163774.IJ
- CONCLUSIONS: This research reveals high OOP spending for Iranian patients, with considerable drug-specific heterogeneity. The implications suggest that policy action in terms of price reform and wider insurance coverage is needed to minimize financial burden and ensure access to medicines. Further studies are required to determine the impact of high OOP spending on patient adherence and to inform specific health policies in Iran and beyond.

- Serum chloride and the response to hydrochlorothiazide in patients with acute heart failure: a post-hoc analysis from the CLOROTIC trial. [Journal Article]Rev Esp Cardiol (Engl Ed). 2026 May 18. [Online ahead of print]RE
- CONCLUSIONS: In patients with AHF, the addition of hydrochlorothiazide to loop diuretics enhances decongestion regardless of the baseline serum chloride. (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT01647932; EudraCT Number: 2013-001852-36).

- Spironolactone therapy in resistant hypertension comorbid with mild obstructive sleep apnea: A retrospective cohort study. [Journal Article]Medicine (Baltimore). 2026 May 15; 105(20):e48755.M
- Mild obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is often underdiagnosed but contributes to treatment-resistant hypertension through oxygen deprivation and activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. Spironolactone, an aldosterone antagonist, may help manage both hypertension and OSA-related symptoms. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of spironolactone in patients with mild O…

- Serum peptidomic profiling and peptide mass fingerprinting reveal signatures associated with peroxisomal and mitochondrial pathways in MMVD-associated cardiorenal syndrome in dogs. [Journal Article]PLoS One. 2026; 21(5):e0348233.Plos
- Cardiorenal syndrome in dogs, particularly those with myxomatous mitral valve degeneration (MMVD), involves complex neurohormonal interactions, yet molecular mechanisms linking heart and kidney dysfunction remain poorly understood. This study aimed to identify serum peptide and protein signatures that differentiate disease stages and clarify pathophysiology. We hypothesized that alterations in th…

- Post-Approval Pediatric Use of Drugs Granted Waivers from Pediatric Testing. [Journal Article]Clin Pharmacol Ther. 2026 May 15. [Online ahead of print]CP
- The Pediatric Research Equity Act mandates new drugs be tested in children before Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval, though roughly one-fifth of these drugs are granted complete waivers from pediatric testing. With the high prevalence of these waivers, US children may be at risk of being treated by drugs without pediatric testing (and therefore with unclear risk-benefit profiles). We ev…

- Spironolactone and clinical outcomes in patients with alcohol use disorder and comorbid hypertension: a target trial emulation study. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Patients prescribed spironolactone were more likely to experience AUD remission and less likely to experience alcohol intoxication compared with propensity score-matched controls. These real-world findings further support the potential of spironolactone as a new pharmacotherapy for AUD and underscore the need for further testing in randomized controlled trials.

- Antihypertensive Combinations Modify Cardiovascular Risk Factor Importance: A Machine Learning Analysis of the ACCOMPLISH Trial. [Randomized Controlled Trial]J Clin Hypertens (Greenwich). 2026 May; 28(5):e70278.JC
- Results from the ACCOMPLISH (Avoiding Cardiovascular Events through COMbination Therapy in Patients LIving with Systolic Hypertension) trial suggest that combining benazepril with amlodipine, rather than hydrochlorothiazide, provides superior cardiovascular protection potentially in a BP-independent manner. We employed random survival forest, a powerful machine learning approach, to compare the r…

- Mortality and Heart Failure Hospitalization in Patients with HFpEF on Mineralocorticoid Receptor Antagonists: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis. [Review]Am J Cardiol. 2026 May 12. [Online ahead of print]AJ
- Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is highly prevalent and associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. The clinical benefit of mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist (MRA) therapy in this population remains uncertain. A meta-analysis was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, searching PubMed, Embase, and Scopus from inception through the most recent …

- Innovative valsartan-loaded self-nanoemulsifying drug delivery system combat liver inflammation and oxidative stress in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. [Journal Article]
- Diabetes-induced liver damage is a significant complication of hyperglycemia, which results in oxidative stress, inflammation, and fibrosis. Conventional treatment strategies remain limited, necessitating novel therapeutic approaches. This study evaluates the hepatoprotective effects of valsartan-loaded self-nanoemulsifying drug delivery system (SNEDDS) in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced hyperglycem…

- Cognitive decline is a common occurrence in elderly individuals, leading to social issues, health concerns, and placing pressure on the healthcare system. Several factors can affect cognitive function, and medication is one of the most important factors for the elderly. Thus, understanding the impact of medications on cognitive decline in the elderly is crucial. This study aimed to investigate th…

- Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) as well as current-use pesticides (CUPs) are considered to be contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), but there is limited information that exists about their occurrence and impact in the marine environment. A database of these CECs has been created as an overview of their occurrence and distribution in European marine waters by the ICES Marine …

- Pro-inflammatory roles of ultraviolet radiation in cutaneous photocarcinogenesis. [Review]Photochem Photobiol. 2026 May 08. [Online ahead of print]PP
- Previously, it was thought that ultraviolet radiation (UV) carcinogenesis was caused by accumulation of mutations related to cancer, including oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes. These genetic changes found in skin cancers are considered to be induced by UV, based on the findings that "UV-signature mutations" are predominant. However, recent findings revealed that UV carcinogenesis includes a m…

- Outpatient drug therapy for children with heart disease in Switzerland: a survey. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: The drugs used to treat heart failure, arrhythmia, and thromboembolism in Switzerland largely reflect current international recommendations. Nevertheless, novel drugs are rarely used. In addition to the lack of large randomized controlled drug trials in children, important obstacles are lack of authorization, lack of reimbursement, and lack of suitable formulations. These issues should be addressed by both the industry and healthcare providers to continuously improve drug therapy for children with heart disease.
