  • Human leukocyte extract enhances albendazole efficacy against Echinococcus multilocularis in mice by reducing parasitic microRNAs, myeloid and lymphoid immunosuppressive cells. [Journal Article]

  • CONCLUSIONS: HLE as adjuvant enhanced albendazole efficacy against Echinococcus multilocularis infection in mice via reduction of T regulatoty type of response and MDSC expansion and shift of systemic and local immunity toward balanced Th1/Th2- biased profiles. The marked reduction in circulating parasite-derived miRNAs identifies a previously unrecognised mechanism that may contribute to the immunomodulatory effects of HLE and highlights these molecules as potential biomarkers of therapeutic response. Collectively, these results propose HLE as a promising adjunct immunotherapeutic candidate capable of counteracting parasite-induced immunosuppression and potentiating benzimidazole chemotherapy.
  • What's Old Is New: Echinococcus and Trypanosoma in Companion Animals. [Review]

  • Trypanosoma cruzi, the protozoan etiologic agent of Chagas disease, was first described in 1909 by Carlos Chagas and remains one of the most important zoonotic parasitic pathogens in the Americas. Echinococcus granulosus and Echinococcus multilocularis are emerging zoonotic tapeworms and the causative agents of cystic echinococcosis and alveolar echinococcosis, respectively. Collectively, echinoc…

  • Echinococcosis is a chronic parasitic disease and a serious zoonotic infection caused by the adult or larval stages of Echinococcus tapeworms. The transmission of Echinococcosis depends on carnivores as definitive hosts and various animals as intermediate hosts. According to current epidemiological reports, the liver is the most commonly affected organ. Clinically, Hepatic Echinococcosis is class…
  • Long-Term Outcomes After Hepatectomy for Alveolar Echinococcosis in Immunosuppressed Patients. [Journal Article]
    Pathogens. 2026 Jul 19; 15(7).Rrupa D, Kaiser C, … Joliat GRP
  • Long-term outcomes after hepatectomy for alveolar echinococcosis (AE) in immunosuppressed patients remain poorly investigated. This study evaluated recurrence rates and recurrence-free/overall survivals (RFS/OS) after AE resection in immunocompromised and immunocompetent patients. Consecutive patients operated for liver AE in two university hospitals were retrospectively collected (2000-2021). Im…
  • Echinococcus species in North America: an increasing concern for domestic animals, wildlife, and humans. [Journal Article]

  • Echinococcus multilocularis and Echinococcus canadensis (genotypes G8 and G10) are emerging parasites of concern across North America. Historically confined to northern and western regions, both species have been detected with increasing frequency in new geographic areas in wildlife, domestic dogs, and humans. Both Echinococcus spp have indirect life cycles involving carnivore definitive hosts (d…
