- Excellent response to benzocaine spray in an 8-year-old African female with idiopathic palato-pharyngo-laryngeal myoclonus: a case report. [Journal Article]J Med Case Rep. 2026 May 06. [Online ahead of print]JM
- CONCLUSIONS: All cases of palatal myoclonus (PM) or PPLM should be subjected to a thorough neurological evaluation to exclude any lesional etiologies associated with PPLM. While the prognosis for idiopathic PPLM is generally benign, the notable complete response of our patient to benzocaine spray merits further discussion. Additionally, further research is essential to elucidate the underlying mechanisms and to develop effective management strategies.

- Drug-induced methemoglobinemia in a child with comorbidity and polypragmasia: Case report. [Journal Article]Int J Risk Saf Med. 2026 Apr 17; :9246479251405948. [Online ahead of print]IJ
- Background: The article describes a case of methemoglobinemia in a 4-year-old child with nephrotic syndrome with simultaneous use of therapeutic doses of three drugs that cause methemoglobinemia: lidocaine (topically), benzocaine (topically), and co-trimoxazole (systemically). An increase in the level of methemoglobin in the blood to 47.6% led to the development of respiratory failure. To correct…

- Over-the-Counter Benzocaine Gel as a Cause of Methemoglobinemia: A Case Report. [Case Reports]Cureus. 2026 Mar; 18(3):e104949.C
- Methemoglobinemia is a rare, potentially life-threatening disorder caused by oxidation of hemoglobin iron from the ferric (Fe[3+]) to the ferrous (Fe[2+]) state, impairing oxygen delivery to tissues. Although most cases of methemoglobinemia that are documented are reported after procedural use of benzocaine sprays, those occurring from over-the-counter benzocaine gel are uncommon and often underr…

- Comparative Analysis of Topical vs. Systemic Analgesics for Pain Control During Initial Orthodontic Alignment. [Journal Article]J Pharm Bioallied Sci. 2026; 18(1):25-27.JP
- CONCLUSIONS: While systemic ibuprofen remains superior for managing deep periodontal pain associated with initial alignment, topical benzocaine provides significant pain reduction compared to placebo and serves as a viable alternative for patients contraindicated for systemic NSAIDs.

- Analysis of cocaine samples from amnesty bins located at a major UK summer music festival over a 10-year period using both low-field benchtop NMR (60 MHz) and medium-field NMR (400 MHz) for comparison. [Journal Article]Forensic Sci Int. 2026 Mar 07; 384:112902. [Online ahead of print]FS
- Cocaine is the second most popular traditional illicit drug in the European Union, after cannabis, and its high potential for addiction makes it a significant public health concern. Therefore, monitoring trends in the content and purity of street samples can provide valuable information to support harm reduction strategies. This study analysed a selection of 160 street cocaine samples collected a…

- Risk-Stratified Use of Topical and Infiltrative Local Anesthetics in High-Risk Dermatologic Surgery. [Journal Article]J Surg Res (Houst). 2026; 9(1):54-75.JS
- Local anesthetics are fundamental to dermatologic practice, yet their safety profile requires nuanced understanding in high-risk contexts including end-arterial sites, barrier-compromised skin, and scenarios predisposing to systemic toxicity. This narrative review synthesizes contemporary evidence across these three interacting domains to provide an integrated, risk-stratified framework for clini…

- Lidocaine Injection Provides Superior Pain Relief Compared to 10-Minute BLT Topical Numbing in Women Undergoing Cannula-Based Aesthetic Procedures. [Case Reports]Aesthet Surg J Open Forum. 2026; 8:ojag005.AS
- Despite the growing popularity of aesthetic procedures, procedural pain remains a major concern among patients. Topical numbing cream and local anesthetic injection are widely used to manage discomfort and reduce pain; however, their relative effectiveness in cannula-based facial treatments remains a subject of ongoing debate. The aim of the study was to compare the anesthetic efficacy of BLT cre…

- Evolving Analytical Techniques for the Determination of Benzocaine and Its Metabolites: A Critical Review. [Review]Crit Rev Anal Chem. 2026 Mar 03; :1-22. [Online ahead of print]CR
- Benzocaine (BC) (ethyl 4-aminobenzoate) is an ester-type local anesthetic extensively used in topical, oral, and dermatological formulations for rapid, localized pain relief. Despite its widespread application, accurate quantification remains challenging due to poor aqueous solubility, susceptibility to hydrolysis into para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), and the risk of methemoglobinemia associated wi…

- Microneedle patch-enhanced palatal anesthesia with benzocaine: Efficacy and safety in a randomized double-blind crossover trial. [Randomized Controlled Trial]Drug Discov Ther. 2026 Mar 04; 20(1):63-70.DD
- Needle-insertion pain during dental local anesthesia remains one of the strongest triggers of dental anxiety. Conventional topical anesthetics show limited penetration through the thick palatal mucosa and often provide insufficient suppression of insertion pain. Microneedle (MN) patches have emerged as a minimally invasive drug-delivery platform capable of enhancing transmucosal permeability and …

- Abstracts: Background: Hair dye-related allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is a common problem among both consumers and professionals. The main sensitizers are aromatic amines such as para-phenylenediamine (PPD) and toluene-2,5-diamine (TDA), which can also cross-react with chemically related compounds. Objective: To analyze patch-test results from patients with suspected hair dye-related ACD, focu…

- Role of the lipid matrix in the action of local anesthetics. [Review]Biochim Biophys Acta Biomembr. 2026 Apr; 1868(2):184504.BB
- The binding of local anesthetics (LAs) to cell membranes is required for LAs to reach the target ion channels, but lipid interactions may also play a role in a purely membrane-mediated mode of activity. Here, we used solid-state NMR and further biophysical techniques to characterize the effect of six LAs covering a wide range of structures and properties (benzocaine, bupivacaine, mepivacaine, lid…
