- Comparative systematic review of coronary artery calcium scoring guidelines: CSANZ versus ACC/AHA and ESC recommendations. [Review]Intern Med J. 2026 May 20. [Online ahead of print]IM
- Coronary artery calcium (CAC) scoring is increasingly recognised as a non-invasive tool to refine cardiovascular risk assessment, particularly in asymptomatic individuals at intermediate risk. However, its clinical use remains inconsistent, shaped by varying recommendations across international and local guidelines. This systematic review compares the major guideline documents from the Cardiac So…

- Oxidative dyslipidemia in early pregnancy: integrating atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) and uric acid (UA) to refine preeclampsia risk stratification. [Journal Article]Front Pharmacol. 2026; 17:1792375.FP
- Preeclampsia represents an unmasking of underlying vascular and metabolic vulnerability during the physiologic stress of pregnancy. Current first-trimester screening relies heavily on body mass index which incompletely captures qualitative metabolic dysfunction, particularly in non-obese women. In this narrative perspective, we examine the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP; log10[TG/HDL-C]), which…

- Visual-acoustic thigmotaxis in zebrafish larvae: a high throughput NAM for neurotoxicity assessment. [Journal Article]Front Toxicol. 2026; 8:1753174.FT
- Current regulatory neurotoxicity guidelines do not include behavioral endpoints that capture stress-related responses. Zebrafish larvae prior to independent feeding offer a promising vertebrate model for developing new approach methodologies (NAMs) because they combine neurobiological relevance with high-throughput potential. In this study, we developed and evaluated a larval thigmotaxis assay to…

- Brain activity as a candidate biomarker for personalised caffeine treatment in premature neonates. [Journal Article]Front Pediatr. 2026; 14:1792897.FP
- CONCLUSIONS: These findings provide initial evidence to indicate that brain age is a candidate biomarker for personalised caffeine treatment in preterm infants.

- Cherry microbiota and metabolites with planting altitude of Coffea arabica in Baoshan of China. [Journal Article]Front Nutr. 2026; 13:1817512.FN
- The planting altitude of coffee is one of the important influencing factors on coffee quality. The effects of four planting altitudes (1,000 m, AT1; 1,200 m, AT2; 1,400 m, AT3; and 1,600 m, AT4) on the microorganism community and the related metabolites in Coffea arabica cherries were investigated using Illumina-based amplicon sequencing and UPLC-MS/MS technologies, respectively. At tha same time…

- Efficacy and safety of Serenoa repens in benign prostatic disorders: a systematic review of recent clinical evidence. [Review]Drugs Context. 2026; 15.DC
- This systematic review assessed the potential effectiveness and safety of Serenoa repens (saw palmetto) for benign prostatic disorders, mainly benign prostatic hyperplasia and associated lower urinary tract symptoms. Following PRISMA guidance (PROSPERO: CRD420251032255), we searched PubMed, Cochrane and ScienceDirect for human studies from January 2020 to May 2025. Sixteen studies (>3000 particip…

- Changing Aetiology of Perforated Peptic Ulcers: Rising Impact of Non-Steroidal-Anti-Inflammatories in Western Australia. [Journal Article]ANZ J Surg. 2026 May 19. [Online ahead of print]AJ
- CONCLUSIONS: NSAID/Aspirin use may be surpassing H. pylori as the main cause of perforated PUD in Western Australia, mirroring global patterns. H. pylori remains important but identifying NSAID use as a modifiable risk and standardising testing, eradication, and follow-up-including endoscopy-are needed. These findings should guide clinical practice for post-operative and preventive care.

- Rethinking Preeclampsia: How Placental Growth Factor (PlGF) Is Transforming Diagnosis and Management. [Review]J Obstet Gynaecol Can. 2026 May 18; :103396. [Online ahead of print]JO
- Preeclampsia is a severe pregnancy complication affecting pregnant people, their babies, and families. It remains a leading global cause of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. Our understanding of this disease continues to evolve, with opportunities for improved preeclampsia prediction, diagnosis, and management. This review outlines how placental growth factor (PlGF) could help clinician…

- Rates of New-Onset Postoperative Heart Failure Among Type 2 Diabetics Who Use Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs for Total Hip Arthroplasty. [Journal Article]J Arthroplasty. 2026 May 18. [Online ahead of print]JA
- CONCLUSIONS: Patients who have T2DM experience a higher incidence of new-onset postoperative HF compared to non-diabetics following perioperative selective NSAID use for THA. Additionally, T2DM patients developed HF at a greater rate when treated with perioperative celecoxib versus meloxicam. Given that both agents were associated with HF events in this high-risk population, caution is warranted when prescribing selective NSAIDs in T2DM patients undergoing THA. Risk-benefit considerations and individualized perioperative pain management strategies should be carefully considered.

- CONCLUSIONS: When providing sleep hygiene education for chronic insomnia, it may be more helpful to identify patient-specific issues and focus on those, rather than attempting to address every possible topic.

- The relationships among nutrition, body composition, muscle strength and physical performance in patients with acromegaly. [Journal Article]Arch Endocrinol Metab. 2026 Aug 01; 70(4).AE
- CONCLUSIONS: Patients with acromegaly exhibited increased muscle mass, but their functional capacity were compromised, potentially due to alterations in muscle composition. The intake of nutrients such as selenium, β-carotene, flavonoids, vitamin E and niacin, may improve physical performance and muscle strength.

- Aspirin vs clopidogrel in chronic coronary syndromes: a meta-analysis of ethnic differences. [Journal Article]Eur Heart J. 2026 May 19. [Online ahead of print]EH
- CONCLUSIONS: In patients with CCS, the overall body of evidence suggests improved outcomes with clopidogrel compared with aspirin, without an apparent effect on mortality. However, a high level of confidence in these findings is currently limited to East Asian populations, and additional evidence is needed to clarify their applicability to non-East Asian patients.

- Chlorogenic acids and caffeine in commercial green coffee bean extract supplements: quantitative assessment and evidence of mislabelling. [Journal Article]Food Addit Contam Part A Chem Anal Control Expo Risk Assess. 2026 Jun; 43(6):806-818.FA
- Green coffee bean extract (GCBE) supplements are widely marketed for weight management, primarily due to their chlorogenic acids (CGAs) and caffeine content. This study evaluated the authenticity and quality of 23 commercial GCBE products by quantifying three major CGA isomers (3-CQA, 4-CQA and 5-CQA) and caffeine using HPLC-DAD. The CGA content ranged from non-detectable to 31.15%, with 5-CQA be…
