- Cephalosporin use and patient outcomes following removal of penicillin-cephalosporin cross-reactivity alerts from the electronic health record. [Journal Article]Antimicrob Agents Chemother. 2026 May 15; :e0182025. [Online ahead of print]AA
- Studies have shown there is minimal risk of cephalosporin cross-reactivity with penicillin (PCN), though avoidance in practice still occurs. Avoidance of cephalosporins due to reported PCN allergies can result in negative clinical outcomes. Removal of cross-reactivity alerts from the electronic health record (EHR) may increase cephalosporin utilization. The objective of this study was to evaluate…

- Ceftriaxone for methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus bloodstream infections is associated with increased short-term mortality: a systematic review and meta-analysis. [Systematic Review]Ann Med. 2026 Dec; 58(1):2667672.AM
- CONCLUSIONS: Given the availability of various alternatives and the consistent short-term mortality signal observed, routine use of ceftriaxone for MSSA-BSIs, especially as initial therapy, is not supported by current evidence. Only novel findings from randomized studies may change the place in therapy of the drug in this context.

- Effect of flushing technique on residual anaesthetic drug content in syringes. [Journal Article]Singapore Med J. 2026 May 08. [Online ahead of print]SM
- CONCLUSIONS: A minimum of two 50% syringe volume flushes with normal saline or water for injection ensured complete removal of propofol, cefazolin and morphine, regardless of syringe size. This may enable safer single-patient syringe reuse during anaesthesia, reducing syringe use, lowering costs and promoting environmental sustainability.

- Assessment of antibiotic prophylaxis post cardiac implantable electronic device implantation: a retrospective cohort study. [Journal Article]BMC Infect Dis. 2026 May 08. [Online ahead of print]BI
- CONCLUSIONS: Prophylactic antibiotics for 7 days or less, or a single agent, was not associated with a detectable difference in infection rates. A larger prospective study including patients not receiving prophylactic antibiotics post-implantation is needed to distinguish infection rates between those who did and did not receive them.

- Cefazolin versus Alternative Antibiotics for Surgical Prophylaxis in Children With a Reported Penicillin Allergy. [Journal Article]J Surg Res. 2026 May 05; 323:44-47. [Online ahead of print]JS
- CONCLUSIONS: Cefazolin drug reactions in children are rare, while reactions to alternatives are more common. We suggest cefazolin should be administered to all children preoperatively, when indicated, regardless of allergy unless the allergy is to cefazolin itself.

- Co-existence of blaCTX-M and mcr-1 in avian pathogenic Escherichia coli in Southern Xinjiang: current status and antimicrobial resistance characteristics. [Journal Article]
- Extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) constitute one of the principal mechanisms underlying multidrug resistance (MDR) in avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC). The coexistence of ESBL-encoding genes, particularly blaCTX-M, together with the plasmid-mediated colistin resistance gene mcr-1 in APEC raises serious concern, as it undermines the effectiveness of third-generation cephalosporins and…

- Optimal management of pregnancies presenting with membrane prolapse. [Review]J Perinat Med. 2026 May 07. [Online ahead of print]JP
- CONCLUSIONS: Emergency cerclage achieves fetal survival rates of approximately 73 % in carefully selected patients presenting between 16 and 24 weeks with cervical dilation of 2-4 cm and absence of intraamniotic infection. Amniocentesis is critical when cervical dilation exceeds 2-3 cm, as infection represents the strongest predictor of treatment failure. Outcomes vary significantly based on clinical presentation, with negative amniocentesis associated with 70-80 % survival vs. 20-30 % with positive results.Future research priorities include prospective randomized trials comparing emergency cerclage to expectant management, validation of biomarkers predicting infection and treatment success, optimization of perioperative protocols, and further development of innovative therapeutic strategies such as anti-inflammatory agents.

- Concomitant osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture and infectious spondylitis in a patient with herpes zoster: A case report. [Case Reports]Medicine (Baltimore). 2026 Apr 24; 105(17):e48493.M
- CONCLUSIONS: This case underscores the importance of a comprehensive clinical assessment in older patients, even when a diagnosis of herpes zoster is apparent. Persistent or atypical symptoms warrant further evaluation to exclude concurrent diseases. Furthermore, vertebroplasty can be safely performed in select patients with infectious spondylitis following adequate antibiotic therapy, leading to pain reduction. A multidisciplinary, individualized approach is essential to achieve optimal outcomes in patients with complex spinal pathologies.
