- Hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia presenting with refractory gastrointestinal bleeding. [Case Reports]BMJ Case Rep. 2026 Aug 18; 19(8).BC
- A man in his 20s presented with progressive fatigue and melena, with a history of recurrent epistaxis since adolescence and a positive family history. Evaluation revealed severe iron-deficiency anaemia (haemoglobin 27 g/L) with persistently positive faecal occult blood. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy demonstrated multiple bleeding telangiectasias in the stomach and duodenum. Cross-sectional ima…

- The hidden vulnerability: heavy and persistent burden of dietary iron deficiency among women and children in China, India and globally based on the global burden of disease 2021. [Journal Article]Ann Med. 2026 Dec; 58(1):2719052.AM
- CONCLUSIONS: The study indicates that while global and China's DID burdens have improved since 1990, challenges persist in India. India requires interventions to mitigate DID burden in high-risk groups.

- Beyond erythropoiesis-stimulating agents: The evolving role of hypoxia-inducible factor stabilizers in anemia of chronic kidney disease. [Journal Article]Clin Nephrol. 2026 Aug 18. [Online ahead of print]CN
- Anemia is one of the most common complications affecting individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD). It is driven primarily by relative erythropoietin (EPO) deficiency, chronic inflammation, and altered iron metabolism. Emerging therapies, known as hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl hydroxylase inhibitors (HIF-PHIs), offer a novel oral treatment approach by stabilizing intracellular HIF levels to…

- Prevalence and risk factors of nutritional anaemia among adolescents in India: a systematic review with meta-analysis of prevalence. [Systematic Review]Ann Med. 2026 Dec; 58(1):2694147.AM
- CONCLUSIONS: Nutritional anaemia impacts more than half of Indian adolescents, with notable regional and gender differences. Its complex nutritional, socioeconomic, and behavioural causes demand targeted, context-specific interventions to enhance adolescent health nationwide.

- GeneReviews®: Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa [BOOK]GeneReviews®. University of Washington, Seattle: Seattle (WA).BOOK
- Dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (DEB) is characterized by skin fragility manifested by blistering and erosions with minimal trauma. Many individuals also have dystrophic or absent nails. DEB is divided into two major types depending on inheritance pattern: recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB) and dominant dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (DDEB). Clinical findings in severe RDEB incl…
- [Clinical analysis of 4 cases of pediatric collagenous gastritis]. [Case Reports]Zhongguo Dang Dai Er Ke Za Zhi. 2026 Aug 15; 28(8):1019-1024.ZD
- The clinical data of 4 pediatric patients with collagenous gastritis (CG) diagnosed at the Department of Pediatrics of Peking University Third Hospital between January 2021 and October 2025 were retrospectively analyzed. The median age at onset was 10.8 years. All patients presented with iron-deficiency anemia, and two also experienced abdominal pain. Gastroscopy in all cases revealed a nodular g…

- Multivariate patterns of trace elements in anemia during pregnancy: Insights from principal component analysis in a hospital-based study from North India. [Journal Article]Int J Gynaecol Obstet. 2026 Aug 17. [Online ahead of print]IJ
- CONCLUSIONS: Iron deficiency remains the predominant cause of anemia in pregnancy. However, PCA underscores the collective influence of trace element clusters, highlighting potential secondary modulators of anemia risk. Broader micronutrient-based strategies, alongside iron supplementation, might improve maternal anemia outcomes in India.

- Neuroendocrine Tumor of Unknown Origin Leading to the Diagnosis of Advanced Celiac Disease: A Case Report Exploring a Possible Association. [Case Reports]
- CONCLUSIONS: This case highlights the possible rare coexistence of CD with an atypical neoplastic process, particularly in patients presenting with unexplained iron-deficiency anemia. While CD is associated with an increased risk of certain rare gastrointestinal malignancies, its relationship with NETs remains poorly defined. Larger studies are needed to further explore any potential association between CD and NETs.

- Recurrent Severe Iron Deficiency Anemia Caused by a Small Bowel Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor in a 90-Year-Old Woman: A Case Report. [Case Reports]
- Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is common in older adults, and gastrointestinal bleeding is an important cause that should be investigated. However, identifying the bleeding source can be challenging when upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy findings are negative. We report the case of a 90-year-old woman who presented with anorexia, general fatigue, and dizziness and was found to have severe …

- Anesthesia Management of Gestational Trophoblastic Disease With Massive Hemorrhage: A Case Report. [Case Reports]
- This case describes a 40-year-old woman with gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD) who presented with vaginal bleeding, iron deficiency anemia, and a markedly elevated beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG) of 1,889,800 mIU/mL. Transabdominal ultrasound revealed retained products of conception and GTD. The patient had experienced a failed pregnancy two months prior to presentation. She requi…

- Call to action: identifying an underlying bleeding disorder in adolescents with heavy menstrual bleeding. [Review]
- Heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) is prevalent, with consequences impacting quality of life from adolescence through adulthood. Several clinical tools have been developed to aid in HMB diagnosis, which must be coupled with a detailed menstrual history. The diagnosis of HMB should be accompanied by evaluation of coexisting iron deficiency or iron deficiency anemia with appropriate treatment, and impo…

- Efficacy and safety of probiotics in the treatment of iron deficiency anemia in Chinese children: a systematic review and meta-analysis. [Systematic Review]
- CONCLUSIONS: Probiotics may improve anemia-related parameters and iron metabolism in Chinese children with IDA. However, the pooled increase in Hb remains below the minimal clinically important difference, and evidence on total adverse events remains inconclusive. Therefore, probiotics should be considered as an adjunct to oral iron supplementation rather than a standalone intervention. These findings should be interpreted with caution due to potential biases and the inclusion of only Chinese children.

- Effectiveness and Safety of Intravenous Iron Therapy in Outpatient Obstetrical Clinic for Treatment of Iron-Deficiency Anemia During Pregnancy. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that IV iron therapy can be safely given in obstetrical clinics without significant maternal or fetal safety concerns. This obviates the need for more resource-intensive and costly settings such as infusion or hospital-based centers.

- Effects of implementing a standardized protocol for identifying and treating iron-deficiency anemia in pregnancy. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Implementation of a standardized protocol for the diagnosis and management of iron-deficiency anemia during pregnancy was associated with uniformly lower risk of anemia at delivery. Maternal care in the post-protocol time frame was associated with greater utilization of iron infusions for management of iron-deficiency anemia and reduced peripartum red blood cell transfusion.
