- Poor appetite predicts incident muscle weakness and disability: a multi-country longitudinal study of European older adults. [Journal Article]Nutrition. 2026 Apr 23; 149:113256. [Online ahead of print]N
- CONCLUSIONS: Poor appetite is a robust, independent predictor of future muscle weakness, physical disability, and reduced QoL. Routine appetite assessment may help identify at-risk individuals and guide early interventions in ageing populations.

- Can non-pharmacological strategies in cancer patients support perceived appetite? A scoping review. [Review]
- CONCLUSIONS: Structured, actively guided, and repeated non-pharmacological interventions show potential to improve perceived appetite in cancer patients, whereas brief or passive interventions appear less effective. Findings suggest that appetite support operates primarily through indirect psychological, sensory, and behavioral pathways, as captured in a conceptual framework. Further research should develop and evaluate well-defined, mechanism-informed interventions.

- Determinants of malnutrition in older hospitalized patients: a prospective multicenter study with the DoMAP model. [Multicenter Study]
- CONCLUSIONS: The DoMAP model provides a structured framework for capturing the diverse etiologies of malnutrition in older patients. This study emphasizes the multifactorial nature of malnutrition in hospitalized patients, with low intake and poor appetite emerging as predominant drivers.

- Short-Term Clinical Effects After Switching From Zinc Acetate Hydrate to Zinc Histidine Hydrate in Patients With Chronic Liver Disease. [Journal Article]Hepatol Res. 2026 Apr 18. [Online ahead of print]HR
- CONCLUSIONS: Switching from zinc acetate hydrate to zinc histidine hydrate rapidly increased serum zinc levels and improved appetite. Zinc histidine hydrate may represent a practical option for optimizing zinc supplementation in patients with chronic liver disease.

- Nutrition rehabilitation programs and cachexia clinics for anorexia-cachexia syndrome in patients with cancer. [Review]Oncologist. 2026 Feb 05; 31(3).O
- The anorexia-cachexia syndrome (ACS) is characterized by loss of appetite and unintentional weight loss. Important clinical outcomes are associated with ACS including increased risk of chemotherapy side effects, decreased survival, and quality of life. Because ACS is driven by complex metabolic mechanisms and a chronic pro-inflammatory response, the weight loss and muscle wasting cannot be revers…

- Tumor-immune-neural circuit disrupts energy homeostasis in cancer cachexia. [Journal Article]Cancer Cell. 2026 May 11; 44(5):949-964.e6.CC
- Cancer-induced cachexia and anorexia are debilitating complications across many cancers, yet effective treatments remain limited due to a poor understanding of the underlying mechanisms. Here, we identify an uncharacterized tumor-immune-neural circuit driving these syndromes, centered on growth and differentiation factor 15 (GDF15). Using genetically engineered mouse models, we find that loss of …

- [Malnutrition in older adults]. [Review]Assist Inferm Ric. 2025; 44(4):173-180.AI
- . Malnutrition in older adults. Malnutrition in older adults is a multifactorial condition with serious health and social consequences. Physiological changes such as reduced appetite, impaired taste and smell, and slower gastrointestinal signaling contribute to the "anorexia of aging." Physical impairments, including poor oral health, chewing and swallowing difficulties, and mobility limitations,…

- Assessment of appetite using health-care-professional-reported SNAQ. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: We found weak-to-moderate coefficients for the SNAQ used as a hetero-administrated questionnaire. Further investigation across diverse clinical settings and using larger samples are needed to provide further insights to our preliminary observations.

- New models for cancer cachexia and their application to drug discovery. [Review]Expert Opin Drug Discov. 2025 Nov; 20(11):1433-1445.EO
- Cancer cachexia (CC) is a multifactorial syndrome characterized by progressive weight loss, anorexia, and loss of skeletal muscle and fat mass, resulting in reduced quality of life and poor prognosis. Currently, there are no approved pharmacological treatments for CC, highlighting the urgent need for developing novel experimental models.

- Cachexia in mice blunts improved cognitive flexibility induced by calorie restriction. [Journal Article]Brain Behav Immun. 2025 Nov; 130:106123.BB
- Approximately 50-80 % of cancer patients suffer from cachexia, a metabolic syndrome involving inflammation, appetite loss, and muscle and fat wasting. Another common co-morbidity of cancer patients is cognitive impairment, and clinical evidence suggests the incidence of cachexia is linked to more severe cognitive symptoms. Given the difficulty of studying changes in cognitive function in human ca…

- ISG15 mRNA transcript level in circulating leucocytes prognostic of overall survival in hepatocellular carcinoma patients and correlated with quality of life disturbances involved in anorexia-cachexia. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Elevated ISG15 mRNA transcript level in peripheral blood leucocytes was an independent poor prognostic factor for OS in HCC patients. Patients with higher ISG15 gene expression, suggesting more intense type I interferon response, had significantly worse OS. High ISG15 gene expression demonstrated significant correlations with QOL disturbances in fatigue, appetite loss and nutritional concern. These QOL factors could be capturing the anorexia-cachexia manifestations from interferon response induced by HCC.

- Fu's subcutaneous needling for chronic gastritis with observations on serum gastric function indices: A case report. [Case Reports]Medicine (Baltimore). 2025 Jul 18; 104(29):e43438.M
- CONCLUSIONS: FSN has been demonstrated to significantly alleviate epigastric discomfort associated with CG and to have a positive impact on appetite, sleep quality, and bowel movements. Moreover, FSN demonstrates a significant and sustained improvement in serum gastric function indices, with no observed relapse. However, due to the limitations inherent in a single clinical observation case, further randomized controlled clinical trials are warranted.

- Assessment of appetite loss and related factors in older patients with cancer: validation of the cancer appetite and symptom questionnaire (CASQ) in Turkish patients. [Journal Article]Curr Med Res Opin. 2025 May; 41(5):789-797.CM
- CONCLUSIONS: The CASQ is a validated, reliable tool for assessing appetite-related symptoms in Turkish older cancer patients. Findings underscore the need for integrated nutritional and psychological care. Future research should develop targeted interventions to mitigate appetite loss and its impact on quality of life in this population.

- A case report of liver failure caused by Tetrastigma hemsleyanum Diels et Gilg: A rare case report and literature review. [Case Reports]
- CONCLUSIONS: The possibility of liver failure following the use of T hemsleyanum Diels et Gilg should be considered. When patients present with symptoms such as fat intolerance, xanthochromia, poor appetite, nausea, and dark urine after consuming this herb, liver function tests should be promptly conducted to exclude the possibility of drug-induced liver injury. T hemsleyanum Diels et Gilg has the potential to induce liver failure. Liver-protective measures, including nutritional support, proved to be effective in managing the condition.

- The appetite stimulating effect and safety of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) in older patients with poor appetite: A triple-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled, cross-over trial. [Randomized Controlled Trial]
- CONCLUSIONS: In older patients with poor appetite, CBM administered buccally at two time points at the same day, with each dose containing 8.1 mg THC and 7.5 mg CBD, did not improve caloric intake compared to placebo. The observed safety parameters suggest that CBM is generally tolerated when administered according to this dosing regimen. The trial was registered at EudraCT (2021-002318-15) and Clinicaltrials. gov (NCT05503147).
