- Supramolecular Chiral Assembly of Open-Shell Quinoids With Chiral Additives and Their Spin-Dependent Transport in Magneto Field-Effect Transistors. [Journal Article]Small. 2026 May 19; :e14649. [Online ahead of print]S
- Chiral conjugated materials stand at the forefront of organic electronics because of their chiroptical properties and spin-filtering capabilities. Although chiral materials with intrinsic spins show significant promise for organic spintronics, their development remains challenging due to structural and assembly constraints. In this study, a series of quinoid molecules with intrinsic spins (QFn) i…

- Hepatic nodular ultrasound appearance in Wilson's disease: association with ultrasound-derived fat fraction but not fibrosis markers. [Journal Article]Quant Imaging Med Surg. 2026 May 01; 16(5):344.QI
- CONCLUSIONS: The nodular ultrasound appearance in WD is more likely to reflect heterogeneous fatty infiltration secondary to uneven copper deposition rather than progression of hepatic fibrosis, with important implications for clinical evaluation and management.

- Multicentre validation and comparison of 23 noninvasive diagnostic models for liver fibrosis in treatment-naïve Chinese patients with autoimmune hepatitis. [Journal Article]BMC Gastroenterol. 2026 May 16. [Online ahead of print]BG
- CONCLUSIONS: In Chinese treatment-naïve AIH patients, the use of the GP model has moderate diagnostic value for liver fibrosis and cirrhosis. Most existing noninvasive models demonstrate suboptimal accuracy, especially for advanced fibrosis. Further development and validation of noninvasive AIH-specific models are warranted.

- Optimising non-invasive screening for hepatic fibrosis in people living with HIV and intermediate FIB-4 scores. [Journal Article]Front Health Serv. 2026; 6:1807690.FH
- CONCLUSIONS: In people living with HIV with intermediate FIB-4 scores, APRI may provide a simple and effective strategy to further stratify fibrosis risk in routine clinical practice. In this real-world screening population, machine learning models did not outperform established non-invasive scores.

- Serum biomarker analysis may guide management of anemia in patients with chronic liver disease. [Journal Article]Front Med (Lausanne). 2026; 13:1797978.FM
- CONCLUSIONS: Anemia in chronic liver disease should not be overlooked. This exploratory study suggests that anemia-related biomarkers may hold promise for evaluating liver function and could inform the management of anemia in these patients, though future validation in larger cohorts is necessary to confirm these preliminary findings and establish their clinical utility.

- Liver stiffness by non-invasive tests predicts hepatocellular carcinoma and liver-related complications following viral eradication with direct-acting antivirals in chronic hepatitis C: a retrospective cohort study. [Journal Article]BMC Gastroenterol. 2026 May 14. [Online ahead of print]BG
- CONCLUSIONS: Baseline TE independently predicted HCC and LRC in HCV-infected patients with SVR after DAA therapy. In the subgroup analysis, liver fibrosis regression was observed after SVR. Additionally, post-treatment TE might more reliably anticipate adverse outcomes than pre-treatment values.

- Fibrotic NASH Index (FNI) Is Associated with Long-Term Mortality in Individuals with Type 2 Diabetes and MASLD. [Journal Article]Liver Int. 2026 Jun; 46(6):e70676.LI
- CONCLUSIONS: FNI-defined liver fibrosis risk is independently associated with long-term mortality in individuals with T2D. Incorporating non-invasive, age-independent fibrosis assessment may help improve early risk stratification and guide personalised management in dysmetabolic populations.

- Limited Utility of Serum Scores vs. Shear Wave Elastography for Graft Fibrosis in Adult and Pediatric Liver Transplant Recipients. [Journal Article]Ultrasound Med Biol. 2026 May 13. [Online ahead of print]UM
- CONCLUSIONS: SWE provides a superior and more stable assessment of graft fibrosis compared to conventional serological models in both adult and pediatric LT recipients. Given its high NPV, SWE serves as a robust first-line tool for long-term non-invasive graft surveillance.

- The evaluation of Xenin-25 levels in intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy and comparison with healthy pregnant women. [Journal Article]BMC Pregnancy Childbirth. 2026 May 12. [Online ahead of print]BP
- CONCLUSIONS: This initial investigation into Xenin-25 in ICP demonstrates its substantial elevation and exceptional diagnostic efficacy, eclipsing conventional markers. The findings, indicating a link between Xenin-25, hepatic stress and fibrosis scores, support the hypothesis that Xenin-25 can function as a prognostic biomarker. In order to confirm its role in intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) pathophysiology and clinical practice, larger multicentre studies are required.

- This study aimed to investigate the impact of adding lutein-loaded chitosan nanoparticles (LU-CNPs) to a semen extender on the quality, membrane integrity, kinematic parameters, redox status, apoptosis-like changes, ultrastructural integrity, and fertility of cryopreserved ram sperm. Semen samples from seven fertile rams (12-14 months old) were collected using the artificial-vagina technique and …

- Retrospective analysis of predictors for significant hepatic inflammation in metabolic-associated fatty liver disease with chronic hepatitis B. [Journal Article]PeerJ. 2026; 14:e21186.P
- CONCLUSIONS: This clinical study was conducted based on histopathological findings and demonstrated that BMI, LSM, and HBV DNA are independent risk factors for the progression of hepatic inflammation in patients with MAFLD and HBV infection, whereas ALT served as an independent non-invasive predictor of this outcome. These findings provide a novel non-invasive approach for clinicians to assess the degree of hepatic inflammation when liver biopsy results are unavailable.

- Preliminary evidence of improved liver biomarkers in adolescents with obesity and suspected metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease treated with semaglutide: A case series. [Journal Article]JPGN Rep. 2026 May; 7(2):349-354.JR
- Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) affects 30%-40% of youth with obesity and lacks approved pharmacologic therapies. In this single-center retrospective case series at a tertiary care safety-net children's hospital, we evaluated five adolescents (mean age: 17.0 years; 100% Hispanic; 60% male; mean body mass index: 50.8 kg/m²) treated with semaglutide for ≥3 months. - Noninvasive liver fibrosis indices, including the Fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) and AST-to-platelet ratio index (APRI), are widely used in clinical practice. We investigated whether admission FIB-4 and APRI, together with inflammatory markers and comorbidities, chest CT severity, and intensive care unit (ICU) admission, were associated with short- and long-term mortality in hospitalized COVID-19 patients.
