- African Vaccination Week as a catalyst for integrated services and immunisation equity: synthesis of implementation insights from countries in the WHO African Region. [Journal Article]BMJ Public Health. 2026; 4(Suppl 1):e004798.BP
- CONCLUSIONS: The AVW 2025 functioned as a regional implementation platform for highlighting immunisation priorities, reaching missed children and supporting integrated primary healthcare delivery across the WHO African Region.Country experiences indicate that AVW achieves the greatest impact when aligned with national programmes and embedded within routine planning processes. Variations in participation and reporting point to the need for stronger advance preparation, sustained engagement with all Member States and adaptable support tailored to country contexts. Positioning AVW as a feasible, low-opportunity-cost mechanism for advocacy, visibility and service delivery alignment can contribute meaningfully to broader immunisation and primary healthcare goals in the Region.

- Spatial Distribution and Determinants of Inadequate Vitamin A-Rich Food Consumption Among Children Aged 6-23 Months in Somalia: Evidence from the 2020 Somalia Demographic and Health Survey. [Journal Article]Pediatric Health Med Ther. 2026; 17:587150.PH
- CONCLUSIONS: Somali children face a substantial deficiency in Vitamin A-rich food intake, driven by pronounced sociodemographic and geographical disparities. These findings underscore the urgent need for multisectoral interventions. Strategies should prioritize enhancing maternal education and implementing context-specific programs for rural and nomadic communities to mitigate the burden of VAD in Somalia.

- Reproducibility and validity of a food frequency questionnaire among residents in the Pearl River Delta, South China. [Journal Article]Medicine (Baltimore). 2026 May 15; 105(20):e48779.M
- A localized food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was developed to capture habitual dietary intake in the Pearl River Delta population. This study aimed to evaluate the reproducibility and validity of this FFQ. A total of 219 adults were enrolled in the Pearl River Delta region. In the reproducibility analysis, the participants completed the FFQ twice at a 18-month interval. Validity was assessed us…

- Retinoic acid impairs the osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs via the miR-486/FOXO1 axis: a therapeutic target for bone loss. [Journal Article]Biochem Pharmacol. 2026 May 17; :118076. [Online ahead of print]BP
- Retinoic acid (RA), a bioactive vitamin A metabolite, is widely recognized for promoting bone loss and inducing osteoporosis, but its underlying mechanisms remain incompletely understood. This study demonstrated that the expression of miR-486-5p is significantly upregulated in RA-treated human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (hBMSCs). The overexpression of miR-486-5p markedly inhibited osteoge…

- Microfluidization as a strategy to improve the stability of vitamin A in emulsion-based delivery systems. [Journal Article]Food Sci Biotechnol. 2026 Jun; 35(7):1831-1842.FS
- This work aims to evaluate the physical stability of oil-in-water emulsions containing encapsulated vitamin A, developed using high-pressure microfluidization technology. A full factorial design was employed to formulate emulsions containing 1.5% (w/w) vitamin A and wall materials comprising malto dextrin and whey protein isolate in a 1:2 ratio. Microfluidization pressure (50, 100, and 150 MPa) a…

- Comparative efficacy of nutritional supplements for the prevention of respiratory tract infections in children: a systematic review and network meta-analysis. [Journal Article]BMC Infect Dis. 2026 May 16. [Online ahead of print]BI
- CONCLUSIONS: This study indicates that among the various nutritional interventions included, HVD demonstrated the greatest potential effect in preventing respiratory infections in children. Direct comparison meta-analyses revealed no statistically significant differences between LVD, VA, VA_Zinc, zinc, and placebo. A network meta-analysis further supported these findings, with league table and SUCRA rankings indicating HVD may offer the optimal efficacy among all interventions.

- Ocular manifestations of vitamin A deficiency in gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary disease. [Journal Article]Front Ophthalmol (Lausanne). 2026; 6:1779060.FO
- CONCLUSIONS: Vitamin A deficiency occurs across a wide spectrum of GI and hepatobiliary diseases and is associated with diverse anterior and posterior segment ocular findings, ranging from subtle surface disease to severe, vision-threatening pathology. Visual symptoms and ocular findings improved following vitamin A repletion, highlighting the preventable and reversible nature of this condition when identified early. Given the risk of irreversible ocular sequelae with delayed diagnosis, serum vitamin A assessment with timely repletion should be considered in patients with at-risk gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary conditions. Early identification through multidisciplinary care may prevent avoidable, vision-threatening ocular complications.

- Acne in Cystic Fibrosis: Tips for Prescribing Isotretinoin in the Genomodulatory Era. [Journal Article]Case Rep Dermatol Med. 2026; 2026:5545924.CR
- A 16-year-old boy with cystic fibrosis (CF) on fat-soluble vitamin (including vitamin A) supplementation develops severe acne. He is commenced on isotretinoin, a vitamin A derivative. The package insert says that vitamin A supplementation should be stopped, presenting a therapeutic dilemma. We review the literature and previous reports of isotretinoin use in patients with CF to provide guidance o…

- Energy and nutrient intake across Nova food groups by quintiles of ultra-processed food energy contribution among Brazilian children aged 6-59 months. [Journal Article]Br J Nutr. 2026 May 14; :1-26. [Online ahead of print]BJ
- The objective is to describe energy, macro-, and micronutrient intake according to Nova food groups and to estimate its association with ultra-processed foods (UPF) energy participation in the diets of children, stratified by age (6-23m/24-59m). A single 24-hour recall from 12,553 children in the Brazilian National Survey on Child Nutrition was used to estimate the relative energy contribution of…

- All-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) is essential in treating acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL), but has been linked to adverse events such as differentiation syndrome and intracranial hypertension. Hearing impairment associated with intracranial hypertension is rare but clinically relevant. We report the case of a 6-year-old girl with APL who developed transient low-frequency sensorineural hearing im…

- Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a prevalent chronic lung disease in preterm infants, characterized by impaired alveolarization and abnormal vascular development. Growing evidence indicates that endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) and the unfolded protein response (UPR) are closely involved in the pathogenesis of BPD. Under hyperoxic conditions, excessive reactive oxygen species promote protein…
