- Late Infective Endocarditis Involving a Gore HELEX® Atrial Septal Occluder Presenting as a Multiple Sclerosis Pseudo-Flare: A Case Report. [Case Reports]Cureus. 2026 Jul; 18(7):e112965.C
- Atrial septal defects (ASDs) are common congenital heart defects that can be corrected with the placement of minimally invasive occlusion devices. There is a very small risk of perioperative infection associated with these devices following placement. Late endocarditis involving occlusion devices is an exceedingly rare complication of percutaneous occlusion devices. Here we present the case of a …

- [Neuroimaging features of white matter lesions related to patent foramen ovale]. [Journal Article]Zhonghua Yi Xue Za Zhi. 2026 Aug 25; 106(31):3285-3290.ZY
- A retrospective analysis was conducted on the neuroimaging features of white matter lesions related to patent foramen ovale and clinical characteristics (age, sex, history of hypertension and diabetes, etc.) of patients who underwent patent foramen ovale closure surgery at Fuwai Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, from February 2021 to June 2025. All patients were confirmed to have rig…

- A second-hit conceptual framework for pulmonary arterial hypertension in adult congenital heart disease: genetics, hemodynamics, and treat-and-repair. [Review]
- Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) complicates a clinically important subset of adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) and contributes to substantial morbidity and premature mortality. This narrative review synthesizes direct and indirect evidence within a second-hit conceptual framework for ACHD-associated PAH. In this framework, baseline pulmonary vascular susceptibility interacts over time w…

- Clinical and Pathophysiological Interplay Between Patent Ductus Arteriosus and Patent Foramen Ovale: A Comparative Narrative Review. [Review]
- CONCLUSIONS: Although no clearly documented veterinary case of concurrent PDA and PFO has been identified, comparative evidence suggests that secondary pulmonary hypertension may play an important role in this interaction. Improved understanding of this relationship may enhance diagnostic accuracy and management strategies in neonatal animals.

- [Clinical phenotype and genetic analysis of 7 neonates with CHARGE syndrome caused by CHD7 gene variants]. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: CS presents with complex and diverse clinical features. Neonates exhibiting multisystem abnormalities such as feeding difficulties, respiratory distress, and external ear deformities warrant suspicion of CS. Early genetic testing facilitates identification of causative variants and provides essential information for genetic counseling. The novel CHD7 variants identified in this study expand the mutation spectrum of CS in China.

- Clinical and Hemodynamic Profile of Patients Undergoing Early Closure of Atrial Septal Defect: A Systematic Review and Pooled Analysis. [Review]
- Atrial septal defect (ASD) is considered a benign condition and is usually closed electively in pre-school age. Early symptomatic presentation is uncommon and often associated with comorbidities such as chronic lung disease and recurrent respiratory infections. Although pulmonary hypertension is rare in ASD, infants with large defects may develop respiratory symptoms and failure to thrive even in…

- [Atrioventricular block after percutaneous closure of an ostium secundum-type atrial septal defect with Nit-Occlud devices]. [Journal Article]Medicina (B Aires). 2026; 86(4):876-884.M
- CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of AVB after percutaneous treatment of OS-ASD with Nit-Occlud devices is rare. Devices with larger waist diameters were associated with a higher risk of AVB.
- Total anomalous pulmonary venous drainage: Overall results, comparison of the sutureless versus the conventional approach, and predictors of adverse events - A 17-year single-center experience. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Early postoperative outcomes were found to be closely associated with the patients' preoperative clinical status. Overall, in our cohort, no difference was seen between the conventional and sutureless technique of TAPVD repair. These findings may be influenced by the study's limited sample size, potentially reducing its statistical power.

- Paradoxical coronary embolism through an atrial septal defect presenting as acute myocardial infarction: A case report. [Case Reports]
- Paradoxical embolism through an atrial septal defect (ASD) is a rare but important cause of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) in patients without conventional cardiovascular risk factors. We report the case of a 40-year-old male with no history of hypertension, diabetes, smoking, dyslipidemia, or family history of premature coronary artery disease who presented with acute chest pain and ischemic elec…

- Simultaneous transcatheter management of incidental critical left main coronary artery disease in a young woman undergoing atrial septal defect device closure. [Case Reports]
- Transcatheter device closure is the preferred treatment for secundum atrial septal defect (ASD) in young adults with suitable anatomy. In this population, routine coronary angiography is generally not recommended in the absence of ischemic symptoms or conventional cardiovascular risk factors. However, coronary imaging is selectively performed during ASD intervention to delineate anomalous coronar…

- Grey and white matter alteration in patients with patent foramen ovale: A cross-sectional observational study using combined surface-based morphometry and voxel-based morphometry. [Journal Article]
- Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is closely associated with migraine. However, the mechanism remains unclear. Surface-based morphometry (SBM) and voxel-based morphometry (VBM) were widely used to study microstructural changes in the brain. We aimed to use SBM and VBM to investigate microstructural changes in the brain in migraineurs with PFO. A total of 20 migraineurs were enrolled in the PFO group, an…

- Interplay of patent foramen ovale and atrial septum aneurysm in a nonagenarian patient presenting with platypnoea-orthodeoxia syndrome. [Case Reports]BMJ Case Rep. 2026 Aug 14; 19(8).BC
- Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is a common congenital cardiac anomaly, generally responsible for cryptogenic stroke. Still, it can cause severe positional hypoxia via a right-to-left shunt if associated with anatomic distortion of the interatrial septum. A man in his 90s with a known atrial septal defect (pulmonary blood flow/systemic blood flow (Qp/Qs) ratio of 0.85) and ascending aortic aneurysm pr…

- Contemporary Imaging Modalities for Transcatheter Interatrial Communication Closure: A Comparative Meta-Analysis of Intracardiac and Transesophageal Echocardiography. [Review]
- CONCLUSIONS: ICE represents a promising alternative imaging modality for guiding transcatheter closure of ASD and PFO. Compared with TEE, ICE is associated with a numerically reduced procedural duration and a lower incidence of major complications, while maintaining comparable procedural success and long-term closure rates.

- Asymptomatic Pulmonary Edema in Children With Secundum Atrial Septal Defect: A Bedside Lung Ultrasound Screening Study. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: In this small cohort of asymptomatic children with isolated ASD II, sonographic signs of increased extravascular lung water were uncommon and did not correlate with defect size, shunt magnitude, or natriuretic peptide level. Bedside lung ultrasound was feasible. These findings require confirmation in larger, controlled studies.
