  • Calciphylaxis, beware the ophthalmic mimic: A case series. [Case Reports]
    Clin Nephrol Case Stud. 2023; 11:136-146.Guymer C, Jahan S, … Simon SCN
  • CONCLUSIONS: These cases highlight the need for judicious clinical suspicion of calciphylaxis in patients with kidney failure, presenting with microvascular ischemic ophthalmic pathology such as AION or CRAO. Confirmation with temporal artery biopsy is essential to direct targeted individualized multi-disciplinary treatment of calciphylaxis and avoid unnecessary steroid exposure in cases masquerading as giant cell arteritis (GCA).
  • Role of protease-activated receptor 4 in mouse models of acute and chronic kidney injury. [Journal Article]
    Am J Physiol Renal Physiol. 2024 Feb 01; 326(2):F219-F226.Erreger K, Cao S, … Hamm HEAJ
  • Protease-activated receptor 4 (PAR4) is a G protein-coupled receptor activated by thrombin. In the platelet, response to thrombin PAR4 contributes to the predominant procoagulant microparticle formation, increased fibrin deposition, and initiation of platelet-stimulated inflammation. In addition, PAR4 is expressed in other cell types, including endothelial cells. Under inflammatory conditions, PA…

  • Acute kidney injury (AKI), previously called acute renal failure (ARF), denotes a sudden and often reversible reduction in kidney function, as measured by glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Although, immediately after a renal insult, blood urea nitrogen (BUN) or creatinine levels may be within the normal range. The only sign of acute kidney injury may be a decline in urine output. AKI can lead to …
  • A novel animal model to study delayed resuscitation following traumatic hemorrhage. [Journal Article]
    J Appl Physiol (1985). 2022 Oct 01; 133(4):814-821.Xiang L, Calderon AS, … Ryan KLJA
  • A focus of combat casualty care research is to develop treatments for when full resuscitation after hemorrhage is delayed. However, few animal models exist to investigate such treatments. Given the kidney's susceptibility to ischemia, we determined how delayed resuscitation affects renal function in a model of traumatic shock. Rats were randomized into three groups: resuscitation after 1 h (ETH-1…
  • Head-to-head comparison of two SGLT-2 inhibitors on AKI outcomes in a rat ischemia-reperfusion model. [Journal Article]
    Biomed Pharmacother. 2022 Sep; 153:113357.Chu C, Delić D, … Hocher BBP
  • The CREDENCE trial testing canagliflozin and the EMPA-REG OUTCOME trial testing empagliflozin suggest different effects on acute kidney injury (AKI). AKI diagnosis was mainly made based on changes of serum creatinine (sCr) although this also reflect mode of action of SGLT-2 inhibitors. We analyzed both compounds in a rat AKI model. The renal ischemia-reperfusion injury (I/R) model was used. Four …

  • A 73-year-old male presented with one day of hematuria associated with urinary frequency and acute on chronic abdominal cramping. On exam, he had diffuse abdominal tenderness, which he stated was normal for him. He was afebrile with no costovertebral angle tenderness or any other pertinent findings on physical exam. The urinalysis showed large red blood cells and small leukocyte esterase and nitr…
